Round 15 BIG LEAGUE 2018 15 Top dog In a tumultuous season, passion for the jersey and powerhouse performances are making David Klemmer a shining light for the Bulldogs in 2018.

He has After winning the State of Origin opener in Bworked his way through the junior ranks Melbourne, Klemmer produced a performance with the club, has represented New South Wales on Monday that left little doubt as to why he is 10 times and has played 15 Tests for Australia. a starting prop for the Blues. It’s hard when you look Earlier this season Klemmer’s name was mentioned as a potential player the Bulldogs could offload to ease salary cap pressure, but he quashed that suggestion. Klemmer is signed with the club until 2020 and has no plans on leaving, ever. “I hope to be a Bulldog for life. I’d love to be able to retire here, that would be ideal. I want to win a comp too, that’s a goal in my career and I want to do that with the Dogs. They’re my team and always have been, so it would be a dream come true,” Klemmer tells Big League. The 24-year old joined the club as a fresh- faced teenager in the Harold Matthews competition, an exciting moment for a kid who grew up supporting the club. He then played for the Australian Schoolboys, the New South Wales under-18s and 20s teams and was named the NYC Player of The Year in 2012. He made his first grade debut in 2013 and played a hand in the Bulldogs’ 2014 success. Fast forward five years and the All Saints Toongabbie Tigers junior is going from strength to strength, ticking off nearly every achievement for an NRL player, except a premiership. “Coming from Harold Matts all the way through to first grade with the club has been awesome. Harold Matthews was the last year I won a comp, so I need to win it with first grade. I’ve always dreamed of it and it’s something Robb Cox/NRLPhotos.com I’m working hard for. His passion and consistency have been a godsend for the Bulldogs. You look around the pitch and there are guys who haven’t played more than 15 first grade games. I’m just trying to help them out because I’ve been in their shoes,” he says. “Sometimes it can be a confidence thing with younger players. I like to tell them that they are great footballers and they wouldn’t be where they are if they weren’t, so to just keep their heads down and work hard.” FAMILY MAN Off the field, Klemmer is a family man. He has his hands busy with three sons under the age of five – Cooper, Jackson and David – who are all currently rocking the same hairdo as him. The eldest, Cooper, has begun following in his dad’s footsteps, taking up rugby league. It’s unclear if he’s a future Origin star just yet, but Klemmer loves heading to the games and will often be the proudest parent on the sideline. “It’s his first year of footy this year. He’s playing for the Narellan Jets. His first couple of games were a bit interesting, but he’s improved a lot,” he says. “Sometimes the other parents look at me. I’m always yelling out support and laughing my head off because it’s hilarious watching the under-6s play, they run backwards and have the best time.” The youngest son could also be destined to be an NRL star; his godfather is Klemmer’s former team-mate and Bulldogs’ favourite son Josh Reynolds. His departure was hard for fans to swallow, but has ultimately opened up a spot for a new fan favourite. Klemmer can fill that void, but believes he’ll never replace his mate. “I’ll always love the club, it’s an absolute dream walking into Belmore every day. But I could never do what ‘Grubby’ did for the Dogs,” he says. “He was a great clubman and he’s someone I still look up to. I’ll keep enjoying what I’m doing though, I love playing footy and I love playing for this club, so hopefully they don’t get rid of me.”
