IDPA DP4400 CLOUD CAPABILITIES

Question: What are benefits of the IDPA DP4400’s Cloud enablement capabilities? IDPA DP4400 supports: • Cloud Tier for long-term retention to the Cloud (Public, Private or Hybrid Clouds) • Cloud Disaster Recovery (to Amazon Web Services) – NEW native capability introduced with IDPA DP4400

Question: What are the Cloud Tier capabilities of the IDPA DP4400? The IDPA DP4400 enables mid-sized organizations to more easily and cost effectively take advantage of the Dell EMC data protection’s cloud tier capabilities to extend data protection to the cloud for long-term retention. Cloud Tier is an add-on capability (purchased on a per TB basis) that is natively integrated to the IDPA DP4400. Using Cloud Tier, the IDPA DP4400 can send and manage two times its maximum usable capacity (i.e. 192 TB) to a public, private or hybrid cloud for long-term retention (customers still have to pay a cloud vendor for storage costs). The data is deduplicated before sending to the cloud for most cost efficient storage and bandwidth utilization. And, there is no need to purchase or install a separate cloud gateway or virtual appliance, which means that customers do not have to worry about any additional physical footprint or management overhead.

3 | IDPA DP4400 FAQ © 2018 Dell Inc. or its subsidiaries.

A single IDPA DP4400 can manage up to 14.4 PB of logical capacity (based on 96 TB usable capacity and 50:1 deduplication ratio) with long-term retention to the Cloud (Please note that even if a customer has not purchased the full 96 TB in a DP4400, they can still manage the full 2X usable capacity of the appliance, 192 TB, in the Cloud via Cloud Tier). The highlights of Cloud Tier for the IDPA DP4400 are: • Native cloud-tiering: Add on capability for automated tiering directly from the IDPA DP4400 to a public, private or hybrid cloud for long-term retention • Large capacity: Manage up to 14.4 PB of logical capacity (based on 96 TB usable capacity and 50:1 deduplication ratio) with long-term retention to the Cloud • Lower TCO: Data sent to the cloud is already deduplicated to reduce cloud storage footprint and network bandwidth usage • API extensible • Data security: Data is encrypted before tiering to the cloud • Flexible cloud protection: Supports a variety of public and private clouds including Storage Cloud and Dell EMC Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS)

DEDUPLICATION

Question: Does the IDPA DP4400 deliver efficient deduplication? The IDPA DP4400 comes with the same industry leading deduplication technology utilized by Dell EMC Data Domain. It uses variable-length segmentation to break up data streams for optimal deduplication rates. Specifically, as an IDPA DP4400 system ingests data, it intelligently breaks up the stream based on the natural structure of the data. Then, the system will determine if each segment is unique before compressing and storing it. By doing this, the system usually finds the same logical segment break points that it found previously, which results in identifying more duplicate segments enabling higher deduplication ratios. In comparison, vendors who use fixed length deduplication are less likely to find duplicate segments as their segmentation is based on a predetermined size. Some vendors will even try to trick you and call it “variable” when, for them, it really means you can select which “fixed” length value you want to use. The IDPA DP4400 employs variable-length, inline deduplication to minimize disk requirements and ensure data lands on disk already deduplicated. This reduces backup and archive storage requirements by an average rate of 55:1. In fact, IDPA comes with an up to 55:1 Data Protection Deduplication Guarantee as part of the Dell EMC Future-Proof Loyalty Program. With Dell EMC’s industry-leading deduplication, months of retention on disk is possible using the same number of “floor tiles” that had traditionally provided only a couple of days of disk staging.
