n behalf the 2019 PVGC Board of Directors let me begin by wishing our membership and staff a Happy New Year! A note of gratitude is in order for our three board members who completed their service in 2018: Mark Smith, Terry Dibble and Don Pope. As President, Mark provided eminently competent leadership to the board and club management. The Smith Administration engaged largely in “nuts and bolts” analysis and planning that lays the groundwork for improvements to the golf course and building facilities in the coming years. This included physical assessments in order to ascertain the remaining lifespan and identify required maintenance associated with our building systems including roofs, plumbing, electrical/HVAC, etc. for budgeting purposes. Another major achievement was the extension of the PVGC Concession Agreement to 2038 with successive 10-year extension options thereafter. (continued on page 2) (continued from page 1) Both Don Pope and Terry Dibble “stepped up” when asked to join the board to fill vacant Director positions. Don served as Vice President while Terry Dibble ably directed the Finance Committee as Treasurer this last year. His committee did important analysis including benchmarking PVGC’s financial operations to comparable clubs and developing a greater understanding the relative contribu- tion of private party/banquet revenues to the our overall financial picture. If you happen see these gentlemen around the club please be sure to thank them for “stepping up.” Finally I want to recognize David Conforti who completed his first full year as PVGC’s General Manager. David was drinking out of the proverbial fire hose becoming familiar with the club’s various departmental operations and committing countless hours to the job. It is important to note that David made the hard decision to recruit new talent for certain key staff positions during the year. I am confident PVGC will be a much improved operation because of these decisions. Your 2019 Board of Directors and committee Chairs will be extremely busy this year with various initiatives that Iintendto begin describing with coming newsletters. We are looking forward to a productive 2019! —Braden Turnbull

Let me set the stage for you. The date was November 20 – Tuesday of Thanksgiving week, mind you. The setting was a Southern California Gas Company community and demonstration facility in Downey. Sheepishly, I had to even look up where Downey was. We were there to receive a demonstration on new combination ovens that we’re considering for the kitchen. Ovens that will efficient- ly enhance our ability to service large private events, while at the same time freeing up cooking space and personnel to better focus upon Member dining. A win for everyone. It was our job for Laura and I to be there. But also in attendance was Sam Rotondi, Simon Gilbert, and Jack Whalen. It’s these three individuals that I wish to focus upon, for theirs was the embodiment of something I’ve discussed before and will certainly do again… volunteer leadership. I think it’s all too common for us to take this service for granted. I, for one, am certainly guilty – candidly, I can get a bit verklempt when I have a message out to a Board or committee member and I don’t hear back within a few hours or same day. I understand they have their own lives and careers to lead, but darn it! I have pressing Club business to address! It’s in this spirit that I wish to acknowledge the service of our outgoing Board Members. To Don Pope and Terry Dibble for stepping in to fill voids in the Board – their dedication in stepping up when it was never their original intention deserves special recognition. And of course to Mark for his leadership as President – it requires not just the selfless commitment of time, but also the courage of conviction to make and support hard decisions in light of continual Membership feedback. On the heels of our 5-hour venture to and from Downey – after yet another example of these individuals’ selfless commitment of time on behalf of the Club – I was provided another glaring reminder of the sense of ownership and dedication by the volunteer leadership of the Club. As the new year dawns, I hope that it fills you with as much inspiration and confidence as it does for me, and it is in this spirit that I think we can all look forward to a terrific 2019. —David Conforti, PGA

Our “Jolly Holly” Holiday Mixer and luncheon was held on December 6th. Due to the heavy rainfall, we were unable to play golf in the morning. The luncheon was held in the main dining room and was decorated in festive holiday colors. The candlesticks on the tables were used as prizes and were raffled off. They were a big hit. Thank you to Joanne Moser and Nancy Roebuck for chairing this jolly event and taking care of the last minute changes. Our lunch started with a delicious squash soup followed by chicken crepes, wild rice with cranberries and baby carrots. Dessert was a chocolate mousse creation covered in chocolate ganache and was enjoyed by all.

Thank you to everyone for your toy donations for the children at Harbor Interfaith Services.

Our Red and Blue tournament will be held on February 26th and February 28th.

Happy New Year! —Linda Blethen
