Kenn Thomas Papers (S1195) PRELIMINARY INVENTORY S1195 (SA3811, SA3812, SA4367) KENN THOMAS PAPERS This collection is available at The State Historical Society of Missouri. If you would like more information, please contact us at [email protected]. Introduction Approximately 44 cubic feet The papers of Kenn Thomas contain correspondence, business files, travel records, a collection of independently produced, small press fanzines, audio/visual recordings, and subject files documenting the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Iran-Contra scandal, and Unidentified Flying Objects. Other materials of interest include video and audio recordings of Bob Dylan and the Band, performing in St. Louis area venues. The papers date from 1970 to 2007. Kenn Thomas was born on June 12, 1958, in St. Louis City, Missouri. Thomas began his career as a freelance writer in the 1980s as a rock music critic for the St. Louis Post- Dispatch, the St. Louis Globe-Democrat and the Riverfront Times. He also produced and hosted a radio program focusing on the Beat era writers, Off The Beaten Path (later retitled Offbeat) for KDHX community-based radio. In 1988 he launched a magazine, Steamshovel Press, to publicize his unpublished music reviews and interviews with notable pop-culture icons, including Amiri Baraka and Ram Dass (Richard Alpert). Thomas’s lifelong fascination with conspiracy theories prompted him to shift the magazine’s focus in 1992 to examine conspiracy theories and their sociological dimension in popular culture. Steamshovel Press soon gained notice and wider distribution in conspiracy circles. Three back issue anthologies eventually were published: Popular Alienation (Illuminet, 1995), Popular Paranoia (Adventures Unlimited Press, 2002); and Parapolitics: Conspiracy in Contemporary America (AUP, 2006). Additionally, Thomas wrote several books on the JFK assassination, most notably Maury Island UFO: The Crisman Conspiracy, about a UFO incident in the Pacific Northwest in 1947 that involved individuals later connected to the JFK assassination. The second edition of that book, retitled JFK & UFO, was published in 2011. Thomas traveled widely in the US and Europe lecturing on these book topics and promoting the magazine. Thomas also contributed to several anthologies on conspiracy topics and wrote introductions to books by other conspiracy authors. Donor Information The papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Kenn Thomas on September 8, 2008 (Accession No. SA3811). An addition was made on September 15, 2008 by Kenn Thomas (Accession SA3812). An addition was made on September 10, 2018 by Kenn Thomas (Accession SA4367). • The Entourage Effect at Finnegans Wake 1
The Entourage Effect At Finnegans Wake 1 The Entourage Effect At Finnegans Wake The Entourage Effect At Finnegans Wake. Steven James Pratt 2 The Entourage Effect At Finnegans Wake FORE WORDS Cannabis and Finnegans Wake are two of my favourite things, and I’ve been engaging with both for over twenty years. This paper pulls from, and pushes upon my experiences, and attempts to roll-it-all-up into a practical guide-cone. Not only a theoretical series of “what ifs,” but also a helpful introduction to the book and to the flower, “seedsmanchap” (FW, 221.) with luck enhancing the experience of reading and the positive effects of cannabis. If you’re already bored, scroll to the bottom and follow some of the links. Finnegans Wake (FW) for me, serves up the perfect antidote for those who do not read much these days. FW is the book for you, today. Get stuck in, light up, lighten up, there’s no right or wrong way to speak it aloud just try and make it new, explore your accents, keep it fresh. Use it as a doorstop, just go get a copy and let it grow on you. In the post-truth era of corporate-state controlled news’ media outlets, we might all use a lil’ linguistic and semantical earthquake, to shake loose the lies and dislodge the tantalizing deceits, and to rattle the vacuous gossip columns to pieces. Finnegans Wake, mixed with cannabis is my best bet, my offering, for a universal toolkit to help break on through to the other side with enough laughs and some shrieks of joy to prevent you crying yourself to sleep in depression at the state of the planet.

Abstract Background: The aim of this study is to investigate whether the public believes high cost patients should be a lower priority for public health care than low cost patients, other things being equal, in order to maximise health gains from the health budget. Semi-structured group discussions were used to help participants reflect critically upon their own views and gain exposure to alternative views, and in this way elicit underlying values rather than unreflective preferences. Participants were given two main tasks: first, to select from among three general principles for setting health care priorities the one that comes closest to their own views; second, to allocate a limited hospital budget between two groups of imaginary patients.

