  • Community No
FINAL PROPOSALS Community No. M11 - CHURCHSTOKE Introduction 1. The community of Churchstoke lies in the south-eastern corner of Montgomeryshire, in a prominent salient in the county and national boundary. That part of the community which formed the historic township of Weston Madoc, is detached from the main extent of the community, and most of the houses in that area would lie nearer to the key settlement of Montgomery. Much of the vale landscape of this community is defined by the confluence of the many streams that come together to form the Camlad river. Even so, to the south the landscape rises steeply to the Kerry Ridgeway, and to the north to one of the high points in this area, Corndon Hill. Settlement is scattered through the vale, and focuses on the key settlement of Churchstoke. However, the landscape, and distinctive mining and quarrying traditions from the past, set much of the area around Corndon Hill - including Hyssington and White Grit - apart. This dichotomy has been reflected in the warding arrangement of this community. 2. The key settlement in this community is Churchstoke which has a good range of important community services and facilities and the capacity to accommodate additional development. Hyssington, the next settlement in size in the community, is, owing to severe constraints on development, defined as a rural settlement in the Unitary Development Plan. White Grit, a dispersed village that comprises three main clusters of properties, has been defined as a small village in the Plan. The community also has a number of other rural settlements: Bacheldre, Cwm, Mellington, Old Churchstoke, Pentre (Churchstoke) and Pentrenant.

The patterns represented are Irregular fieldscape (40 areas), Regular fieldscape (12 areas), Other fieldscape (6 areas), Woodland (7 areas), Marginal land (11 areas), Water & wetland (1 area), Nucleated settlement (14 areas), Non-nucleated settlement (1 area), Extractive industry (1 area), Processing/manufacturing (3 area), Designed landscape (1 area) and Recreational (1 area). Historic Landscape aspect areas were identified using a number of digital and paper data sources, verified by rapid field visiting and drawn as a digital map against a 1:10,000 OS map background attached to a database of supporting information. These digital elements and this Technical Report contain the results of the Montgomeryshire LANDMAP study and were submitted to Powys County Council and the Countryside Council for Wales on completion of the project. Montgomeryshire’s historic landscape has evolved over the course of many millennia and shows considerable variety within one of Wales’ largest historical counties.

It has lots of interesting independent shops, two breweries - including the oldest one in the country! - many good pubs and restaurants, excellent food and provision shops as well as craft, antique and book shops, a weekly livestock and general market and regular antique, flea, craft & farmers’ markets and auctions. There is a great local music scene. Only some fragments of wall remain of the castle. The imposing 18th century Town Hall, is at the top of the high street with A clock bell which rings every 15 minutes. It hosts the visitor information centre & an art gallery and is the venue for a wide variety of markets and events. The small town of Clun is the largest of the settlements along the valley from where the river rises high in the Clun Forest on the Montgomeryshire border to where it meets the River Teme at Leintwardine. The impressive Norman castle is on the bend of the river and downstream is the ancient packhorse bridge which is the only river crossing. Historically a thriving commercial centre, Clun is now a town of tradition and tranquillity, quieter and more picturesque than Bishop’s Castle, six miles away.

  • To Commemorate the 50Th Anniversary of the Opening of Offa's Dyke Path
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the opening of Offa’s Dyke Path, we asked LDWA members for their memories of this National Trail. After a first night under a bench on Prestatyn beach, I had one night bivouacing on the Clwyddian hills but after that I found nowhere to wild camp and stayed indoors, mainly in pubs, at prices ranging from £1.5s to £1.17s.6d. I remember once, maybe on the approach to Welshpool, being accosted by a farmer accusing me of trespass and not accepting the accuracy of the map. I have copied a page from my photo album: There are ponies on Hergest Ridge, Kington; my bivouac; the River Dee from PontCysyllte Aqueduct; the path along the aqueduct; and a scene along the Shropshire Union canal.

We have leisure shops, individual provision shops and businesses offering range of services unexpected in so small a town. So before heading for the nearest large out-of-town supermarket to do “shopping as usual”, try Bishop’s Castle for a more enjoyable and hassle free experience. The town offers plentiful, free car parking for those with patience to negotiate its somewhat cluttered streets and lots of pubs, cafes and restaurants for rest and refreshment and good places to buy food for picnics, barbecues or evening meals (see “Where to Eat” section and “provisions” in the Shopping and Service guide. Clun too offers a wide range of shops and services with pubs, cafes, (see “Where to Eat” section), shops, galleries, a museum and a garage. Car parks are free and ruined castle with its riverside grounds and the ancient packhorse bridge make it a picturesque small town. Look for “Shropshire Hills Buy Local - Be Sustainable” leaflets and posters, a campaign to encourage residents, businesses and visitors to use local shops and services to help sustain the area’s economy.
