Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Yasouj University, Yasouj, Iran (Received: 10 May 2019; Accepted: 9 October 2019) In this study, the nest-cavity characteristics of Middle Spotted and Syrian Woodpeckers as well as tree characteristics (i.e. tree diameter at breast height and hole measurements) chosen by each species were analyzed. Our results show that vertical entrance diameter, chamber vertical depth, chamber horizontal depth, area of entrance and cavity volume were significantly different between Syrian Woodpecker and Middle Spotted Woodpecker (P < 0.05). The average tree diameter at breast height and nest height between the two species was not significantly different (P > 0.05). For both species, the tree diameter at breast height and nest height did not significantly correlate. The directions of nests’ entrances were different in the two species, not showing a preferentially selected direction. These two species chose different habitats with different tree coverings, which can reduce the competition between the two species over selecting a tree for hole excavation. The Eurasian Treecreeper, Certhia familiaris, is highly special- ised in foraging on large tree trunks and can only occasionally forage outside of mature fo- rests. We quantified nest defence behaviour of Treecreeper parents toward a stuffed model of Great Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos major in central Finland. We used a Geographical Information System (GIS) to measure the landscape structure within a 200 m radius around the nest. We found that females with more fledged offspring gave alarm calls from farther away from the predator model than did females with fewer fledged off- spring. The alarming distance of females was longer when the forest patch around the nest was larger. -

Report under the Article 12 of the Birds Directive European Environment Agency Period 2008-2012 European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity Certhia familiaris Annex I No International action plan No Eurasian Treecreeper, Certhia familiaris, is a species of passerine bird in the treecreeper family found in woodland and forest ecosystems. It is a widespread breeder across much of Europe, but patchily distributed in the South-West. This species inhabits forest and woodland, generally requiring well-grown trees with many cracks and crevices in the bark for foraging, roosting and nesting. It tends to favour older stands of spruce (Picea), but habitat preferences are complex and apparently affected by presence or absence of Certhia brachydactyla (European Red List 2015). Certhia familiaris has a breeding population size of 2790000-5460000 pairs and a breeding range size of 2240000 square kilometres in the EU27. The breeding population trend in the EU27 is Stable in the short term and Stable in the long term. The EU population status of Certhia familiaris was assessed as Secure, because the species does not meet any of the IUCN Red List criteria for threatened or Near Threatened, or the criteria for Depleted or Declining (the EU27 population or range has not declined by 20% or more since 1980). The Ornithological Society of the Middle East, the Caucasus and Central Asia (OSME) The OSME Region List of Bird Taxa, Part F: Simplified OSME Region List (SORL) version 5.1 August 2019. (Aligns with ORL 5.1 July 2019) The simplified OSME list of preferred English & scientific names of all taxa recorded in the OSME region derives from the formal OSME Region List (ORL); see www.osme.org. It is not a taxonomic authority, but is intended to be a useful quick reference. It may be helpful in preparing informal checklists or writing articles on birds of the region. The taxonomic sequence & the scientific names in the SORL largely follow the International Ornithological Congress (IOC) List at www.worldbirdnames.org. We have departed from this source when new research has revealed new understanding or when we have decided that other English names are more appropriate for the OSME Region. The English names in the SORL include many informal names as denoted thus '…' in the ORL. The SORL uses subspecific names where useful; eg where diagnosable populations appear to be approaching species status or are species whose subspecies might be elevated to full species (indicated by round brackets in scientific names); for now, we remain neutral on the precise status - species or subspecies - of such taxa. Future research may amend or contradict our presentation of the SORL; such changes will be incorporated in succeeding SORL versions. 2019 Irish Seabirds & Whales Trip Report

Keogh (SWT) Shearwater Wildlife Tours Yorkshire Coast Nature Cover pic: juvenile Wilson’s Storm-petrel © Mark Pearson Day 1: Thursday 18th July The 2019 Irish Adventure started at Cork Airport where participants and tour leaders met up, hopped in a bus and headed west for wind, waves, dolphins and seabirds! West Cork is well known for its rugged coastline, featuring bays, coves and estuaries aplenty where excellent sites for waterbirds can be found around almost every bend in the road. Our first stop on the tour was Kinsale Marsh. Flocks of Icelandic Black-tailed Godwits put on a good show here along with other early returning waterbird migrants such as Shelduck, Curlew, Redshank, a few Common Sandpipers, Greenshank and a single Knot. After that it was on to Kinsale Pier where the rocky shore produced 15 Mediterranean Gulls, some Sandwich Terns, Shags, Rock Pipits and good views of Hooded Crows! We got our first look at Manx Shearwater here as a foraging flock wheeled around offshore. House Martins buzzed about before an excellent lunch was laid on. With the scenic Old Head of Kinsale just down the road we made our way over to check out the cliff nesting seabird colony there. Even though activity generally winds down at this stage of the summer, it was still a busy view across the steep cliffs where Kittiwake, Guillemot, Razorbill and Fulmar could be seen along with Black Guillemots in the water below. -

Filogenia Incluido tradicionalmente en el género Dendrocopos, un estudio de ADN mitocondrial basado en citocromo b y 12SrRNA asignó al género Leiopicus las especies medius, auriceps y mahrattensis (Winkler et al., 2014). Otro estudio, basado en intrones nucleares y un gen mitocondrial, ha corroborado que el género Dendrocopos no es monofilético y ha propuesto restringir el género Leiopicus a la especie mahrattensis e incluir en el género Dendrocoptes a las especies auriceps, medius y dorae (Fuchs y Pons, 2015). Sin embargo, el reconocimiento de Leiopicus mahrattensis hace que Dendropicos en su análisis sea parafilético y poco soportado.
