ANNUAL REPORT 2008 As Closely As Possible with Local Partner Organisations
The Vision: All the people of this world leading their lives autonomously in dignity and justice – free from hunger and poverty. Welthungerhilfe was founded in 1962 as the national com - mittee for the support of the United Nations' Food and Agri - cultural Organisation (FAO). Today, it is one of Germany's biggest non-governmental relief organisations. Non-profit- making, politically independent and non-denominational, the organisation is run by a Supervisory Board of honorary members under the patronage of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its work is funded by private donations and public grants. Welthungerhilfe’s goals I Welthungerhilfe campaigns worldwide for food security, rural development, and the conservation of natural resources. Our work is successful if people improve their quality of life to such an extent that they can take respon - sibility for providing for themselves – helping people to help themselves. I Together with the people of Germany and with partners from the world of politics, economics and the media, Welthunger - hilfe campaigns for a more just form of cooperation with the developing countries – so that we do not merely pay lip- service to the idea of solidarity with the poorest members of the human race. Welthungerhilfe – the start of a positive development I Its personnel stands for courage, passion and competence in fulfilling its mission. Welthungerhilfe’s work I Welthungerhilfe is a ‘one-stop’ source of aid: from rapid disaster relief, to reconstruction, and long-term develop - ment projects. In providing this aid, the organisation works ANNUAL REPORT 2008 as closely as possible with local partner organisations. -

The intention was to introduce the perspec- tives of the Catholic teaching on peace, displayed in the Ger- man bishops’ declaration of 2000 “A Just Peace” for the Ger- man context, into the political discourse and to demonstrate their political relevance. Concrete cases from Afghanistan, Congo and Bosnia and Herzegovina were treated in three forums (page 2 ff.) and served as the basis to make fundamental considerations as well as to find practical Informal talks during the approaches to a solution. Significant partners introduced their congress experiences into the German discourse and thus helped to broaden the perspectives. Rede Als Generalsekretär 2010 Habe Ich Schon Damit Bestritten

WORLD COMMERCE R EVIEW ISSN 1751-0023 VOLUME 15 ISSUE 1 ■ SPRING 2021 BENJAMIN ZEEB DISCUSSES THE LEONARD ET AL CONSIDER A NEW BRETTON WOODS LESSONS EUROPE CAN LEARN THE GEOPOLITICAL INITIATIVE IS NEEDED FOR THE 21ST FROM THE FORMATION OF THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE CENTURY, ARGUE GIOVANNI TRIA UNITED STATES EUROPEAN GREEN DEAL AND ANGELO FEDERICO ARCELLI THE GLOBAL TRADE AND FINANCE PLATFORM Foreword Strange times here is a belief today that globalisation is not working, and that despite the huge wealth creation of the last thirty years that has lifted hundreds of millions out of abject poverty, the West – acting through organisations such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization – has mismanaged the global economy. TThat may be so, and no one can deny that these institutions need reform. The question is reform to what? These very institutions (and others like the UN and WTO) represent the political elite of the West. This elite represents, to be charitable, no more than 50% of the electorate of the West and does not represent the developing world or most of the world’s population. We have a new US administration that is committed to many policies that could well reduce growth. We have the same old European Union run by autocrats, committed to these very same policies. We have China that says, on the one hand, it is for these policies, but on the other it is intent on regaining what they believe is the Middle Kingdoms rightful place at the heart of the global economy. And we have an ‘independent’ United Kingdom, run by a government that seemingly is conservative in name only, but is in favour of the corporatist leftist agenda espoused by American and European ‘democrats’, to use the term loosely. -

It is not exhaustive. The information specific to supporting women in elections was gathered through internet search and a selective review of academic literature. It has been produced as a background document for the Expert Group Meeting on “Enhancing the role of women in electoral processes in post-conflict countries” organized by the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and the Advancement of Women (OSAGI) of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Electoral Assistance Division of the Department of Political Affairs. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE NATO in A
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE NATO in a changing world – Outdated Organization or Indispensable Alliance? Date Friday 6 and Saturday 7, March 2009 Venue Beletage of the Heinrich Böll Foundation Schumannstraße 8 10117 Berlin-Mitte Conference Languages All interventions will be simultaneously translated from English into German and vice versa. Project Management and Information Marc Berthold, Head of Department, Foreign and Security Policy, [email protected] , +49-30-285 34 393 Melanie Sorge, Political Consultant/Project Manager, [email protected] , +49-30-31163485, +49-179-871 60 93 NATO in a changing world – Outdated Organization or Indispensable Alliance? At its 60th anniversary summit in April 2009, NATO plans to launch a process to develop new security strategy. On this occasion, the Heinrich Böll Foundation will host an international conference on the future of the Alliance. After the end of the cold war, is NATO an outdated organization? What role should and can the organization take on in a plural world order? NATO – Rift or Bridge toward Russia? From the war in Afghanistan to the question of expanding towards Georgia and Ukraine and its new tensions with Russia: Is NATO ready for new challenges or is it rather at the brink of collapse? After the Iraq war, is NATO again a catalyst for the revitalization of a close trans-Atlantic partnership? Russia’s President Medvedev suggested a new Eurasian security organization ranging from Vancouver to Vladivostok. Does NATO have the potential to grow from a Western defense alliance into a comprehensive security pact that includes Russia? Or will it return to its original cause: keeping Russia in check? The Plural World Order: New Challenges with an old Security Architecture? There is tenuous agreement among NATO members that military means are not sufficient to address the major challenges of the day: solving the conflict in Afghanistan, preventing a new, nuclear arms race, and coping with climate change.
