Wildflowers to grow in your garden Here is the key to the list Trees Ground covers Shrubs Eucalypts Banksias Myrtle family Banksias Others Baeckea Other Beaufortia Calothamnus Chamelaucium Hypocalymna Kunzea Melaleuca and Callistemon Scholtzia Thryptomene Verticordia Large trees. Think very carefully before you plant them! Large trees, such as lemon scented gums or spotted gums may look great in parks - at least local councils seem to think so (we would rather see local plants). But you may regret planting them in a modern small garden. That doesn't mean there is no room for trees. There are hundreds of attractive small trees that grow very well in native gardens. Here are just a few. Small trees Eucalypts with showy flowers. Eucalytpus caesia Comes in two sub species with the one known as "silver princess" being readily available in Perth. Lovely multi- stemmed weeping tree with pendulous pink flowers and silver-bell fruits. E. torquata Small upright tree with attractive pink flowers. Very drought resistant. E. ficifolia Often called the WA Flowering gum. Ranges in size from small to quite large and in flower colour from deep red to = Corymbia ficifolia orange to pale pink. In WA subject to a serious disease - called canker. Many trees succumb when about 10 or so years old, either dying or becoming very unhealthy. E. preissiana Bell fruited mallee. Small tree (or shrub) with bright yellow flowers. E. erythrocorys Illyarrie, red cap gum or helmet nut gum. Large golden flowers in February preceded by a bright red bud cap. Tree tends to be bit floppy and to need pruning. -

The pandemic has made essential self distancing and quarantining to arrest the spread of the Corona virus. As a result, most APS activities have been shelved for the time being. Being in isolation at home has been a mixed blessing. -

Proteaceae (Banksia Species)
Proteaceae (Banksia Species) Information: 90% of all Banksia species occur in South Western Australia. The two most com- mon Banksia species in the Perth region are the Firewood Banksia (Banksia menziesii) and the Slender or Candle Banksia (Banksia attenuata). These two species each flower throughout the two halves of the year and are an important source of food for countless animals. Large Banksias such as these as well as B. grandis, B. ilicifolia B. Prionotes and B. littoralis produce an abun- dance of nectar from their large flower spikes that sustain countless species and have traditionally been used as a source of food and drink by indigenous Australians. Banksias are highly adapted to a nutrient poor environment with harsh, dry climate having sunken stomata to preserve water and cluster roots to enhance nutrient uptake in Phosphorus deficient soils. The Twig-mound ant builds its nest at the base of B. ilicifolia. Some moth species larvae burrow into Banksia cones and leaves. -

Report on visit to Lyrebird Lane Quite a crowd travelled to Lyrebird Lane Little Forest, to enjoy the extensive garden of Catriona and Phil. As leaders of the Petrophile and Isopogon Study Group, they share a keen interest in domesticating these members of the Proteaceae family. Phil has spent some years perfecting a process of grafting the difficult to grow but horticulturally desirable Western Australian species onto more reliable Eastern states rootstock. From this work he has ventured to graft many difficult to grow plants within the Proteaceae family, including Banksia, Dryandra, Grevillea and Hakea species onto stocks which not only survive, but thrive in his Phil and Catriona ponder a garden conditions. (Phil has kindly supplied an extensive list difficult question during their of the successful grafts in his garden, which follows this opening comments at the last report) meeting Catriona and Phil’s property is located on the edge of the escarpment overlooking Lake Conjola and Milton at an elevation of 350m, just below the Little Forest Plateau area of the Morton National Park, about ten kilometres from the sea, and is a garden set on the rich soils of former rainforest pockets, comprising two hectares of volcanic soil known as Milton monzonite. Whilst we marvelled at the plants and the almost perfect maintenance, both Catriona and Phil were quick to point out aspects which they struggled with. First of course, as the soil retains so much moisture, many plants simply grow too quickly, then being top heavy, are affected negatively by the strong westerly winds which flow down from the nearby escarpment. -

Global climate change is altering the environmental cues that seeds receive resulting in compromised seedling emergence and changes to seedling performance. Here, we investigate how temperature and moisture affect these early stages of plant development in four Banksia species collected from a longitudinal climate gradient in southwest Western Australia. A common garden was used to examine the between-species and among-population variation in seedling emergence, growth and leaf traits under two soil temperature regimes and three levels of precipitation. We predicted that reduced moisture and increased temperature would delay and reduce total seedling emergence and negatively affect seedling performance. Furthermore, we expected that within species there would be geographically structured variation in response to the treatments. Species differed significantly in all measured traits. -
