SAVORING THE CLASSICAL TRADITION IN DRAMA ENGAGING PRESENTATIONS BY THE SHAKESPEARE GUILD I N P R O U D COLLABORATION WIT H THE NATIONAL ARTS CLUB THE PLAYERS, NEW YORK CITY THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION SALUTING A UNIQUE INSTITUTION ♦ Monday, November 26 Founded in 1917 by the Drama League, the Drama Book Shop became an independent store in 1923. Since 2001 it has been located on West 40th Street, where it provides a variety of services to the actors, directors, producers, and other theatre professionals who work both on and off Broadway. Many of its employees THE PLAYERS are young performers, and a number of them take part in 16 Gramercy Park South events at the Shop’s lovely black-box auditorium. In 2011 Manhattan the store was recognized by a Tony Award for Excellence RECEPTION 6:30, PANEL 7:00 in the Theatre . Not surprisingly, its beneficiaries (among them Admission Free playwrights Eric Bogosian, Moises Kaufman, Lin-Manuel Reservations Requested Miranda, Lynn Nottage, and Theresa Rebeck), have responded with alarm to reports that high rents may force the Shop to relocate or close. Sharing that concern, we joined The Players and such notables as actors Jim Dale, Jeffrey Hardy, and Peter Maloney, and writer Adam Gopnik to rally support for a cultural treasure. DAKIN MATTHEWS ♦ Monday, January 28 We look forward to a special evening with DAKIN MATTHEWS, a versatile artist who is now appearing in Aaron Sorkin’s acclaimed Broadway dramatization of To Kill a Mockingbird. International Casting Directors Network Index 01 Welcome 02 About the ICDN 04 Index of Profiles 06 Profiles of Casting Directors 76 About European Film Promotion 78 Imprint 79 ICDN Membership Application form Gut instinct and hours of research “A great film can feel a lot like a fantastic dinner party. Actors mingle and clash in the best possible lighting, and conversation is fraught with wit and emotion. The director usually gets the bulk of the credit. But before he or she can play the consummate host, someone must carefully select the right guests, send out the invites, and keep track of the RSVPs”. ‘OSCARS: The Role Of Casting Director’ by Monica Corcoran Harel, The Deadline Team, December 6, 2012 Playing one of the key roles in creating that successful “dinner” is the Casting Director, but someone who is often over-looked in the recognition department. Everyone sees the actor at work, but very few people see the hours of research, the intrinsic skills, the gut instinct that the Casting Director puts into finding just the right person for just the right role. It’s a mix of routine and inspiration which brings the characters we come to love, and sometimes to hate, to the big screen. The Casting Director’s delicate work as liaison between director, actors, their agent/manager and the studio/network figures prominently in decisions which can make or break a project. It’s a job that can't garner an Oscar, but its mighty importance is always felt behind the scenes. In July 2013, the Academy of Motion Pictures of Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) created a new branch for Casting Directors, and we are thrilled that a number of members of the International Casting Directors Network are amongst the first Casting Directors invited into the Academy.

  • “Aspects of Danish Cinema”
Programme of Danish Film Screenings at the Danish Institute at Athens 2018 “Aspects of Danish Cinema”. By Ioanna Athanassatou/Film Historic at the Greek Open University & the University of Athens Screening on the 26th of April 2018 Silent heart (2014) by Bille August In film screening programme of the last 2 years, we have had the chance to see I line of Danish movies from Carl Dreyer, Lars von Trier, Susanne Bier and Thomas Vinterberg. Today we have chosen to screen “Silent heart” - in Danish ”Stille hjerte” and in Greek “Αθόρυβη καρδιά” (2014) by Bille August, the fourth movie this year. Bille August is considered the total opposite to Lars Von Trier and Vinterberg with a great international reputation. The filmography of Bille August includes two movies that both were awarded with the Golden Palms in Cannes: “Pelle the Conqueror” (1988) and “The best intentions” (1992). In these movies, including today´s, the director is closer to the cinematic perception of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman (Valoukos 2003, page 630), avoiding formalistic searching, but focusing on the mental state of his heroes. When August directed the movie in 2014, he was inspired by the Scandinavian drama of Ibsen and Strindberg, but also by the philosophic/religious meditation of Søren Kierkegaard. “Silent heart” touches upon the very complex and emotional issue of euthanasia. It was awarded at International festivals and was admitted at the European Art House. The movie is about the family gathering of three generations, coming together for the weekend inorder to say their last goodbye to Esther (Ghita Nørby) – mother and grandmother – who is sick from the incurable disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

