The materials span from 1964 to 1991. Scope and Contents The contents of this collection document before, during, and after Salamunovich's time at the University. The collection contains many administrative correspondence and documents from the first decade of his time at LMU. This was a very busy and temoltuious time as the Music departments and Choirs at Loyola and Marymount Universities were learning how to navigate shared faculty prior to the school merger. The collection includes many announcements, programs, and posters from performances of the Men's and Women's Choruses on campus and as a traveling performance group for tours and conferences. The many letters of congratulations in the collection demonstrate how, throughout Mr. Salamunovich's time at LMU, the chorus program became well known and renowned for their sophistocation and skill. The collection also includes some materials of the preceeding Glee Club, run by William Hollenbeck, that show the work and passion that Salamunovich poured into the development of the chorus to make it locally and nationally distinguished. Biography Paul Salamunovich was a Professor of Music at Loyola University, and later Loyola Marymount University, from 1964-1990. Prior to his time at Loyola Marymount, he was a member of the music faculty at Mount St. Mary's College, and held positions at both St. Charles Borromeo Church in North Hollywood and St. Basil's Church in Los Angeles. He performed for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican and was honored as a Knight Commander within the Order of St. Gregory the Great. Paul Salamunovich is considered to be an expert in Gregorian chant. He studied under Robert Wagner at the Los Angeles Youth Chorus before serving as his Assistant Conducter of the Roger Wagner Chorale and later the Los Angeles Master Chorale. He was a master clinician, having been invited to conduct just under 1000 festivals and workshops around the world including four consecutive American Choral Directors Association national conventions. Kinderman, Co-Chair Professor James K. Bass, Co-Chair This study reexamines portamento as an important expressive resource in nineteenth and twentieth-century Western classical choral music. For more than a half-century, portamento use has been in serious decline and its absence in choral performance is arguably an impoverishment. The issue is encapsulated by John Potter, who writes, “A significant part of the early music agenda was to strip away the vulgarity, excess, and perceived incompetence associated with bizarre vocal quirks such as portamento and vibrato.     Wall of Honor American Choral Directors Association Archie Jones How does it feel to be the first president of ACDA? Archie Jones knew. Though he had much help from the other officers and members, it was Archie with his enthusiasm and organizational skills who provided the creative leadership that was so important in those early years. Theron Kirk said, “Never have I met anyone who knew and was liked by so many people all over the nation. Being with Archie for a few minutes was always refreshing and stimulating. What a wonderful quality.” Warren Angell Warren M. Angell, a charter member of ACDA, was a famous educator, conductor, arranger, composer and pianist. For thirty-seven years he served as leader of the fine arts program at Oklahoma Baptist University, developing singers who, following his lead, served their churches and their schools. He made Oklahoma a singing state, a legacy that survived the Great Depression, the dust bowl and oil busts, and he helped spread the art of fine choral music throughout schools and churches of the land. Morris Beachy Morris Beachy joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin in 1957, and over the next thirty-six years developed one of the largest university choral programs in the country, noted for its diversity and high standards. At the time of his death in 2011, James Morrow, then UTA’s Director of Choral Activities said, “Dr. Beachy was a consummate musician who set an extraordinarily high standard of choral performance and profoundly impacted choral conductors and singers not only in Texas, but throughout this country.

  • Morten Johannes Lauridsen (Born February 27, 1943) Is an American Composer
    Morten Johannes Lauridsen (born February 27, 1943) is an American composer. A National Medal of Arts recipient (2007), he was composer-in-residence of the Los Angeles Master Chorale (1994–2001) and has been a professor of composition at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music for more than 40 years. A native of the Pacific Northwest, Lauridsen worked as a Forest Service firefighter and lookout (on an isolated tower near Mt. St. Helens) and attended Whitman College before traveling south to study composition at the University of Southern California with Ingolf Dahl, Halsey Stevens, Robert Linn, and Harold Owen. He began teaching at USC in 1967 and has been on their faculty ever since. In 2006, Lauridsen was named an 'American Choral Master' by the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2007 he received the National Medal of Arts from the President in a White House ceremony, "for his composition of radiant choral works combining musical beauty, power and spiritual depth that have thrilled audiences worldwide." His works have been recorded on more than 200 CDs, five of which have received Grammy Award nominations, including O Magnum Mysterium by the Tiffany Consort, A Company of Voices by Conspirare, Sound The Bells by The Bay Brass and two all-Lauridsen discs entitled Lux Aeterna by the Los Angeles Master Chorale led by Paul Salamunovich and Polyphony with the Britten Sinfonia conducted by Stephen Layton. His principal publishers are Peermusic (New York/Hamburg) and Faber Music (London). A recipient of numerous grants, prizes, and commissions, Lauridsen chaired the Composition department at the USC Thornton School of Music from 1990–2002 and founded the School’s Advanced Studies program in Film Scoring.
