Players Trust Luncheon

The OC Players’ Trust is pleased to announce the Guest Speaker at the lunch will be former Wallaby Vice-Captain Morgan Turinui.

Morgan was a centre with a surprising turn of pace whose promise was obvious from his days as a star schoolboy in the 1st XV at ’s Waverley College. His journey to Wal- laby Gold followed the now familiar modern era path.

In 1999 and 2000, as captain, he played for Australian Schools and two years later he was chosen in the Australian team for the U21s World Championships. He debuted for the Waratahs against Auckland in 2003 and within four months played his maiden Test against Ireland in Perth. That same year he won selection to the 2003 squad. Morgan played 20 Tests for Australia. To book your seat at what will be a great event contact Oliver Porter (0417 089 555) or Mike McCrea (0466 152 933)

For those that aren't aware the OC trust is in place as a support function for the playing and coaching groups at Old Collegians. The trust has been used for coaching development, assisting players in times of financial hardship, it's helped some of our Under 18s with touring costs, and also helped send our juniors on their NZ tour in 2017. It's also used to assist with the well being of the player group.

Players can write a letter to the trust, which is the assessed by the directors of the trust, which there are 5 of. If anyone wants any more information, please get in touch with the committee.

Old Collegians 34 v Burnside 26 Tries: Jake Busby, Jack Curtin, Liam McDonough, Alex Rokobaro Conversions: Will Sadler (3), Alex Rokobaro Penalties: Will Sadler, Alex Rokobaro Best Players: Ben Blackall, Jon Mokomoko, Liam McDonough

The First Grade came away with a good win against an in-form Burnside squad and in doing so moved up to second on the ladder. Despite having much less possession, Old Collegians looked more dangerous with ball in hand and the defence for the most part was strong and adapted well. Discipline was an issue and failing to adapt to the adjudication of the game often cost lost attacking opportunities, gifting momentum to Burnside and allowing them ample chances to utilise their strong set piece play.

Both sides looked to take advantage of field position to get early points in the first 10 minutes, with Burnside missing a penalty attempt and Will Sadler successfully kicking 3 points to get Old Colls on the board. Old Col- legians put strong pressure on the Burnside defence, working phases into the 22 where Jhuan Roux was stopped just short of the try line. The forwards secured a lineout on the right side and the backs went wide where Busby broke down the left wing to score in the corner from 20m out, Sadler making the conversion.

Burnside took possession into the Old Colls’ 22 and camped there for a long period, aided by a run of penal- ties against Old Colls that culminated in a yellow card, and gave them multiple opportunities to deploy their driving maul which they eventually pushed over for a try. Old Colls hit back immediately as Roux knocked back a short restart to be gathered by Liam McDonough, then Curtin’s left step saw him through the realign- ing defence for a 50m run to the line and a 17 – 7 lead. Burnside restarted deep and a scrappy clearance gave Burnside another lineout chance 5m out, but Jeshua Graham stole the throw to defuse the drive. Burn- side continued to pressure the line for the last 5, but good coverage in defence and some big hits by Mann, Fleetwood-Pieper and McDonough held them out.

Five minutes into the second half Old Colls had a line-out on half way, with Graham pulling the ball in and Burgess then making ground hitting it up in the centres. The backs went wide left where Busby and Curtin combined to create some space on the wing, before Curtin offloaded to McDonough who ran down the line then in to dive over under the posts. Burnside put some sustained attack together to move up-field, assisted by several penalties conceded by Old Colls, and culminating in a penalty try (and yellow card) after a high tackle close to the line in the 22.

Burnside exploited their man advantage down the left wing to get back into the 22, where they ground away with pick and drives, until Old Colls received a third yellow card and went down to 13 men. Burnside had a scrum 10m out and their backs went right, ultimately getting over the line to reduce their deficit to 24 - 21. Rokobaro was off the bench and grabbed the restart, with Dawes then crashing up into the 22 and the backs went wide right, but an attempted grubber through was blocked and Burnside punished, returning the play to the other end of the field where they had another penalty, driving a line-out over for the lead 26 – 24 with 10 to go.

