Woven from Nothing: Analysis of Fiber Sculpture of Mother Teaching Daughter to Weave and the Role of Weaving in Chancay Culture Woven From Nothing: Analysis of Fiber Sculpture of Mother Teaching Daughter to Weave and the Role of Weaving in Chancay Culture Tori Teague ARH 3200: Ancient American Art and Architecture Dr. Wingfield December 6, 2018 Abstract The Chancay culture of the Late Intermediate Period, spanning c. 1000-1476 CE, emphasized the importance of death and ritual through woven works, specifically their fiber sculptures. These sculptures often depicted the medium in which they were created, featuring figures commonly identified as female weaving with backstrap looms. My primary resources for this topic include digital images of woven Latin American indigenous artworks, information from the museums that house the works, scholarly journals, and my own observation. I noticed that, by focusing on weaving scenes, the Chancay people reassert their beliefs as well as the spiritual nature of this craft. Weaving’s significance stems from its connection to creation, aligning with creation myths the majority of indigenous peoples in Latin America that often reference the world being woven out of nothing by the earth mother; however, its connection to the dead and the underworld comes through the layering of the fabrics, wrapping the thread to build up the figures in the fiber sculptures as one would wrap a body to prepare it for burial and the soul for rebirth. These fiber sculptures were buried in the tombs with the bodies and often found with sewing instruments, indicating the deceased’s connection to weaving either as a profession or a spiritual connection. Utilizing comparanda pieces, I deduced that Fiber Sculpture of Mother Teaching Daughter to Weave gives insight on these rituals focused on life and death as well as the daily life of the Chancay people, according to what they valued in their society. .

Hand weaving is a lost art form that needs to be revived by students and young textile professionals, thus being part of the inspiration for this garment. Inspiration was also drawn from a colorful piece of artwork at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Frank Philip Stella’s Raqqa II is a fusion of bright, vibrant colors that seamlessly intertwine, following the curves and edges of the canvas. I believe that the shapes formed by the bands of color, mirror the shape of the model’s body because of the form fitting dress.

Early civilizations used color and design to distinguish themselves and to set themselves apart from others. Textile printing is the most important and versatile of the techniques used to add design, color, and specialty to textile fabrics. It can be thought of as the coloring technique that combines art, engineering, and dyeing technology to produce textile product images that had previously only existed in the imagination of the textile designer. Textile printing can realistically be considered localized dyeing. In ancient times, man sought these designs and images mainly for clothing or apparel, but in today’s marketplace, textile printing is important for upholstery, domestics (sheets, towels, draperies), floor coverings, and numerous other uses. The exact origin of textile printing is difficult to determine. However, a number of early civilizations developed various techniques for imparting color and design to textile garments. Batik is a modern art form for developing unique dyed patterns on textile fabrics very similar to textile printing. Batik is characterized by unique patterns and color combinations as well as the appearance of fracture lines due to the cracking of the wax during the dyeing process. Batik is derived from the Japanese term, “Ambatik,” which means “dabbing,” “writing,” or “drawing.” In Egypt, records from 23-79 AD describe a hot wax technique similar to batik.

    Tai Smith - "Pictures made of wool": The Gender of Labor at the Bauhaus Weaving Workshop (1919-23) Back to Issue 4 "Pictures made of wool": The Gender of Labor at the Bauhaus Weaving Workshop (1919-23) by T'ai Smith © 2002 In 1926, one year after the Bauhaus had moved to Dessau, the weaving workshop master Gunta Stölzl dismissed the earlier, Weimar period textiles, such as Hedwig Jungnik’s wall hanging from 1922 [Fig. 1], as mere “pictures made of wool.”1 In this description she differentiated the early weavings, from the later, “progressivist” textiles of the Dessau workshop, which functioned industrially and architecturally: to soundproof space or to reflect light. The weavings of the Weimar years, by contrast, were autonomous, ornamental pieces, exhibited in the fashion of paintings. Stölzl saw this earlier work as a failure because it had no progressive aim. The wall hangings of the Weimar workshop were experimental—concerned with the pictorial elements of form and color—yet at that they were still inadequate, without the larger, transcendental goals of painting, as in the Bauhaus painter Wassily Kandinsky’s Red Spot II from 1921. Stölzl assessed the earlier, “aesthetic” period of weaving as unsuccessful, because its specific strengths were neither developed nor theorized. Weaving in the early Bauhaus lacked its own discursive parameters, just as it lacked a disciplinary history. Evaluated against the “true” picture, painting, weaving appeared a weaker, ineffectual medium. Stölzl’s remark references a fundamental problem that goes unquestioned in the literature concerning the Weimar Bauhaus weaving workshop and the feminized status of the medium.

    SCULPTORS’ JEWELLERY PANGOLIN LONDON FOREWORD The gift of a piece of jewellery seems to have taken a special role in human ritual since Man’s earliest existence. In the most ancient of tombs, archaeologists invariably excavate metal or stone objects which seem to have been designed to be worn on the body. Despite the tiny scale of these precious objects, their ubiquity in all cultures would indicate that jewellery has always held great significance.Gold, silver, bronze, precious stone, ceramic and natural objects have been fashioned for millennia to decorate, embellish and adorn the human body. Jewellery has been worn as a signifier of prowess, status and wealth as well as a symbol of belonging or allegiance. Perhaps its most enduring function is as a token of love and it is mostly in this vein that a sculptor’s jewellery is made: a symbol of affection for a spouse, loved one or close friend. Over a period of several years, through trying my own hand at making rings, I have become aware of and fascinated by the jewellery of sculptors. This in turn has opened my eyes to the huge diversity of what are in effect, wearable, miniature sculptures. The materials used are generally precious in nature and the intimacy of being worn on the body marries well with the miniaturisation of form. For this exhibition Pangolin London has been fortunate in being able to collate a very special selection of works, ranging from the historical to the contemporary. To complement this, we have also actively commissioned a series of exciting new pieces from a broad spectrum of artists working today.

    Karoll UW-L Journal of Undergraduate Research XII (2009) A Comparative Study of the Swennes Woven Nettle Bag and Weaving Techniques Amy Karol Faculty Sponsors: Dr. Connie Arzigian and Dr. David Anderson, Department of Sociology and Archaeology ABSTRACT During recent years, the Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center (MVAC) has acquired permission to look at a beautifully preserved bag from 47Lc84, a rockshelter located in La Crosse County, Wisconsin. The bag is tentatively dated to the Oneota cultural tradition (A.D. 1250-1650) based on pottery sherds associated with it. Nothing of its kind has been found archaeologically in this region before, owing mostly to poor preservation conditions. Due to its uniqueness, there is nothing to compare it to within the Oneota tradition. Therefore, to gain a better understanding of this bag, a cross-cultural study was undertaken. This paper examines separate sites in the American Midwest, as well as textile impressions that are preserved on pottery, the ethnohistoric and early historic record, and modern hand-weaving techniques to determine the textile tradition from which the bag may have emerged as well as how it was constructed. INTRODUCTION Textiles in the archaeological record are poorly preserved in the American Midwest. Only in very few sites are they actually found, and in even fewer are the fragments large enough to be studied in depth. Detailed studies conducted on textiles are not numerous. Lacking in these studies is a cross-cultural comparison of types and materials from sites that do have better preserved textiles to try and determine similarities and differences in textile manufacture.
