Although activities described for betalain-containing formulations include cancer prevention and treatment, the use of extracts instead of purified pigments has avoided the investigation of the real chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic potential of these phytochemicals. Three betalain-rich extracts and six individual pure betalains were used in this work to characterize the activity and to explore possible molecular mechanisms. The animal model Caenorhabditis elegans (tumoral strain JK1466) was used to evaluate the effect of betalains as chemotherapeutics drugs. An objective evaluation method of tumor growth in C. elegans has been developed to assess the possible antitumoral activity of the different treatments. This protocol allowed a fast and reliable screening of possible antitumoral drugs. Among the betalains tested, tryptophan-betaxanthin reduced tumor size by 56.4% and prolonged the animal’s lifespan by 9.3%, indicating high effectiveness and low toxicity.

  • The Self-Perception of Chronic Physical Incapacity Among the Labouring Poor
THE SELF-PERCEPTION OF CHRONIC PHYSICAL INCAPACITY AMONG THE LABOURING POOR. PAUPER NARRATIVES AND TERRITORIAL HOSPITALS IN EARLY MODERN RURAL GERMANY. BY LOUISE MARSHA GRAY A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of London. University College, London 2001 * 1W ) 2 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the experiences of the labouring poor who were suffering from chronic physical illnesses in the early modern period. Despite the popularity of institutional history among medical historians, the experiences of the sick poor themselves have hitherto been sorely neglected. Research into the motivation of the sick poor to petition for a place in a hospital to date has stemmed from a reliance upon administrative or statistical sources, such as patient lists. An over-reliance upon such documentation omits an awareness of the 'voice of the poor', and of their experiences of the realities of living with a chronic ailment. Research focusing upon the early modern period has been largely silent with regards to the specific ways in which a prospective patient viewed a hospital, and to the point in a sick person's life in which they would apply for admission into such an institution. This thesis hopes to rectif,r such a bias. Research for this thesis has centred on surviving pauper petitions, written by and on behalf of the rural labouring poor who sought admission into two territorial hospitals in Hesse, Germany. This study will examine the establishment of these hospitals at the onset of the Reformation, and will chart their history throughout the early modern period. Bureaucratic and administrative documentation will be contrasted to the pauper petitions to gain a wider and more nuanced view of the place of these hospitals within society.

  • Adopting a New Religion: the Case of Protestantism in 16Th Century Germany
Adopting a New Religion: The Case of Protestantism in 16th Century Germany Davide Cantoni∗ University of Munich August 2011 Abstract Using a rich dataset of territories and cities of the Holy Roman Empire in the 16th century, this paper investigates the determinants of adoption and diffusion of Protestantism as a state religion. A territory’s distance to Wittenberg, the city where Martin Luther taught, is a major determinant of adoption. This finding is consistent with a theory of strategic neighbourhood interactions: in an uncertain legal context, introducing the Reformation was a risky enterprise for territorial lords, and had higher prospects of success if powerful neighbouring states committed to the new faith first. The predictions of this theory are then compared to the actual patterns of expansion of Protestantism using a panel dataset featuring the dates of introduction of the Reformation. Email: [email protected]. I thank Antonio Ciccone, Ruixue Jia, Jared Rubin, Joachim Voth, Ludger Woessmann, and three anonymous referees for helpful comments, and Regina Baar-Cantoni and Eike Wolgast for expert counseling on the history of German Reformation. Katharina Kube provided outstanding research assistance. 1 Introduction Starting with Max Weber’s (1904/05) famous inquiry on the “Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism,” religion has widely been seen by social scientists as one of the cul- tural traits most likely to influence economic outcomes. The findings about any direct effects of Protestantism on economic growth are unclear at best (Delacroix and Nielsen, 2001; Cantoni, 2010).

  • Hessen Resources at the Immigrant Genealogical Library
Hessen Resources at the Immigrant Genealogical Library Introduction The Map Guide to German Parish Registers series has one volume on the Grandduchy of Hessen (Vol. 1), with a list of available town lineage books shown on pages 16-17. Separately, two more volumes (9 & 10) are devoted to the Prussian Province of Hessen-Nassau, split between the Regierungsbezirk Wiesbaden and the Regierungsbezirk Kassel -- but only six town lineage books for the total province were named as of 2005 (see pages 18-19 and page 167). But that’s not all! Our HES section also includes the Principality of Waldeck and Pyrmont, which is included in the Westphalia II book (Vol. 40) beginning at page 503. And we have quite a few of these books from the Waldeck region, as can be seen below.