Burnside tried to kick past the defence from a scrum in the middle of the field but it ricocheted of Rokobaro, who kicked toed it further and pressured the chase, forcing Burnside to put the ball out slightly outside the 22. The backs went right off the line-out and advanced phases, getting a penalty just to the right of the posts which Rokobaro calmly slotted to regain the lead. Nick Howlett ran onto the restart and Burnside were penalised for offside, then concede a free kick off the following line-out. Old Colls took the scrum and Bartlett set the phase in mid-field, where Rokobaro exploited a missing ruck defender to score from 30m out, remi- niscent of his work in the 2016 Grand Final. Dawes rose above to secure the restart and Old Colls withstood some final pressure from Burnside, importantly denying them any bonus points from the match Indigenous Round

Old Collegians 43 vs Burnside 24

Tries: Jim Hopkinson (2), Gareth Roberts (1), David Alo-Emile (1), Tyler Ryan (1), Ben Viljoen (1), Louis Wanchone (1) Conversions (4):

It took just 2 minutes for Gareth Roberts to score the first of our 7 tries in this comprehensive win over Burnside. Stu Robertson duly converted, maintaining his kicking efficiency from last week. Now firing on all cylinders, especially in defence, Tyler Ryan was next to score, Jimmy Hopkinson followed with two and David Alo-Emile closed the half with our 5th. Stu converted 4 all up. Somewhere in there Burnside managed one try (unconverted).

The quiet air of confidence in the half-time huddle, with the score at 33 - 5, was rudely interrupted by a re-energised Burnside scoring within a few minutes of the restart. We were able to rest the initiative back when Ben Viljoen broke strongly down the right side and blunted their resurgence. Next it was Louis opportu- nity, and well taken it was. Stu's boot magic now abandoned him, so we settled for 10 points.

As the half past progressed Burnsides' tails were up and we could sense that they, at least, thought they were well in the contest. And they did score two converted tries to close out the match. Not too gloomy though as we continued to defended well and snuffed out most of Burnside's efforts, and really, they were never in it. The final score 42 - 24.

Congrats to Max Monfries starting at Scum Half and going a great job. Also great to have Louis Wanchone starting his first game, on the left wing. David Alo-Emile and Stu Robertson were once again at the forefront of this win. Gareth Roberts, Alfie Malcom, Al Ward and Kees Young also fantastic contributors. As was Ruan Fourie- and sad to see him at the end of the game with (what's almost certainly) a broken arm. But it was Jack Darby's creativity in attack and stout, gritty defence at inside centre that stood out in this high quality encounter.

Old Collegians 22 vs Burnside 20

A Cold but sunny day with another impressive 3rd grade squad for our line-up against Burnside. From the onset, it was apparent that this Burnside 3rd grade had made leaps and bounds of improvement since our last encounter. It was to be hard fought and uphill battle for us to win today.

Burnside make some early breaks with a very effective attack against what should have been a better defence. Not long into the first half, Burnside put the first score on the board with a try and a conversion. As the half continued, the pressure did not let up and we’d have to pull up our socks a significant way to take the win for this round. Sending the pressure back the other way, we managed a hard fought and won try and conversion to level the score for a time. Burnside returned fire with a lucky try before the half time whistle.

The second half was proving to be no easier task with the pressure and enthusiasm taking a step increase as both sides could see victory within their grasp. A tense half continued with another try for each put on scoreboard. A Final try from our boy edged on top in the final ten minutes.

We managed to hold them back from the remainder of the game to secure the win on the slimmest of margins.

Old Collegians 29 vs Burnside 40

Saturday saw our Under 18s boys head out on our hallowed Tregenza turf. After a long break due to unfortunate circumstances and lack of numbers, we were able to step over the white line with confidence and gusto. Our mighty team started out strong which was too much for a formidable Burnside team. After the break, our boys were keen for a game and it showed in the spirit in which they played their game. With 12 players on the paddock, they played with heart, and played for one another, which enabled a strong lead to be created over Burnside in the first half. The determination that the boys played with helped when it came to contact and the overlap that the other side had. It was an electric game which took our breath away at the pure joy and incredible rugby that the boys put on display. The boys scored a few early tries, with an excellent boot from Max Monfries to our flanker-come-winger Jake Elias, they were some incredible tries to witness. Burnside started their campaign just before half-time, however our boys were not fazed by the scoreboard as we cam into a very proud and positive half-time talk.