Controversy Films was an official participant at The American Film Market in Los Angeles this month. With almost 8,000 attendees and 800 buyers, AFM is the biggest film market in the United States. We met with distributors, producers, industry insiders, actors, writers, and many friends. NOTHING IS TRUER THAN TRUTH sparked interest from several new collaborators and potential partners. On Friday afternoon, former Women in Film New York president and entertainment attorney Laverne Berry and I shared stories poolside with writer Sam Joseph and producer Byron Martin. Saturday included lunch with Controversy Films mentor and film critic James Ulmer, IMDB hero Matt Syrette and the newest member of the Ulmer Scale crew Ethan. After pitching to international distributors at the market, I went over to the AFI Film Festival in Hollywood to meet Controversy Films festival guru Vicki Oleskey and catch the premiere screening of THE PAST, from Iranian 2 of 10 12/13/13 4:34 PM SHAKESPEARE NEWS https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_previe... director Asghar Farhadi, whose previous film A SEPARATION won the 2012 Academy Award for best foreign language film. • Directed By: Josephine Decker Written By: Sarah Gubbins Starring: Elisabeth Moss, Odessa Young, Michael Stuhlbarg, Logan Lerman
SHIRLEY Directed by: Josephine Decker Written by: Sarah Gubbins Starring: Elisabeth Moss, Odessa Young, Michael Stuhlbarg, Logan Lerman Running Time: 107 Minutes CORNERSTONE FILMS CONTACTS: Publicity: Anna Bohlin/ [email protected] Marketing: Joanne Michael/ [email protected] SYNPOSIS Fred and Rose move to a small Vermont college town in pursuit of a job for Fred as an assistant professor of literature. The young couple receives an offer for free room and board from professor Stanley Hyman, as long as Rose agrees to spend time cleaning up the home and looking after his wife, acclaimed horror author Shirley Jackson. At first Fred and Rose detest the rocky household of the eccentric couple, but they eventually establish deep bonds with their counterparts, which will test the limits of their young love. Director Josephine Decker makes an exciting return with a biographical portrait brought alive with energy and imagination, based on a novel by Susan Merrill and screenplay by Sarah Gubbins. Shirley is a fresh take on the period drama, full of contemporary intrigue and dynamic in style. It features a stellar lead cast—Elisabeth Moss, Michael Stuhlbarg, Odessa Young, and Logan Lerman—who all return to the Festival to give another memorable performance. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Shirley Jackson was a wildly unorthodox human and storyteller. Encountering her work was like finding a map towards becoming the kind of artist I would like to be. Daring. Intimate. Structured yet dreamlike. Shirley’s work rides on the skin between imagined and real, seducing with its oddness and humble cracks until you can’t tell if you’re looking up the stairwell or into your own mouth.

  • A Serious Man (2009)
A Serious Man (2009) “Receive with simplicity everything that happens” --Rashi Major Credits: Directors: Joel and Ethan Coen Script: Joel and Ethan Coean Cinematography: Roger Deakins Editing: Roderick Jaynes (pseudonym for Joel and Ethan Coen) Music: Carter Burwell Cast: Michael Stuhlbarg (Larry Gopnik); Richard Kind (Uncle Arthur); Fred Melamed (Sy Abelman); Sari Lennick (Judith Gopnik); Amy Landecker (Mrs. Samsky) Background: Following the success of No Country for Old Men (2007), the Coen brothers felt free to return to an uncharacteristically personal story that they had been thinking about for many years. Set in 1967 in an upper Midwest suburbia like the one outside Minneapolis in which they were raised, A Serious Man draws upon Joel’s and Ethan’s memories as it re-tells the Biblical tale of Job. Although generally praised by critics (earning a Best Picture nomination from the Academy under its newly expanded system of selecting ten movies instead of five), the film, perhaps not surprisingly, did not generate the same buzz as their multiple Oscar-winning Western. Nevertheless, it remains one of their most skillfully crafted works, one that manages to be both painfully funny and deeply disturbing. Its reputation will almost surely grow. Cinematic Elements: 1. The Yiddish prologue, with its narrowed frame, sepia tone, and focused lighting, evokes both the style of silent movies and the vernacular language and storytelling of the Yiddish theatre. Although the Coens have explicitly denied any relevance to the modern story, the prologue clearly resonates with the themes and tone of the rest of A Serious Man. 2. Music: The Coens again collaborate with their favorite composer, Carter Burwell, and the film’s eclectic score—from the Jefferson Airplane’s “Don’t You Want Somebody to Love” to Sidor Belarsky’s melancholy Yiddish song “The Miller’s Tears”—reinforces the film’s shifts from hallucination and dream to comedy and melodrama.

We encourage everyone to vote YES in the upcoming election so you can get to the bargaining table to have a say in your future. We work in scripted television and film, including many projects produced by NBC Universal. Through our union membership we have been able to negotiate fair compensation, excellent benefits, and basic fairness at work—all of which are enshrined in our union contract.
