PRESS SELECTIONS 7.20.2016 Town Topics (Princeton, NJ), Review: “Browne’s music captured the vast and cold environment of Antarctica, with the piece building in intensity as one would stand on the glacier and take in more and more of the expansive view. Browne’s orchestral color was shaded with raindrops of percussion, a punctuating harp, and lean strings, as well as sweet melodies from violist Frank Foerster, cellist Ted Ackerman, and concertmaster Eric Wyrick. In the full symphonic sound of the NJSO, one could sense the wonder of the unexplored Antarctic terrain.” http://www.towntopics.com/wordpress/2016/07/20/new-jersey-symphony-orchestra-presents- works-by-the-next-generation-of-composers/ 1.20.2016 Star Tribune (Minneapolis, MN), Review: “Mathew Browne’s terrific Barnstorming Season suggests that music can be lighthearted and serious at the same time. Browne evokes the airshows of the 1920s, ‘flying circuses,’ wherein The 12th Street Rag keeps collapsing into raucous chaos.” http://www.startribune.com/future-classics-priceless-for-young-composers/367104161/ 5.9.2015 Boston Classical Review (Boston, MA), Review: “Browne unabashedly embraced Hollywood’s lush orchestral idiom as he evoked the order and chaos of space, the planets secure in their orbits until the occasional violent collision disrupts everything and creates something entirely new, such as Earth’s moon or Saturn’s rings. Familiar cinematic grooves—the pounding drums, the big string tune, the action scene driven by staccato brass, the klezmer-style clarinet—orbited and collided in Browne’s eventful piece.” http://bostonclassicalreview.com/2015/05/new-england-philharmonic-closes-season-in-eclectic- fashion-with-a-vores-premiere/ 9.24.2014 What’s on London (London, UK), Review: “The outstanding work of the evening was Matthew Browne’s String Quartet No.1 ‘A Penumbral Eclipse’. Beautifully crafted and considered, atmospheric gradients set off magnificently by searing phraseology. The composer took inspiration from his experience of a lunar eclipse, as suggestive of the eclipse of “the vast majority of our experiences…” An exquisite lightness of touch only enhanced in performance: a natural elegance impossible to contrive, slipping and sliding between the most ebullient of harmonisations. Colours at the last shone brightly, polished-off with hearteningly jazzy Swing.” http://www.whats-on- london.co.uk/review/villiers-quartet-new-works-competition/ 6.14.2014 Journal of the American Viola Society (Los Angeles, CA), Review: “Clocking in at just four minutes, Exit is a swift, breathless, virtuosic showstopper that would be an ideal closer for any recital. Not an easy piece by any means, Ng handled the challenges effortlessly in this riveting performance.” http://studio.americanviolasociety.org/journal/files/2014/08/JAVS-Summer-2014.pdf

PRESS SELECTIONS (con’t.) 11.10.2013 Journal Sentinel (Milwaukee, WI), Review: “The evening ended with Matthew Browne's "How the Solar System Was Won," a musical homage to the film work of Stanley Kubrick. Making good use of Kubrick's penchant for juxtaposition, Browne created a compelling piece that moved suddenly from ethereal passages to driving rhythms and from delicate whispered lines to big, bold full- orchestra sounds.” http://archive.jsonline.com/entertainment/arts/milwaukee-symphony-plays-program-of-new- works-by-young-composers-b99137641z1-231353991.html
