Rotary Club of Ballarat South The Bulletin Volume 42, Issue 2 7 July 2008 West We Go!! Or Wuestewald Ho!! Chairman Barry gave a ‘short’ introduction to our guest speaker, Rotarian David Stewart. David provided a wonderful outline of his recent trip to The West occasionally accompanied by other ‘gypsies’ from the Club - the Murphys, Drennans and Wuestewalds, whom they travelled with across the Nullarbor. Caravanning is a great way to see the country, enjoy great company and make new friends (especially during Happy Hour which commences around 4pm for certain Rotarians). David provided a number of stories and reports on the trip across the Nullarbor, through the vast wheat Inside this issue: growing area including Wirrulla where they were devastated to find the pub was closed on a Sunday; to camping at a sheep station near Norseman. Obviously many stories and incidents which happened on the trip – stayed on the trip! Parting company from the others the Stewarts headed to Kalgoorlie where they took in many sights, Annual Vocational 2 observed the local customs and studied some business opportunities, viewed of course from David’s Service Report professional perspective. Final conclusion: $250 went nowhere and they didn’t do lay-bys. Rejoined the Drennans and the Murphys near Esperance for a short time, then headed off solo again 2007/2008 3 towards the west coast. An interesting stop was at New Norcia, a quaint little place settled by the Bene- Attendance Figures dictine monks, who now own the entire town including, the pub, service station and a vast amount of the surrounding land. Headed up the coast to Geraldton, visiting a very moving memorial Club Announcements 4 to the 645 lives lost on the HMAS Sydney. Further along is Kalbarri where an enormous amount of development is taking place. Their Group 8 Clubs 4 trip also took in Monkey Mia, Denham, Carnarvon (a trip on the ‘coffee pot’ train) to Coral Bay where they snorkelled amongst shoals of fish instead of taking up the option to swim with the Whale Watties Weekly 4 Sharks for $395pp. Waffle The journey through to Pilbara is very memorable, especially the stop at ‘thief roadhouse’ – fuel $2.12/lt and ½ a dim sim for $1.95! Fuel at Tom Price was a bit more reasonable at $1.65/lt. Forthcoming Meetings 4 The Stewarts enjoyed listening to a number of ‘talking books’ T & T Teams throughout the journey, including one on Red Dog and were very surprised to find a statue Anniversaries: in Dampier. The journey continued up the coast, along the eighty mile beach to Broome, then off the highway to Cape Leveque (now Inductions with only 90km of unsealed road), back along the Northern Hwy including a stop in Halls Creek (notorious for its crime), Kununurra, Ken SkilbeckSkilbeck————JulyJuly 16 1987 Victoria River, Katherine to Darwin. Page 2 The Bulletin President Michael announced that unfortunately the complete Vocational Service report and the Attendance Report for the 2007/2008 Rotary Year were not printed in their entirety in the 41st Annual Report of the Club. They are provided below for the information of members. 2007-2008 Vocational Service (Annual Report) It is with a great deal of pleasure I present this Annual Report on behalf of the Vocational Service Committee. Firstly, Could I take this opportunity to thank the Committee for their support and participation over the past twelve months. In particular I express my sincere thanks to my Deputy John White for the great support he gave me. John was always prepared to chair committee meetings and to present to the Club and Board when I was unavailable due to work commitments. Vocational service is the foundation on which Rotary membership has been built and is one of the original Four Avenues of Rotary Service. October is Vocational month within the Rotary calendar and the Rotary Club of Ballarat South took this opportunity to recognise an individual who had made an impact within his vocation through his skills, commitment and attitude. Rotarians will recall Ashley Hamilton being awarded the Bill Rosenow Metal Trades Award at our Club dinner on 11 October 2007. In 1989/90, former club member Bill Rosenow established a scholarship in his name for a Metal Trades Award to be presented to an apprentice within this field. Ashley was nominated by the School of Mines. The Pride of Workmanship Awards were presented on 6 December 2007. Instigated in 1975 by the Rotary Club of Pennant Hills, the Pride of Workmanship Program seeks to identify individuals whose exemplary contributions to their vocations are worthy of acknowledgement. The Pride of Workmanship Awards are a great way to promote Vocational Service, the Rotary Club of Ballarat South and at the same time reward employees for their contribution. Ten nominations were received and Rotarians will recall Pride of Workmanship Awards being presented to: Donna Mason; Kate Davis; Brett Morrison; Jeff Rowe; Donna O’Keefe; Todd Mc Clelland; Matthew Foster; Val Sarah; Brenda Haskins and Melinda Mitchell. During the year Rotarians gave regular “job talks” in relation to their vocation/employment. These brief talks provided an opportunity to increase the awareness of vocations within the club and for members to gain an understanding of jobs other than their own. Thank you to Committee member Alan Maloney for taking responsibility to arrange the job talks. The name of “Rotary” originated with the practice of rotating meetings sites among members’ places of business and hence our Industry Visits remained an excellent way for rotarians to share their vocations with the club. Two industry visits were held, the first to the University of Melbourne, School of Forestry at Creswick and the second to Maxitrans Australia – Ballarat, in May. Thank you to Committee member John Conaughton for taking responsibility to organise these visits. Sponsorship of the Dr John Griffiths Nursing Scholarships through the Australian Catholic University – Aquinas Ballarat and the University of Ballarat was again supported. Dr John Griffiths is a former member of this club. At the Australian Catholic University - Aquinas Awards presentation on 23 April 2008, four scholarships to the value of $750 each were presented to Emma Carey, Catriona Hitchcock, Kylie Peel and Miriam Lyman for Excellence in Nursing and Community Involvement. Similarly, at the University of Ballarat, School of Nursing awards presentation on 5 May 2008, three scholarships to the value of $750 were presented to Jessica Kelly (Leadership in Student Affairs), Anna Kirkpatrick (Outstanding Achievement in the Study of Nursing) and Laura Hamon (Outstanding Achievement in the Study of Nursing). Gold Sponsorship of the WorldSkills Australia Program, Ballarat Wimmera Region to the value of $5000 was also maintained. Worldskills, a competition program for young Australians interested in challenging their skills and abilities against other young skilled people in their region, nation and internationally, is Australia’s largest and most prestigious trade and skills competition. Andrew Dower, Ballarat WorldSkills Team Leader, spoke to the Club on 1 May 2008 and introduced competitors Karla Preston – Beauty Care and Brenton Murray –Cabinet Making. Vocational Service was also involved with the Shine on Awards program. Originating in Queensland, the Shine On Awards recognise the personal achievements and dedicated commitment to community service of people with disabilities. This year two nominations were received. At the awards presentation in Wangaratta on 4 May 2008, David Knowles received a Certificate of Commendation and John Harrison received both a Certificate of Commendation and a Shine on Award. Both David and John joined the Club for dinner in May, following their awards. Thank you to Rotarian David Boyes for accepting the responsibility for co-ordination of these awards. Vocational Service also provided support and guidance to the Ballarat South East Rotaract Club. I would like to thank Mike Rothwell for attending the Rotaract meetings. I have been fortunate to have worked with a very cohesive and active Board, very ably led by David Gibb. I would like to thank President Dave for giving me the opportunity to serve in the capacity of Vocational Services Director and I look forward to working with Michael Coutts in 2008-2009.
