MCDONALD, Western EcoSystems Technology, Laramie, WY, USA ABSTRACT Federally listed as threatened in 1990 primarily because of habitat loss, the northern spotted owl (Strix occidentalis caurina) has continued to decline despite conservation efforts resulting in forested habitat being reserved throughout its range. Recently, there is growing evidence the congeneric invasive barred owl (Strix varia) may be responsible for the continued decline primarily by excluding spotted owls from their preferred habitat. We used a long-term demographic study for spotted owls in coastal northern California as the basis for a pilot barred owl removal experiment. Our demography study used capture–recapture, reproductive output, and territory occupancy data collected from 1990 to 2013 to evaluate trends in vital rates and populations. We used a classic before-after-control-impact (BACI) experimental design to investigate the demographic response of northern spotted owls to the lethal removal of barred owls. According to the best 2-species dynamic occupancy model, there was no evidence of differences in barred or northern spotted owl occupancy prior to the initiation of the treatment (barred owl removal). After treatment, barred owl occupancy was lower in the treated relative to the untreated areas and spotted owl occupancy was higher relative to the untreated areas. Barred owl removal decreased spotted owl territory extinction rates but did not affect territory colonization rates. As a result, spotted owl occupancy increased in the treated area and continued to decline in the untreated areas. Prior to and after barred owl removal, there was no evidence that average fecundity differed on the 2 study areas. However, the greater number of occupied spotted owl sites on the treated areas resulted in greater productivity in the treated areas based on empirical counts of fledged young. Prior to removal, survival was declining at a rate of approximately 0.2% per year for treated and untreated areas. Following treatment, estimated survival was 0.859 for the treated areas and 0.822 for the untreated areas. Derived estimates of population change on both study areas showed the same general decline before removal with an estimated slope of –0.0036 per year. Following removal, the rate of population change on the treated areas increased to an average of 1.029 but decreased to an average of 0.870 on the untreated areas. The results from this first experiment demonstrated that lethal removal of barred owls allowed the recovery of northern spotted owl populations in the treated portions of our study area. If additional federally funded barred owl removal experiments provide similar results, this could be the foundation for development of a long-term conservation strategy for northern spotted owls. Weisel The federally threatened northern spotted owl (Strix occidentalis caurina) continues to experience range-wide population declines despite two-plus decades of intensive conservation and recovery efforts. Management of the owl has been a highly contentious issue, focused primarily on setting aside critical habitat and preserving old- growth and mature forests in the Pacific Northwest. Recent evidence however, indicates that competition from the invading and closely-related barred owl (Strix varia) is the primary threat to northern spotted owl populations. While agonistic interactions are widely documented, there remains a lack of information on how these two species compete for ecological resources. The redwood region of coastal northwestern California, where spotted owl populations remain relatively high, offered a unique opportunity to study resource competition and partitioning between northern spotted owls and barred owls. I used radio-telemetry to locate both species at night with the objectives of (1) determining home range size of northern spotted owls and barred owls (2) determining foraging habitat selection and resource partitioning of sympatric northern spotted owls and barred owls.

    NORTHERN SPOTTED OWL (Strix occidentalis caurina) Endangered Species Fact Sheet Distribution of northern spotted owls in Oregon Clatsop, Tillamook, Lincoln, Coos, Curry, Josephine, Jackson, Klamath, Douglas, Deschutes, Lane, Jefferson, STATUS: THREATENED Lane, Linn, Benton, Polk, Marion, Yamhill, Washington, Multnomah, Clackamas, Wasco, Hood River, Columbia counties The northern spotted owl was federally listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1990. In 1992, areas of critical habitat were designated to further protect this subspecies on federal lands. Historical Status and Current Trends The northern spotted owl is believed to have historically inhabited most forests throughout southwestern British Columbia, western Washington and Oregon, and northwestern California as far south as the San Francisco Bay. Loss and adverse modification of nesting, roosting and foraging habitat due to timber harvesting, land conversions, natural disturbances such as fire and windstorms, and increased competition with barred owls, however, have led to a decline of northern spotted owls throughout much of their historic range. Today spotted owls are particularly rare in British Columbia, the Cascade mountains of northern Washington, the Coast ranges of southwest Washington and northwest Oregon. A large and virtually isolated population persists on the Olympic peninsula. Estimates suggest that the amount of suitable habitat available to spotted owls has been reduced by over 60% in the last 190 years. Owl numbers appear to have declined annually since 1985 when many studies began. Although the listing of the spotted owl as threatened and the designation of critical habitat offer some protection for the spotted owl on federal lands, past trends suggest that much of the remaining unprotected habitat could disappear in 10 to 30 years.

    The California Spotted Owl: Current State of Knowledge Chapter 2: The Biology of the California Spotted Owl R.J. Gutiérrez, Douglas J. Tempel, and M. Zachariah Peery1 Introduction The spotted owl (Strix occidentalis) is one of the most studied raptors in the world (Lõmus 2004) because forest management throughout its range has the potential to negatively affect owl populations. Information on the California spotted owl (S. o. occidentalis) has been summarized in several literature reviews (e.g., Gutiérrez 1996; Gutiérrez and Carey 1985; Gutiérrez et al. 1995; Keane 2014; Roberts and North 2012; USFWS 1990, 1993, 2003, 2006; Verner et al. 1992a). However, the first comprehensive review of the biology of the California spotted owl was con- ducted by Verner et al. (1992a). Verner et al. (1992a) also served as a foundational chapter for the California spotted owl technical assessment “The California Spotted Owl: A technical Assessment of it’s current status” (CASPO) and its recommended owl management strategy (Verner et al. 1992b). Much has been learned about the biology of the California spotted owl since CASPO including new methods of data analysis to provide scientifically defensible results (Gutiérrez 2004, 2008). In this chapter, we summarize new information on the natural and life history of the California spotted owl that has been gathered primarily since CASPO (Verner et al. 1992b), but we also include new research about other owl subspecies (northern and Mexican spotted owls, S. o. caurina and S. o. lucida, respectively) when it is appli- cable to the California spotted owl.
