Think carefully about how you will resist the commercial world’s attempts to draw you away from God and into shopping and materialism. If the house is not decorated, the presents are not bought, the cookies are not baked, and the Christmas parties at work are not attended, God is still God and Jesus is born. Hallelujah! I hope that our Christmas season will be filled with the joy that comes from relationships- with God in Jesus Christ, and with each other. For that is what Christmas is really about.

Finance Committee By: Richard Satter

The General Fund has an annual budget of $576,735. Through the month of October, total revenue received is $493,324. This is compared to $467,548 received through October 2012. Through October, we are 5/6 through the church year. We have received 85.54% of our need. A few special line items on the budget through October are envelope pledges received of $295,553 or 79.95% of budget, and envelope Gifts- Unpledged of $89,802 or 161.12% of budget. We have not needed to take any of the $22,000 special draw from the General Endowment Fund that was approved by Church Council in the May meeting. The congregation is reminded that we have two special offerings in November and December. The Thanksgiving offering is budgeted for $1,200 and the Christmas offering is budgeted for $8,500. As you read this edition of the Crier, we will have already had Celebration Sunday of our fall Stewardship Campaign. We would like to remind you that it is still not too late to turn in a pledge card and have your pledge be part of our calculation of the 2014 church budget. We thank you for your tithes, gifts, and support. On the expense side, total expenses through October were $473,902. As an unexpected blessing to Wesley, our income has exceeded our expenses by $19,421 which is only due in part by a one-time check received as a Gift-Unpledged.

United Methodist Men By: Ralph Deats, President

The Wesley United Methodist Men, in conjunction with the Wesley College Student Nursing Association, would like to thank all of the church who helped and attended to make the Annual Spaghetti Dinner a success. This includes all of the volunteers who helped in the dining room and kitchen, dishwashers, plus the Boy Scouts. We served a total of 273 meals. Wesley College SNA members purchased 42 tickets for the Dover Inter -Faith Housing Mission as a community outreach project. We met on November 11th to cut greenery and on November 18th to assemble the Advent Wreath to be hung on the front of the church above the entrance doors, prior to the end of November. Thank you to Bobby Tudor and Tudor Electric who are instrumental in making sure that the wreath is in place prior to the first Sunday of Advent. Thank you for your support.

MISSIONS IN MOTION

Angel Tree: On November 17, 2013 Angel Tree tags were graciously picked up by members of Wesley UMC. The “Angels” we receive are children that have an incarcerated parent. The parent writes a list of items that they would like to give their child. Each person who takes an Angel shops for that child and the gifts are given on behalf of the parent. It is a wonder- ful ministry. We are very blessed to have Melody Heavner (coordinates the gift tag distribu- tion and wrapping party) and Jack Willis (who delivers the gifts to the families) lead this min- istry. The wrapping party is on December 1, 2013 after the 9:45am service in fellowship hall. If you wish to help wrap, please see Melody. There will be sandwiches provided for our volunteer wrappers.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing: This year Wesley UMC will be ringing the bell at Redners in Camden, Delaware. We are looking for volunteers to ring. If you are interested in signing up for a time slot for ringing the bell (no musical talent required), please contact Candy Casto at 302-359-2030. We have the following dates and times:

 December 12th - Thursday from 10:00am - 7:00pm  December 13th - Friday from 10:00am - 9:00pm  December 14th - Saturday from 10:00am - 9:00pm

Food Pantry: This is just a friendly reminder that on the last Sunday of every month, there are empty re-usable bags available for you to pick up and fill in order to re- turn the first Sunday. The bags have thinned out over the year. If you have a bag and do not plan on using it soon, please return to the church. In 2013 from January through October we have collected approximately 2,400 pounds of food. The mission committee would like to set a challenge to STUFF THE PANTRY by collecting 800 pounds in November and December combined. Are you up to the challenge? Some popular items this time of year are: canned yams, boxed stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, , canned corn, canned green beans, , pumpkin filling, sweet potato pie filling, filling, and evaporated milk. These items are all donated to the local food pantry located at the First Baptist Church.

