We merge databases from Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Center, Oxford-Man Institute Realized Library, NYU Volatility Lab, an d St-Louis Federal Reserve Board. We deploy three types of models throughout our experiments: (i) the Susceptible-Infective-Removed (SIR) that predicts the infections’ peak on 2020-03-27; (ii) volatility (GARCH), correlation (DCC), and risk-management (Value-at-Risk (VaR)) models that relate how bears painted Wall Street red; and, (iii) data-science trees algorithms with forward prunning, mosaic plots, and Pythagorean forests that crunch the data on confirmed, deaths, and recovered COVID-19 cases and then tie them to high-frequency data for 31 stock markets. Keywords: COVID-19; financial contagion; Johns Hopkins repository; Susceptible-Infective-Removed model; tree algorithm; data science 1. Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic hit the world economy, without anyone knowing, at light-speed, leading to partial unemployment and factories’ shutdown around the globe, leaving doctors, policymakers, businessmen, operational managers, data scientists, and citizens alike in disarray. The origin of the virus itself is not known with certainty, although most theories attach it to zoonotic transfer to the human species (Andersen et al.

Totalformue består gjerne av en disponibel investeringsformue og en fastlåst formue man beholder uavhengig risiko og forventet avkastning. Tomas Krakauskas May 2015 Vilnius EVALUATION OF PASSIVE INVESTMENT STRATEGIES IN OSLO STOCK EXCHANGE 2 Abstract Štarolis, G., Evaluation of Passive Investment Strategies in Oslo Stock Exchange [Manuscript]: bachelor thesis: Economics. Vilnius, ISM University of Management and Economics, 2015. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate and compare results of traditional passive investment strategy (market capitalization weighted portfolio) and alternative passive investment strategies (Smart Beta portfolios) in Oslo Stock Exchange in 2005-2014 period. The situation analysis showed that Oslo Stock Exchange is a safe and attractive market for investors because of Norway‘s political and economic stability and strong performance of Oslo Stock Exchange in the recent decade. Also, alternative passive investment strategies were found to outperform traditional passive investment strategy in the US market in the analyzed period. Analysis revealed supporting evidence for the hypothesis that alternative Smart Beta portfolios outperform traditional market capitalization weighted portfolios. All 7 portfolios that were formed according to various Smart Beta portfolio formation rules outperformed market capitalization weighted portfolio and Oslo Stock Exchange Benchmark Index. Smart Beta strategies showed significantly higher rates of annual returns that were from 2.2pp to 22.7pp higher than the ones of market capitalization weighted portfolio. Sharpe ratios of all Smart Beta portfolios were also found to be higher than the ones of market capitalization weighted portfolio and Oslo Stock Exchange Benchmark Index.

  • Underpricing of Initial Public Offerings
Underpricing of Initial Public Offerings - Evidence from the Oslo Stock Exchange - Master thesis Cand. Merc. Applied Economics and Finance Copenhagen Business School 2016 Hand-in: August 2016 Supervisor: Christian Rix-Nielsen Number of pages (characters): 79 (202.845) Name of authors: Cathrine Fossum Berge and Ingvild Melby Hilton Holvik Abstract In this thesis we investigate the abnormal first-day return of 88 initial public offerings in Norway from 2005 to 2015. The majority of previous studies of IPO underpricing are directed towards larger stock markets, and only a limited number of research papers have examined the phenomenon in a smaller economy such as Norway. Thus, we attempt to explain the underpricing of Norwegian IPOs by using a selection of existing theories from the vast IPO literature. We find an average market-adjusted underpricing of 2.87 percent, which is slightly lower than the underpricing observed in previous studies in Norway. However, the low estimate is in line with the trend of decreasing initial returns, and the finding is statistically significant at the 1 percent level. After controlling for firm and issue specific characteristics, as well as year- and industry effects, we find evidence in support of Hanley's (1993) partial adjustment theory. That is, it appears that Norwegian underwriters do not fully adjust the offer price to reflect information obtained in the period prior to the IPO, which can explain parts of the abnormal first-day returns. Our results contribute to the IPO literature with two implications for potential investors. First, if the return of the Oslo Børs All-Share Index is increasing in the months prior to an IPO, the investors can expect to realize a higher initial return, on average.

There is no Such Thing as Good Publicity An Empirical Study of the Link between Media Coverage and Stock Returns Master’s Thesis M.Sc. Finance and Investments & M.Sc. Applied Economics and Finance Copenhagen Business School, 15.05.2018 Characters: 200,079 Pages: 119 Supervisor: Tim Mondorf Jesper Rolfsen Kenneth Aakernes 106055 108190 __________________ ____________________ Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether there exists a return differential among stocks with low and high news and Twitter publication on S&P 500 and OSEAX. Based on the findings, this paper aims to build a simple investment strategy with the objective of challenging the return provided by the market. The media effect among stocks is analyzed using statistical tests for cross-sectional data and time series regression. The investment strategy tests for different holding periods. We find that stocks with little exposure to news and Twitter publications earn considerably higher returns than those with a high level. The effect is prominent among American value stocks and Norwegian growth stocks as well as small stocks. After a month of weak stock performance in OSEAX, the highly covered stocks continue the negative path, while stocks with low coverage tend to reverse the next month. The return difference holds even after controlling for risk factors, however with little statistical evidence. A zero-investment portfolio of Norwegian stocks sorted by media coverage adjusted for firm size earns a substantially greater return than its benchmark index, holding positions for one month at a time. Over our sample period, the monthly-rebalanced zero-investment portfolio outperforms the OSEAX by 4,424 basis points, even after adjusting for transaction costs.

By using textual analysis on annual and sustainability reports, along with other sustainability measures, we then investigate the link between profitability and various types of sustainability efforts in a Norwegian context. The study utilizes a custom crafted database of 133 companies, 504 annual reports, and 111 sustainability/ESG/CSR-reports, along with accounting data and secondary variables resulting in 639 observations and a wide range of sustainability variables spanning over 5 years. I find a positive link between sustainability efforts and profitability for the sample, and the proxy-approach proves promising. However, I am not able to determine any categorical prioritization of sustainability efforts, which gives support to the existing common practice of contextual assessments and materiality matrices when it comes to sustainability effort prioritization. The thesis struggles with data availability and the methodological question of how to filter and aggregate easily accessible sources of empirical information.

Do investors save trading for a rainy day? Abstract This paper studies the impact of weather on 31 countries stock index trading volumes, through the influence on investors attention. First, in our panel analysis we regress trading volumes on four weather variables (temperature, sky cloud cover, precipitation and snow). We find that precipitation and temperature are positively linked to trading volumes while snow has an opposite effect. And this relationship is also found to be nonlinear. We find that the trading volumes increase with low temperature and comfortable conditions whereas decrease with ad- verse weather conditions. For example, with 1 inch increase of snow leads to 2.82% decrease in trading volume of S&P 500. Second, we directly link weather effect to the measure of attention and sentiment. We find that the attention to the markets decreases with the increase of the temperature whereas weather appears has no impact on the weekly sentiment index of U.S.
