THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION ARTS AND SCIENCES THE TRAGIC TALE OF TRAYVON MARTIN: AN ANALYSIS OF REPRESENTATIVE ANECDOTES AND THEIR IMPLICATIONS BRIANA PATRICE ADAMS SPRING 2016 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Communication Arts and Sciences and Spanish with honors in Communication Arts and Sciences Reviewed and approved* by the following: Kirt Wilson Associate Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences Thesis Supervisor Lori Bedell Senior Lecturer of Communication Arts and Sciences Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT For my honors thesis, I will be analyzing the 2013 State of Florida v. Zimmerman case in order to gain a better understanding of the communication patterns surrounding this racially charged case and how coverage differed across various media. In order to execute this project, I will divide my thesis chapters by media type: print media (newspapers/news articles), television media, the National Public Radio and social media. Using a critical approach through Kenneth Burke's concept of the representative anecdote, I hope to uncover the narratives used to describe Trayvon Martin and to elucidate the way the media framed the case for their listeners. How did these narratives overlap? How did they differ? How did the narratives told in black press relate to mainstream coverage? How did the media make sense of the incident and what are the implications of these narratives from a rhetorical standpoint? Using this background, I will offer my interpretation of the case as it unfolded over time, taking into consideration the coverage presented by the media and the representative anecdote theory by Burke. -

Gone Too Soon
Gone too Soon Navigating grief and loss as a result of substance use At First Nothing makes sense. You think you won’t survive. Somewhere deep down you know the reality, but on the surface it is unbelievable, unbelievable. You may sense a small relief as now the worst imaginable has happened. There will be no more unrelenting, debilitating worry, but then there’s guilt at the sense of relief. You sleep away the days or you can’t sleep, you question your god, your own intelligence, your memory, you may lose your appetite or the will to even drink water, you feel exhausted all the time you feel out of control, ungrounded, or you may wish for total control over your environment All these things, and sometimes all it at once. Then You want everything back to the way it was – house clean and orderly, work, bills, laundry but you find you have a new job now: obituary, funeral plans, condolence cards, visitors, the loved one’s possessions, official business with the hospital, the coroner, the police. Grief may hide behind the door for a moment or an hour, but it never walks away. —Leslie McBain About this Handbook This handbook was written by the British Columbia Centre on Substance Use in collaboration with the British Columbia Bereavement Helpline and the Affected Persons Liaison with the British Columbia Coroners Service. It has been adapted for a Canadian audience and translated into French by Health Canada. The handbook was created with the guidance of Leslie McBain and Jennifer Woodside, who generously shared their stories and experiences and what they wish they had known in the immediate days after they lost children to drug-related harms, as well as what they wished they had known in the months and years after. -

Former neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman was acquitted of the crime in July 2013. Facts: Trayvon Benjamin Martin, born February 5, 1995, was a 17-year-old African-American high school student who lived in Miami Gardens, Florida with his mother Sybrina Fulton. In February 2012, Martin was visting his father Tracy Martin in Sanford, Florida after receiving a ten-day suspension from Krop Senior High School. The suspension stemmed from the discovery of drug residue in Martin's book bag. George Michael Zimmerman, born October 5, 1983, was a part-time student at Seminole State College and a neighborhood watch captain at the Retreat at Twin Lakes gated community in Sanford at the time of the shooting. He is married to Shellie (Dean) Zimmerman and is the son of Robert and Gladys Zimmerman. THE DISTRACTION THAT IS STAND YOUR GROUND Katryna Santa Cruz* ABSTRACT Many critics of stand your ground law are motivated by the inaccurate belief that it gives Floridians a license to kill and a get-out-of-jail-free card before trial ever begins. This is a severe misinterpretation of Florida law. Stand your ground does not allow a person to kill anyone who makes him feel threatened, and it certainly does not grant defendants immunity from criminal prosecution based solely on their subjective fear of the victim. However, there still exists an aspect of stand your ground that is in obvious need of critical review and reform: self-defense jury instructions. This comment proposes that to function effectively and justly, Florida jurors acting as decision-makers in criminal trials must be reminded that they inadvertently operate with subconscious bias, and more importantly, that those biases have no place in the courtroom or in their verdict. -

(E)Racing Trayvon Martin Cynthia Lee* INTRODUCTION As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Critical Race Theory [CRT], we have much to celebrate and much work ahead. In its early years, Critical Race Theory was a much-criticized and denigrated body of scholarship. By and large, critical race scholars were law professors of color writing about issues of racial subordination and injustice. Their work was criticized as insufficiently rigorous.1 The use of narrative or storytelling, a prominent feature of much CRT scholarship, was criticized as well.2 Many junior law professors of color were warned by more senior professors of color not to write about race before acquiring tenure as doing so might negatively affect their chances of getting tenure.3 Today, CRT, while still viewed negatively by many, has become a much more respected mode of scholarship. Many law schools today offer courses on Critical Race Theory or Race, Racism, and the Law. -
