Vidya Prasarak Mandal has a tradition of organising various conferences, seminars and workshops at National and International level. Recently we had organised an International Conference on 900th Anniversary of Bhaskaracharya. One of our institutes K.G. Joshi College of Arts and N.G.Bedekar College of Commerce is organising A Two Day National Conference on ‘Women’s Quest for Equality in India- Promises, Problem and Prospects’. Such programmes provide platform to researchers to express their opinions and share their research findings with likeminded people, scholars and students. It is through such conferences that we get an opportunity to know, exchange and expand our universe of ideas, concepts and understanding of the subject. In a way intellectual churning is the motive behind such programmes. The male and female social reformers of the 19th century India played an important role in emancipating women and created awareness in them. As a result women entered the public domain. Some of them even joined the National Independence Movement. After independence, constitutional and legal safeguards were provided to women. Rather the first fundamental right guaranteed to the citizens of India is Right to Equality. But is this right translated into reality? The subject of this conference is indeed critical to the current times for our country. Women are yet to achieve equal status. They are deprived of life expectancy, access to health and medical services, inheritance and educational opportunities. They are underrepresented in political and economic fields. Atrocities like dowry harassment; eve teasing, wife beating, and rape are inflicted upon them. This conference will raise a number of such problems and issues faced by women and deliberate to find solutions to some of them. It will seek to address issues about how women can overcome barriers of society and empower themselves. I wish them success in this objective. Dr. Vijay V. Bedekar Chairman Vidya Prasarak Mandal, Thane, Maharashtra, India. v From the Principal’s desk I am delighted that a National Conference on Women’s Issues called, “Women’s Quest for Equality in India- Promises, Problems and Prospects” is being conducted under the aegis of our Institution, VPM’s K. G. Joshi College of Arts and N. G. Bedekar College of Commerce, Thane. At an Age and Time when gender equality and women’s empowerment have been set firmly on course by activists, thinkers and feminists, it is right and proper for us to deliberate on the course they have followed till date and the direction they need to pursue in the future. While a number of issues have been successfully tackled, a great many of them still stare us in the face. We need activism as much as we need reflection. Therefore, the need for such a Conference, where both activists intimately involved with furthering the cause, and thinkers whose enlightened vision can show the way, meet and share experiences and ideas to shape current and future strategies. I also look forward very keenly to the deliberation of this Conference and the direction it projects for the future, since, as a woman and an administrator, I am respectively both a participant and a potential propellant in this direction. Singh Principal vi Convener’s Message I am indeed delighted and privileged to be the Convener of the Two Day National Conference on ‘Women’s Quest for Equality in India-Promises, Problems and Prospects’. Women Development Cell of our College was established in the year 2003. The primary responsibility of the Cell is to operate as the redressal mechanism against sexual discrimination at college level. The Cell is playing a positive role by inculcating a sense of gender equality among the students of the college. In the last decade, the Cell has organised a number of programmes towards this objective. This Two-Day National Conference is being organised by the Cell to address issues related to women. Indian society is essentially a male-dominated society, in which the ascribed status has been low. While the Constitution provides safeguards and legal measures, women are yet to achive equal status. The Two Day Conference will raise a number of problems faced by women and find answers to some of these problems. It will also seek to address how women can overcome barriers of society and empower themselves. As a Pre-Conference activity, various inter-collegiate competitions such as Street Play, Documentary or Short Film, Powerpoint Presentation, Slogan and Poster Competitions were organised, that received good response. The winners in all these competitions will be given an opportunity to present in the upcoming National Conference. We received an overwhelming response in the form of research papers, from all over the country. Therefore, we will have parallel technical sessions in which, these papers will be presented. Along with the Technical Sessions, two Plenary Sessions, two Panel Discussions and an interaction with the Activists titled ‘Towards Equality’ will be conducted. Thus, different avenues of expression will be used to address the issues related to women. We had conducted a Cover Page Design Competition for the book of the Proceedings of the Conference. Our student, Kumuduni Kudalkar of T.Y.B.M.M.

