introduction TAIWAN’S LITERATURE OF TRANSGRESSIVE SEXUALITY 8 fran martin On the first damp, gray day of 1999, an unsuspecting passerby en route to the vegetable market in Taipei’s Gongguan neighborhood, near National Taiwan University, might have been startled to stum- ble on a street-side drag show in full swing, aswirl with all the fabu- lous frocks and stellar talents of some of the city’s better-known drag artists. The inquiring pedestrian might then have peered through the window of the adjacent bookstore to see stacks of Chinese paper- backs and lifestyle magazines crammed into a tiny retail area, jostling for space with rainbow flags, buttons, and posters. It was the opening party for Gin Gin’s, Taiwan’s first dedicated gay and lesbian bookstore. Gin Gin’s opening in the final year of the 1990s stands as a fitting culmination of a remarkable decade in which lesbian, gay, and queer sexualities became a major focus of public attention and anxiety in Taiwan’s public sphere.1 It would not be an exaggeration to say that 1 introduction the 1990s marked a radical shift in the way sexuality was thought and spoken about in Taiwan, suggesting the stirrings of a new, pub- lic sexual culture unprecedented not only in Taiwan but in any of the Chinese societies of the Asia-Pacific region. The decade witnessed an extraordinary efflorescence of sexual subcultures and of discus- sion—both hostile and amicable—about homosexuality in public fora such as newspapers, television, radio, and Internet chat rooms, as well as at universities and academic conferences. -

It has distinctive national, political, and artistic characteristics, conveying a strong spirit of resistance and patriotism, and inspiring young Marxist pioneers and countless people to fight bloody battles. The red song is a unique cultural phenomenon in China, conforms to the Marxist view of practice and ideology, and has played a very important historical role in the ideological and political work of the Chinese Communist Party. To study and analyze the historical role of red songs in ideological and political work, to be able to learn the development process of red songs, analyze its development rules, and correctly guide the masses to establish a correct world outlook, outlook on life, and values, which is helpful to explore the new socialist outlook of red songs. Performance, Meaning and Ideology in the Making of Legitimacy: the Celebrations of the People’S Republic of China’S Sixty-Year Anniversary

Pre-typeset draft Performance, Meaning and Ideology in the Making of Legitimacy: The Celebrations of the People’s Republic of China’s Sixty-Year Anniversary Abstract This article analyzes how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) uses the sixty-year anniversary of the People’s Republic of China to construct its legitimacy. We analyze the elaborate celebrations, which involved not only a large-scale military parade, but also a civilian pageant and various cultural products. By adopting a discourse analytical approach, our analysis shows how the celebrations are devised explicitly with a domestic audience in mind, and how they represent an attempt to bridge the various ruptures between contemporary Chinese modernity and the nation’s revolutionary past. Pre-typeset draft Introduction 1 October 2009 marked the sixty-year anniversary of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The elaborate celebrations, which involved not only official activities such as forums, intellectual conferences, and a large-scale parade, but also various cultural products, such as arts exhibitions, TV series, and movies, have again brought questions to the fore that have occupied students of political science and of China for roughly two decades. Ever since the fall of Communist rule in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, many Western observers have been waiting for the PRC to become part of what Huntington (1991) called the “Third Wave”: the last series of states that would transform from authoritarian into liberal democratic systems.