Dover Interfaith Mission for Housing: Wesley UMC will be serving meals December 3rd – 8th. If you are interested in providing items or serving, please contact Gerrie Willis at 734-5141. This will be the fourth week that Wesley UMC has hosted dinner. We hosted in February, May and September.

As you know the winter months are coming. The shelter is typically filled to capacity. Winter also means more layers and more clothing. The shelter will utilize more laundry detergent then the summer months. With this said, the shelter would greatly appreciate donations of laundry detergent. The detergent must be HE (high efficiency). If you would like to donate laundry detergent to the shelter, please place in the box on the stage in fellowship hall marked DIMH – Laundry Detergent.

AM I TOO LATE? By: Chris Countryman, Director, Christian Education

When I used to work construction, sometimes there would be mistakes made on the job, hard to believe by us trusty construction workers I know, but that is the reality. Sometimes the mistake would not be noticed until it seemed too late to fix it. Some of the guys thought, well, we already have the drywall up, taped and spackled. We are not going to open it back up to put in an extra outlet for more lighting in the family room, c’mon! Far too often this is our response our approach when we notice that we have made a mistake which seems too late to fix. We just think, “Well I can’t change it now. What’s the use? What’s done is done.” The most tragic area where we have this “TOO LATE” approach is in our relationships, and since I’m the youth director, let me state, in our parenting. Many parents feel, well, it’s too late now. My kid is 14 or 16 and driving or 18 and in college or 22, graduated and has their own apartment. It’s too late for me to try and build a relationship with them now. What’s done is done. My answer: “It’s never too late!” You’re never too late to build a relationship with your kid…even your 22 - year - old “kid.” Now obviously, we should parent a 14 year old much dif- ferently than a 22 year old, but there is one universal, foundational truth that is consistent regardless of their age; it’s about a relationship first! So now that you know it’s not too late, your next question is, okay, so now what? Here is your task: enter their world. Dialogue with them. I know for some of you, you know that’s the last thing they want, but it’s the very thing they need possibly the most. We have a bibli- cal obligation to love, lead, discipline, encourage, and equip our kids, if we are not doing it, then someone or something else is. Take them out for ice-cream or do something they enjoy. If they like to run, run with them. This will show them that you are not just an adult that is there to tell them what to do, but someone that cares about what they do and who they are. Try to discover something about them that you never knew before. But let it come natural; don’t start asking them questions like a parole officer. Maybe it’s finding out what your kid’s favorite musical artist or TV show is. Now most likely they won’t play it around you or want to watch that with you because some lyrics from the song or scenes from the show will be inap- propriate and vulgar. Don’t just yell at them and tell them not to listen to it. That’s what they expect. Instead, try to find out why they like it. Listen to it for yourself, watch it for yourself. This does not mean that we condone or approve of something that we know is bad, but when it comes to building relationships, we must have a vision that is deeper than what the eye can see in the moment or what the ear can hear. We listen and watch because we show that we care about them. If watching a TV show or listening to music we ordinarily wouldn’t listen to can bridge a gap and have our kids smile at us or talk to us, then use what is bad for some- thing good. It is biblical I promise you. Too often we have become drill sergeants barking or- ders caring more about actions and results instead of a parent that cares about matters of the heart. God is calling us to be the parents that desire a real, authentic relationship with their kid. It is not too late. It is never too late, to show your kid you love them, but it must be about this one thing, relationship first. I turned and continue to turn from my sinful behaviors because I love my Father in Heaven and I want nothing more in life, than to please him. Build a relationship first, enter their world, spend time with them, listen to them, God will richly bless it and slowly and slow- ly we by the power of his spirit will be transformed into the image of his perfect Son, Jesus the Christ. Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. SPRC UPDATE By: Larry Josefowski, Chairperson

