The History of Christian-Muslim Relations, Texts and Studies presents the surviving record of past encounters in authoritative, fully introduced text editions and annotated translations, and also monograph and collected studies. It illustrates the development in mutual perceptions as these are contained in surviving Christian and Muslim writings, and makes available the arguments and rhetorical strategies that, for good or for ill, have left their mark on attitudes today. The series casts light on a history marked by intellectual creativity and occasional breakthroughs in communication, although, on the whole beset by misunderstanding and misrepresentation. By making this history better known, the series seeks to contribute to improved recognition between Christians and Muslims in the future. Introduction And they say: “None shall enter Paradise unless he be a Jew or a Christian.” Those are their (vain) desires. Say: “Produce your proof if ye are truthful.” The Holy Qur’an, 2:111 This book examines the works of three of the earliest known Christian theo- logians to explain and defend their beliefs in Arabic. In particular, it deals with their writings on the doctrine of the Trinity, a doctrine that is central to the Christian faith and one that has proven to be a fundamental theological stumbling block throughout the history of Christian-Muslim interaction. The Christian authors in question lived at the heart of the Islamic empire in the early ninth century C.E. and, during that period, composed a number of writ- ings expounding their beliefs in a language which, following the Arab-Islamic conquests of the mid to late seventh century, was on the way to becoming the primary language of the newly established Islamic Empire. Coincidentally, the three authors who are most familiar to scholars of this period, and who will form the subject of this book, also happen to represent the three major Christian denominations of the time. Theodore Abū Qurra (d.c. 830), the subject of chapter two, was the Melkite Bishop of Ḥarrān at some point during his life. Abū Rāʾiṭa (d.c. 835), whose writings are investigated in the third chapter, was a Syrian Orthdodox (Jacobite) cleric from the modern day Iraqi town of Takrīt. The last of our scholars, ʿAmmār al-Baṣrī (d.c. 850), represented the East Syrian (Nestorian) Church, and is thought to have come from Basra, one of the major intellectual centres of the ʿAbbāsid empire at that time.

    Biblia Arabica An Update on the State of Research Nathan Gibson, Miriam L. Hjälm, Peter Tarras, Ronny Vollandt, Vevian Zaki1 Abstract The aim of this contribution is to review some of the major areas of current research on the Arabic Bible, along with the factors and trends contributing to them. Also we present some of the tools that are currently under development in the Biblia Arabica team, Munich. We provide here a very condensed survey of the transmission of traditions, as well as ways that biblical manuscripts in Arabic have been analysed and classified, covering both Old Testament/ Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. Overall, the lack of critical editions for Arabic biblical texts in general reflects not just the overwhelming number of versions and manuscripts, but also the fundamental challenge these translations present on the level of textuality. Standard paradigms of authorship and transmission break down in the face of the complex reuse, revision, and layering of paratexts seen in these texts. It is the careful study of manuscripts, not simply as texts but also as physical objects, which holds promise for reconstructing the practices of producers and consumers of the Arabic Bible. A union catalogue of Arabic Bible manuscripts will gather the paleographic and codicological information necessary for further research. Moreover, it will link manuscripts, translators, and scribes to the online Bibliography of the Arabic Bible, which is intended to be a comprehensive, classified, and searchable reference tool for secondary literature. In conclusion, scholarship of the Arabic Bible now has considerable momentum, but must continue to keep its fundamental resource – that of manuscripts – in the foreground of research.

I pursue this task by studying fī al-Dīn wa-l-Dawlah (On Religion and State) by the Muslim ʽAlī b. Lamoreaux HEODORE AB*U QURRAH (d. ca 820) is a figure well known to specialists in the study of early Christian Arabic literature, and for good reasons.1 Not only was he one of Tthe first Christians to write in Arabic, he was also one of the first to offer a sustained theological defense of Christianity against the claims of Islam.     ABSTRACT When the Crescent Met the Cross C. Carter Barnett Director: Abjar Bahkou, Ph.D. The Abbasid Empire supplanted the Umayyad Empire in 749 AD and within two- hundred years it had initiated a Golden Age of science, culture, and religious thought. This Golden Age was made possible by both the Muslim and Christian subjects of the empire. My thesis explores the dynamic relationship between Muslims and Christians since the beginning of the Arab conquests in the Levant to the end of the First Abbasid Period in 950 AD. The first chapter examines the defining encounters between Muslims and Christians prior to the Abbasid Empire. The second chapter describes how Christians and Muslims collaborated to initiate a translation movement in the Abbasid empire. The translation movement brought thought from the Greek and Persian empires to the Abbasid capital in Baghdad. The final chapter reviews the historical development of the First Abbasid period so that we might learn from past relations. Overall, this thesis describes the first encounters between Muslims and Christians in order to learn from the past.     Voices of the Converted: Christian Apostate Literature in Medieval Islam Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Clint Hackenburg, M.A. Graduate Program in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Kevin van Bladel, Advisor Bilal Orfali Hadi Jorati Copyright by Clint Hackenburg 2015 Abstract This dissertation seeks to discuss the dialectical (kalām) and scriptural (both biblical and qurʾānic) reasoning used to justify Christian conversion to Islam during the medieval period (750 - 1492 C.E.). With this objective in mind, I will compare and contrast the manners in which five different Arabophone authors, ʿAlī ibn Sahl Rabban al-Ṭabarī (d. ca. 860), al-Ḥasan ibn Ayyūb (fl. ca. mid-tenth century), Naṣr ibn Yaḥyā (d. 1163 or 1193), Yūsuf al-Lubnānī (d. ca mid-thirteenth century), and Anselm Turmeda (d. 1423), all Christian converts to Islam, utilized biblical and qurʾānic proof-texts alongside dialectical reasoning to invalidate the various tenets of Christianity while concurrently endorsing Islamic doctrine. These authors discuss a wide variety of contentious issues pervading medieval Christian-Muslim dialogue. Within the doctrinal sphere, these authors primarily discuss the Trinity and Incarnation, the nature of God, and the corruption of the Bible (taḥrīf). Within the exegetical realm, these authors primarily discussed miracles, prophecy, and prophetology. Moreover, this dissertation seeks to discern how these authors and their works can be properly contextualized within the larger framework of medieval Arabic polemical literature. That is to say, aside from parallels and correspondences with one another, what connections, if any, do these authors have with other contemporary Arabophone Muslim, Christian, and, to a lesser extent, Jewish apologists and polemicists? ii In the course of my research on Christian apostate literature, I have come to two primary conclusions.