All around we had some incredible individual efforts, some stand out moments were Luke Robertson’s charge down of the 22 drop out which he would have felt for many days afterwards, Jasper Stentiford’s clearing out of the rucks, some of the early line-outs from our forward pack; Nick Brady, Jett Sinnott, Marquell Parry and Max Bowen, and finally Jake Elias’ dives to score two of our tries in the first half. The game was incredibly tense but the vibes from the team, the bench, and the sideline were very positive. We then got to work again to start the second half. Burnside were the first to score but that momentum was cut short after Max Monfries put in a great kicking restart which was picked up by Christian Wills on the full, driven through the Burnside with his superb footwork and rewarded with a solid try. The faithful OC crowd were out in numbers supporting the boys and a win felt imminent. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. Once Burnside started to exploit the over-lap, they had on our outside the tries started to stack up against us. It was a narrow win, and a win that was only won through their ability to roll on subs and force us to chase on the outside, tiring us out more.

Everyone played out of their skin and had their best team performance of the year. Nick Brady was our absolute stand out star on the day making huge tackles and runs with an awesome work rate. Jake Elias playing on the wing and not in his usual blindside flanker role, where he has been a work horse for us all season, had an outstanding day scoring two brilliant tries. Our captain, Max Monfries, was great yet again leading from the front with great chat and individual skills proving he was a level above his opposite Burnside number 10.

We are extremely proud of each and every one who counts themselves apart of our team. Every single player was very proud of their own and each other’s efforts, and the smiles on not only their faces but their parents and the OC Fans were breathtaking. Barossa Rams at Lyndoch Oval is our next target for this upcoming week which will be a tough game but after Saturdays’ performance it certainly proves nothing is impossible. Under 16’s—Match Report

Old Collegians 10 vs Burnside 19

This week the U16s took at Burnside under lights on Friday night. This clash promised to be very physical, and delivered on that with defense for both teams holding up keeping the scores at zero all for 20 minutes.

College were first to score a team try after Carl took a quick penalty and the ball passing seamlessly through the hands of our backs for Jayden to score from the wing. Burnside leveled the scores just before halftime following a penalty was called their way 10m out from the try line.

The second half saw college score first again after Noah spotted an overlap on the blindside and sending the ball to the backs with Carl committing three defenders opening up the opportunity for Jayden to score a second try for the day. Unfortunately Burnside scored twice more with the one coming from numerous phases by their forward pack, and the second after some confusion by the referee with an injured played just off to the side of the playing area.

The team played really well with the forwards dominating in many scrums and line outs, and some great running and tackles from our backs. Unfortunately there were a few factors going against our team which saw Burnside take the win with the final score of 19-10.

A big thank you to all the supporters who braved the cold night to watch the u14s and u16s play, especially the senior men who were heard cheering from the sideline

Old Collegians 5 vs Burnside 52

From the beginning we knew this was going to be an incredibly difficult game. Burnside team dominated our side in size and speed and played some very well structured rugby.

Our team however never lost faith and played some of our best rugby to date. Our forwards fought hard all match long with Hanno de Klerk running in our only try.

The coaching staff are incredibly proud of the fact that all players gave their all to the final whistle and never once dropped their heads. True sportsmen and an asset to the club.

Old Collegians 47 v Burnside 28

Tries: Thamsanqa Pule, Tyson Hazzard (2), Ivan Arnold & Fergus Keighran (3) Conversions: Ivan Arnold (6)

On Saturday 27th July we welcomed Burnside RUFC to Tregenza Oval. It was a sunny morning and we had an eager group of U12’s wanting to take the field. With the start of the school term we were back to a full squad and stronger numbers at training.

We had a good team warm-up and started the game strong with Thamsanqa Pule opening the scoreboard for us, followed by a successful conversion from Ivan. We dominated up front and secured good ball for the back line. This led to Tyson Hazzard on the wing running in our second try, receiving the ball beautifully from the back of the scrum and scoring out wide, again successfully converted. We kept applying consistent pressure and soon after we found ourselves 3 meters out from another scoring opportunity, Ivan gathered the ball and drove over, taking us to a 19 – 0 lead.

We played with a fair amount of confidence at this point and Fergus Keighran having played exceptionally well in the centres this year, managed to run in 3 beautiful consecutive tries, all three converted by Ivan, taking us to a strong lead of 40 – 0.

