Labour of Love A relation of the present owners acquired the entire terrace of three cottages around fifteen years ago, which were in a very derelict condition at the time. Then they worked on their complete renovation and refurbishment (dividing the terrace into just two dwellings during construction). “The cottages are about two hundred years old and are probably amongst the oldest surviving in the village.” The owners strived to retain as many of the original features as they could. “This can be seen throughout the property, the old and the new both working so well together,” they said. “It has been a total labour of love from the day we first stepped into the cottage, and we will sorely miss it as our home.”

The cottage offers three bedrooms and a family bathroom upstairs, while downstairs there are two spacious reception rooms comprising the sitting room with a wood burner, and a wonderfully light and airy open plan kitchen diner. As the initial refurbishment was so extensive, not much updating has been necessary to Lilac Cottage over the years since then, although the present owners have made a few minor improvements. New oak internal doors have been installed throughout and a substantial workshop/store built at the top of the garden, in addition to any items of general maintenance that needed attention. As the current owners said, “On first entering the cottage people say how welcoming it is - so full of charm and features throughout, but the living room has always been a firm favourite as it just has such a lovely cosy feel to it.”

Outside “The garden is of a really good size,” the owners said. “It was redone last year when we replaced all the wooden fences and decking area. And there is a very large and private terraced area for outside entertaining which is a total sun trap.” The terrace extends from the cottage to the decking area, beyond which the garden is mainly laid to lawn and enclosed by hedging. “It is so quiet in the garden all year round and you can hear bird song every day.” The shingled area to the front which is accessed through a gate provides plenty of off street parking for several vehicles.

Village Life “Whissonsett is a lovely country village, with a fantastic village feel,” the current owners said. Set in the heart of rural Norfolk, it is situated between the market towns of at approximately nine miles and at around five miles. “The coast is also only half an hour drive away,” the owners said, while schools are to be found nearby in , , and Fakenham. Whissonsett is surrounded by farmland and the village itself encircles a delightful 14th century church. “Everyone in the village is very friendly and if you’re out in the front garden they make the effort to stop and say hello, which is something you just don’t get coming from a town.”
