    Peter Novelli peternovelli.com Guitarist / singer / songwriter Peter Novelli is based in New Orleans. The Peter Novelli Band plays Louisiana roots and blues, a blend of blues-rock-R&B-funk with some zydeco-cajun influences. Novelli’s CD Louisiana Roots & Blues (June 12 release) with his core rhythm section Darryl White (drums, formerly w/ Tab Benoit and Chris Thomas King), Chris Chew (bass, North Mississippi Allstars), Joe Krown (B3 and piano, formerly w/ late Gatemouth Brown), and special guests Chubby Carrier (Grammy-winning zydeco accordionist), Chris Thomas King (lap slide guitar, Grammy “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou”), Shamarr Allen (trumpet) and Elaine and Lisa Foster on vocals. Novelli’s debut CD, produced by bassist David Hyde, hit the charts within a month of release and gathered widespread critical acclaim. His originals, with a few selected covers, made a journey through Louisiana-American blues-roots music. Guests include Dr. John, Paul Barrere, Augie Meyers, the late Gatemouth Brown’s rhythm section, and top Lousiana musicians. The CD includes an historical Tribute To Slim Harpo, with members of Harpo’s band including James Johnson, and interviews with Johnson, the late Raful Neal and “Big” Johnny Thomassie. Novelli started violin at age 6, picked up guitar at 14 after hearing a BB King record. The intensity, passion and raw emotional content of some of the blues masters (black and white, American and British) stuck in his ear and that is what drives him to this day. He likes to combine this feel with harmonic ideas of jazz, the relentless groove of zydeco, and just about any cool and unusual style of music or rhythm that works.

    41st Annual Natchitoches-NSU Folk Festival Celebrating Louisiana’s French Cultures Welcome to the 2020 Natchitoches-NSU Folk Festival! Like so many events throughout Louisiana, the Natchitoches- NSU Folk Festival was not able to be held this summer as a face -to-face event due to the ongoing pandemic. Pivoting to a virtual format, the festival is being held exclusively online featuring three components: crafts, music, and a silent crafts auction. Sad- ly, some elements of the festival, such as the Louisiana State Fiddle Championship, are not able to be held in a virtual format, but we look forward to their return in 2021. The virtual crafts marketplace provides opportunities for patrons to encounter the work of genuine folk artists. The crafts of these folk artisans are evidence not only that folklife is alive and well, but that the skills and talents of these artisans honed over a life- time of following tradition leads to the creation of beautiful art. And these crafts make wonderful gifts for a variety of occasions! Pictures of available crafts have been placed on Facebook, with each crafter’s contact information readily available to put buyers in direct contact with the sellers themselves. The marketplace is a public Facebook group named “2020 Natchitoches-NSU Folk Festival Crafters,” and will run through January 31, 2021. Also on sale in the marketplace is the 2020 Festival t-shirt. Designed by NSU’s Matt DeFord, the t-shirt features a fleur de lis composed of smil- ing alligators. Several crafts persons have also donated some of their favorite creations to be placed in a fully vir- tual silent auction to be held on Facebook from August 17 to September 17, 2020.

    EDITION #7B (MAY 2021) Cover design by Bob McGrath 0 CAJUN RECORDS 1946-1989 – A DISCOGRAPHY © Nick Leigh 2020 INTRODUCTION TO THE REVISED EDITIONS I began collecting blues records in 1959 but it was another 7 years before I heard Cleveland Crochet & the Sugar Bees on the Storyville anthology “Louisiana Blues”. My appetite whetted, I wanted more. Buying the Iry Le Jeune LPs on Goldband a few months later (not one but two volumes – and purchased as imports on a student’s allowance!) fuelled an appreciation of Cajun music that has remained undiminished. In the mid 1960s, however, there was little information available about the great music I was listening to, other than the catalogues I obtained from Goldband and Swallow, and the early articles by Mike Leadbitter and John Broven in “Blues Unlimited” and “Jazz Journal”. Thanks to people like Mike, John, Neil Slaven, Rob Ford and Les Fancourt there is now a lot of information available to provide the background to blues and rhythm & blues recordings. However much of the information about the post World War 2 music of South Louisiana in general and the French (Cajun) recordings in particular, remains elusive. So far as I know no single ‘discography’ of post-war Cajun record releases has been published and I thought I would try to correct this oversight. This is notwithstanding the increasing amount of well researched material about the music in general and individual artists. Therefore I take only limited credit for the information included herein about the recordings. My aim has been to bring that material together in a single document.

It preserves the traces, and is a record of, successive migrations occurring on the peripheries of the Atlantic Ocean; it bears witness to the cultural exchanges between the Caribbean (and by extension Africa), Europe and North America. Le Son des Français d’Amérique is dedicated to the heritage of music and song of the Francophone cultures of North America; it is a repository of French, Irish, Breton, Scottish, West Indian, African, mixed heritage and indigenous memories. The creators of Le Son des Français d’Amérique were clear about its importance: ‘From the moment that André [Gladu] thought of making this series of films about the various traditional Francophone cultures of north America, I realized that it had never been done before.
