MARGO SAWYER - NARRATIVE C.V.

I was born in D.C. in1958, I received most of my formal education in the United Kingdom. I started my art training in 1976 at the Brighton Polytechnic Faculty of Art and Design. In 1980, I received a B.A. Honors degree from

Chelsea School of Art in London. My interest in contemporary American art led me to the United States, where in the summer of 1980 I was awarded a scholarship to Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. That same year

I entered the sculpture program at Yale University, where I received my M.F.A. in 1982. After completing graduate school, I spent one year in India on a Fulbright-Hays Research Grant (1982-83). I returned to New York and worked for Paula Cooper Gallery and studio assistant to: Joel Shapiro, Jackie Winsor and Michael Hurson. In 1986-87 I was a Fellow at the American Academy in Rome and was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Grant and

New York State Council for the Arts Grant for Public Art. In September 1988, I joined the faculty of the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin. Since being in Texas I have conducted research in India and Myanmar, funded in part by Travel Grants Fund For Artists, 1994 (a joint project through the National

Endowment for the Arts and Arts International). For a year and a half I lived in Japan, made possible by a Fulbright

Senior Research Fellowship, 1995-96, and a Japan Foundation Visual Arts Fellowship, 1996. There I studied the aesthetic structure and meanings of Japan's traditional landscape design and provided a better understanding of their relationship with contemporary Japanese and Western Installation Art. In 2000 I was a resident at [ArtPace], A

Foundation for Contemporary Art, San Antonio. In 2001 I was awarded a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant.

In 2003 I had solo exhibitions at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh and in 2004 at the Blaffer Gallery at the

University of Houston. In 2008, I received a Faculty Research Grant from the University of Texas at Austin, for a faculty competitive sabbatical to complete the larges work of my life “Synchronicity of Color- Red & Blue” for the city of Houston and Discovery Green. This work was just honored in Public Art in Review 2009, by America for the Arts and Public Art in Review.