Pastor Amy and The Staff Parish Relations Committee have prayerfully considered the staffing needs of the church, both now, and where we hope and expect to be in a few years. The past years have been a period of retrench ment, as we have gone from several full-time pastors, then one full-time pastor and two part-timers, to recently only having one full time and one part-time clergy, in addition to lay staff. We believe it is time to begin the path towards reversing that trend, even if it is go- ing to be a slow process. Many things are calling us to increase the number of hours and to slightly change the duties of our part time minister position. Pastor Harry has done a great job, and certainly per- formed more hours and more duties than his contract called for…and we are grateful for his help in helping lead the church to grow. In conversations with Harry and Leroy Jones, we have come to the conclusion that we want to gradually grow the number of hours and broaden the scope of the position. We believe that the increased number of people attending Wesley Church calls us to increase our staffing, and that donations are increasing to the point that we can effect these changes. While the position of Minister of Pastoral Care has traditionally focused on the visitations and spiritual needs of those in hospitals and those who are sick, we believe that a person who is focused on the needs of members at all their stages of life – from when they show an inter- est, when they join, or if they being to stop coming to worship. To do this and to provide the continuing care to those who are ill, we see some changes in the duties – changes you may notice immediately. We are increasing the number of hours for this position slightly, from 24 to 28. Additionally, this person will not be present for every Sunday morning worship service, although he or she may be ministering in other ar- eas of the church at that time. There will be other changes; all ones that we hope position our church for this exciting time of growth. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Amy or any member of the Staff Parish Relations Committee.

Family Life By: Jim Thistlewood

Our first Trunk or Treat was a real suc- cess. We had 12 cars and approximately 35-40 kids. The youth group provided lots of games and fun events for the evening. Everyone enjoyed a bag dinner and lots of treats. We are looking forward to a bigger and even better event next year.

Family Life is sponsoring a movie/cookie decorating night on Friday, December 6th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to which parents can drop their kids off for a break. We will provide babysitting for younger than school age, as well as pizza for the kids for dinner. It is Downtown Dover’s First Friday Event. Watch for details in bulletin the and on the church website. This should be a fun event for the kids and give parents a chance to do some shopping or just a well-deserved time for a dinner without the kids.

Come Join us on Sunday, December 8th, at 5:00 p.m., for the Ham and Covered dish Advent Dinner. The Dover High School Jazz Band will be playing during dinner followed by a short children’s drama. We are asking families to bring hats, scarves, gloves and mittens for the Warming Tree. Sign up sheets are in the bulletin. Fill one out or call the church office at 678-9626 to get your reservation in.

Mark your calendar to bring the kids to Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 14th, in Grace Fellowship Hall. Sign-up sheets are in the bulletin. Fill one out or call the church office at 678-9626 to get your reservation in.

The Wesley Crier December 2013 Page 11

During the month of October, we experienced our series entitled “first: putting GOD first in living and giving.” In worship, in small group study, and in personal devotion, we were invit- ed to reflect on these truths:  We are made in God’s image and are meant to be creators of life and hope, not the consumers of our culture’s shiny gods  We have the ability to change the world and create a legacy that will live for- ever in the lives of generations to follow. The legacy starts when each of us takes the hard steps of financial discipline and fulfilling the call to generosity that God has placed in all of us.

The goal continues beyond October and November, for it is a goal that is a part of the jour- ney of faith: for all of us to ask questions of ourselves and be open to the possibility that God will lead us in new directions in our lives.

Thus far, 178 families have made financial commitments. Several have also completed the volunteer survey, indicating how you will serve in the coming year.

Thank you. Thank you for responding to this challenge to give with your heart, and not out of obligation. Thank you for giving the way God gives- freely, fully, and with no favorites or expectations of repayment.

Of the 178 who have pledged thus far, forty-five increased their giving. Ten percent have de- creased their giving. Ten families, representing six percent, are new pledges. We are trusting that the 42 families who pledged last year, and have not yet returned their commitment cards, will do so soon.

The General Operating Fund pledge totals are currently $333,950.00. Our Building Fund pledges are $48,211.00.

Thank you for sharing your estimate of giving with our church this year. You are an im- portant part of the ministry of Wesley Church and of God’s work in our community and the world. Through your gifts, you will be changing the lives of children and youth, ministering to those in need in our community and beyond, and welcoming others into the embrace of Christ.