That is unfortunately when our dominance was tested, with Burnside coming back and scoring just before the half time whistle. The moment we allowed them to half some possession, they looked dangerous in attack. Half time score: 40 – 7.

Their dominance continued well into the second half with us looking somehow a bit fatigued and unsettled in structure, following several changes of the bench. Burnside dominated by far the majority of the second half, running up the ball strongly and even around the ruck areas. They clawed their way back into the game scoring another 3 consecutive tries, all of them successfully converted. Their very young full back and nr. 7 flanker dis- played some talent when they got the momentum and could play some attacking rugby with the ball in hand, taking the score to: 40 – 28.

Areas of our game which we’ll continue to work on strongly during the remainder of the season include ball se- curity, we let ourselves down on several occasions losing the ball in contact and twice in the action of scoring. We will also be working hard on how to more effectively attack space and still improve our tackling technique and execution.

We managed to secure better possession towards the end of the second half and worked our way towards the Burnside try line for Tyson Hazzard to finish the game off with a beautiful try in the corner and Ivan success- fully converting. Full Time Score: 47 – 28. This was defi- nitely a much closer and good competitive game for our U12’s. With lots of positives and areas to work on.

Special Mentions: A special thank you to the Tanner-family for taking care of our jerseys and to Noah Wilson and all the others who helped with our team’s sideline duties on Saturday.

We look forward to seeing you all at training during the week.

Old Collegians vs Burnside

Well what can we say about this match? It a matter of what we didn’t do.

We relied on too few players to do the most of the work that the whole team should be doing.

Going into a ruck and just standing there is not what is expected, we need to push over the ball making it available for our backs.

Good tackling is not carried out with arms extended; we need to get our shoulders into the chest and lower body of our opponents.

Once a ruck is formed by our opponents it is pointless all 15 of us going into a non-pushing ruck and not having a backline to defend our try line.

This is some of the poor play we as coaches saw on Saturday

We can and have done better.

Some of the outstanding play was our tackling and it was needed, but this was only by a few players namely Angus S, Angus M, Manuel, Patrick (PJ) and Alice who did 80% of the tackling.

This is not a game we will remember but one we must learn from, so this week at training and our scratch match we will be working hard on all of the above.

Under 8’s—Match Report

Old Collegians vs Burnside

After a long break the U8 team were ready to get back in action against our local rivals. We fielded our usual strong team and supported our opponents to even up the numbers. Thanks to Anna, Archie and Sam for spend- ing some time playing for Burnside.

After our last outing at Brighton we spent time at training working on defence play. This week our defensive effort was significant and we saw good tackling and team work. With the strong tackling we had lots of time on the ball and plenty of attacking play. There was a marked improvement from our last game in supporting run- ners and passing.

Our tries were scored by Ellis, James (2), Noah, Sam, Will P (2) and Will T. With our great defensive effort we kept a clean sheet.

Special mention for play of the week to Archie for a great break from the half way line whilst playing for Burn- side with him and the great chase and covering tackle from Ellis a couple of meters out. Great rugby!

Thanks to our officials for the week - Alex Punshon (Referee) Under 6/7’s—Match Report

Old Collegians vs Burnside

On a superb Saturday morning - after a bit of a "sleep in" - we had a fantastic turnout of kids to take on Burnside. In fact, both sides had such a great turnout that we were able to scramble a second pitch for two 6 on 6 games (swapping teams at half time) so everyone got a good run and had lots of opportunities to get involved in the ac- tion.

Thanks to Campbell and Gordon Cowe for offering their refereeing talents again this week. It is a difficult job at times, this week proving no exception, but without a referee there can be no game, so thank you.

The team led by Becca had two very even halves - 5 tries each half to Old Collegians, and 5 tries each half to Burnside. Special mention to Aston who scored one try in the first half, and 4 in the second. Other try scorers were Chase (2), Mia, Joah, and Cooper.

The team led by Will also had pretty even games - 4-4 in the first half, but going down 4 tries to Burnside’s 5 in the second half. Tries to Struan (4), Will T (3) and Felipe.

Against strong opposition both teams played well this week, with every single player contributing both in attack and defence, and (mostly!) maintaining focus for the whole game.