    CHAPTER – 2 A BRIEF HISTORY OF INDIAN CINEMA Indian films are unquestionably the most –seen movies in the world. Not just talking about the billion- strong audiences in India itself, where 12 million people are said to go to the cinema every day, but of large audiences well beyond the Indian subcontinent and the Diaspora, in such unlikely places as Russia, China, the Middle East, the Far East Egypt, Turkey and Africa. People from very different cultural and social worlds have a great love for Indian popular cinema, and many have been Hindi Films fans for over fifty years. Indian cinema is world – famous for the staggering amount of films it produces: the number is constantly on the increase, and recent sources estimate that a total output of some 800 films a year are made in different cities including Madrass , Bangalore , Calcutta and Hyderabad . Of this astonishing number, those films made in Bombay, in a seamless blend of Hindi and Urdu, have the widest distribution within India and Internationally. The two sister languages are spoken in six northern states and understood by over 500 million people on the Indian sub – continent alone – reason enough for Hindi and Urdu to be chosen above the fourteen official Indian languages to become the languages of Indian Popular cinema when sound came to the Indian Silver screen in 1931 . Silent Era – The cinematographe (from where we have the name cinema) invented by the Lumiere brothers functioned better the Kinetoscope of Edison and Dickson. The Lumiere brothers who invented the cinematographe started projection of short (very short, one to two minutes long) films for the Parsian public on November 28, 1895.

    Yashwant Intl. Film Festival 2015 Yashwantrao Chavan The birth centenary of Shri Yashwantrao Chavan (1913 - 1984) was celebrated last year in a befitting manner by the Government of Maharashtra and the Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan, Mumbai. It was an acknowledgement of his stellar contribution as first Chief Minister to the making of modern Maharashtra, as a State with progressive policies and a decentralized democratic set up of administration. In November, 1962, he became the Defence Minister in the aftermath of the India-China conflict. He worked hard to restore the morale of the armed forces and to enhance his strength through modern weapons, better equipment, organisational changes and a harmonious relationship with the armed forces. The efforts paid off in the India- Pakistan conflict in 1965. Subsequently, he held the high offices of Union Home Minister, Union Finance Minister and Foreign Minister of India. In 1979, he became the Deputy Prime Minister of India. He was a freedom fighter, effective parliamentarian and an astute administrator. He was a connoisseur of fine arts, a great lover of books and an author of acknowledged literary merit. He was very fond of watching good films, plays and stage performances of folk-art.     H R I S H I K E S H I N G L E Multiplex Exhibition and the New Marathi Cinema1 In April 2015, the government of Maharashtra made it mandatory for multiplex operators and owners to screen Marathi films in the prime-time slot. The order rapidly spilled into the public domain where the Marathi film industry supported this new policy, while the Hindi film industry, concentrated in Mumbai, criticised the renewed protectionism of the state government. In the resultant war of words on social media, political parties like the Shiv Sena, which also controls the Marathi Cine-Workers Union, quickly moved to claim a political point, rekindling the issue of ‘Marathi pride’. Later the state government eased the mandatory screening principle for multiplexes. This incident points to the contestations in the realm of film exhibition, where the multiplex and its economics have assumed a centrality not just for the Hindi film industry but most significantly for the emergent new Marathi cinema. The multiplex phenomenon in India has inaugurated discussions of urbanism and globalised public culture, with film exhibition assuming a social significance. Adrian Athique and Douglas Hill underscore the primacy of the multiplex in the rapid expansion of a ‘leisure economy’ in India, ‘indicative of a wider shift towards a Western-inspired commercial society with massive JOURNAL OF THE MOVING IMAGE 30 investments being made in consumer advertising and the building of thousands of shopping malls nationwide.’2 The significance of the multiplex economy lies not only in the expansion of film viewing, it is now about consuming a ‘particular sensorial experience.’3 Film practice—the cumulative processes of filmmaking, distribution, and consumption—too has aligned to the emergence of the multiplex economy.
