Fifteen years after Jerry Garcia died on August 9, 1995, his namesake ice cream, Cherry Garcia, continues to be the best-selling flavor for the Ben & Jerry’s brand, according to spokesperson Liz Stewart. This tidbit of information might seem trivial, but it underscores a larger point: the influence of the Grateful Dead’s guiding force continues to be felt in popular culture in ways few people would have imagined when he was a cult figure back in the 1960s and ’70s. Over the decades, Garcia’s reputation grew as he became a symbol of both the counterculture and a do-your-own-thing aesthetic he exemplified with his music. For many Deadheads, as these fans are called, membership in this community has been a major component of their identity and following the band from place to place had provided structure and meaning to their everyday lives. Many older Deadheads continue to participate not only via online, recorded, and print media but also by attending performances of bands including surviving members of the Grateful Dead, cover bands, and other jam bands. This chapter examines the challenges to identity maintenance and community participation faced by Deadheads as they age, the ways in which the community has addressed the aging of its population, and how fans have adapted the ways in which they participate in the community to allow continuity in their identity as Deadheads.

    Daughter of a Deadhead “When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.” –Mark Twain I’ve recently come to find that each time I get off the phone with my father, Eric Gold, there’s a newly developed connection and understanding between the two of us. I began to question if there was a change in his behavior. The conclusion was simple-I’ve grown older. I have always admired my dad for his unconditional love and positive mental attitude. Even though we lived separately, our love for each other was always as strong as ever. But as most kids do, I frequently failed to see things from a parent’s perspective. One of my earliest memories of my father was him singing Phish’s “Dog-Faced Boy” as I fell asleep in my bed. Eventually, he had me memorize the lyrics with him. Even at the young age of five, I was confused by the lyrics and abnormal arrangements of music that strayed away from Disney Channel’s pop hits. At the same time, dad was equally as bothered by the early-2000 bubblegum pop that shaped my brain into a mainstream machine. You can bet that if I were to be in the car with him, the Ally&AJ or Cheetah Girl CD’s (depending on the season) wouldn’t last for more than twenty minutes before he lost his mind.
