Sunderban National Park, Gosaba,

West Bengal, 743370, The best time to visit is from September to March. It is part of the world’s largest delta of 80,000 km formed from sediments deposited by the three great rivers, Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna, that fall into the Bengal Basin.

The Sunderbans National Park is the largest estuarine mangrove forest in the world. It is a National Park, Tiger Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve. Situated in the Sunderbans Ganga river delta bordering the Bay of Bengal in , the ecosystem stretches across 10,000 km of land and water. About 5,980 km is in India and the rest in Bangladesh.

The Indian section of the Sunderbans, spanning the Hooghly in the west and the Teulia river in the east, became a protected area as early as 1878. It became the core area of the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve in 1973, a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1977 and a National Park in 1984. The mangrove forests provide cover to the Bengal tiger that can easily become man-eaters. Home to many birds, reptiles and invertebrate species, including the salt-water crocodile, the Gangetic dolphin swim merrily in the Raimgangal river. The Sajnakhali Sanctuary is a part of the Sunderbans National Park.