  • Democratic Citizenship in the Heart of Empire Dissertation Presented In
POLITICAL ECONOMY OF AMERICAN EDUCATION: Democratic Citizenship in the Heart of Empire Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University Thomas Michael Falk B.A., M.A. Graduate Program in Education The Ohio State University Summer, 2012 Committee Members: Bryan Warnick (Chair), Phil Smith, Ann Allen Copyright by Thomas Michael Falk 2012 ABSTRACT Chief among the goals of American education is the cultivation of democratic citizens. Contrary to State catechism delivered through our schools, America was not born a democracy; rather it emerged as a republic with a distinct bias against democracy. Nonetheless we inherit a great demotic heritage. Abolition, the labor struggle, women’s suffrage, and Civil Rights, for example, struck mighty blows against the established political and economic power of the State. State political economies, whether capitalist, socialist, or communist, each express characteristics of a slave society. All feature oppression, exploitation, starvation, and destitution as constitutive elements. In order to survive in our capitalist society, the average person must sell the contents of her life in exchange for a wage. Fundamentally, I challenge the equation of State schooling with public and/or democratic education. Our schools have not historically belonged to a democratic public. Rather, they have been created, funded, and managed by an elite class wielding local, state, and federal government as its executive arms. Schools are economic institutions, serving a division of labor in the reproduction of the larger economy. Rather than the school, our workplaces are the chief educational institutions of our lives.

1 How America Lost Its Mind The nation’s current post-truth moment is the ultimate expression of mind-sets that have made America exceptional throughout its history. KURT ANDERSEN SEPTEMBER 2017 ISSUE THE ATLANTIC “You are entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts.” — Daniel Patrick Moynihan “We risk being the first people in history to have been able to make their illusions so vivid, so persuasive, so ‘realistic’ that they can live in them.” — Daniel J. Boorstin, The Image: A Guide to Pseudo-Events in America (1961) 1) WHEN DID AMERICA become untethered from reality? I first noticed our national lurch toward fantasy in 2004, after President George W. Bush’s political mastermind, Karl Rove, came up with the remarkable phrase reality-based community. People in “the reality-based community,” he told a reporter, “believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality … That’s not the way the world really works anymore.” A year later, The Colbert Report went on the air. In the first few minutes of the first episode, Stephen Colbert, playing his right-wing-populist commentator character, performed a feature called “The Word.” His first selection: truthiness. “Now, I’m sure some of the ‘word police,’ the ‘wordinistas’ over at Webster’s, are gonna say, ‘Hey, that’s not a word!’ Well, anybody who knows me knows that I’m no fan of dictionaries or reference books. They’re elitist. Constantly telling us what is or isn’t true. Or what did or didn’t happen.

First, a huge thank you to the more than two hundred and twenty five people from the radio and political worlds who graciously took time from their busy schedules to answer my questions. Some of them put up with repeated follow ups and nagging emails as I tried to develop an understanding of the business and its political implications. They allowed me to keep most things on the record, and provided me with an understanding that simply would not have been possible without their participation. When I began this project, I never imagined that I would interview anywhere near this many people, but now, almost five years later, I cannot imagine the project without the information gleaned from these invaluable interviews. I have been fortunate enough to receive fellowships from the Fox Leadership Program at the University of Pennsylvania and the Corcoran Department of History at the University of Virginia, which made it far easier to complete this dissertation. I am grateful to be a part of the Fox family, both because of the great work that the program does, but also because of the terrific people who work at Fox.

  • Comedy and the Constitution: the Legacy of Lenny Bruce
H-Law Comedy and the Constitution: The Legacy of Lenny Bruce Discussion published by Charity Adams on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 Type: Call for Papers Date: October 27, 2016 to October 28, 2016 Location: Massachusetts, United States Subject Fields: American History / Studies, Jewish History / Studies, Graduate Studies, Communication The American Studies Program and the Robert D. Farber University Archives and Special Collections Department at Brandeis University are pleased to announce a conference scheduled for October 27-28, 2016, to evaluate the legacy of comedian Lenny Bruce. His corrosive and transgressive satire as well as his boldness in pushing the envelope of the laws of obscenity have made him an iconic figure in American culture. In March 2014, the Special Collections Department at Brandeis University acquired Bruce’s papers from his daughter, Kitty Bruce, who is scheduled to attend the conference on campus. “Comedy and the Constitution” will coincide with the formal opening of this collection of archival material associated with the most influential American comedian of the post–World War II era. We invite interested participants to submit proposals for individual papers or pre-constituted panels. For each paper, email (as separate attachments) a 150-200-word abstract, along with a brief biographical note, to [email protected]. The deadline for proposals is April 11, 2016. Topics may include but need not be limited to: the nature of obscenity; aspects of Bruce’s work (LPs, nightclubs, television, autobiography); First Amendment rights; Jewish humor; Cold War culture; the transformations of the 1960s; and Bruce’s comedic predecessors, contemporaries, and descendants.
