2019 Board & Committee Chairs Organization Name 2019 BOARD & COMMITTEE CHAIRS BRADEN TURNBULL KEVIN LEACH AL ROEBUCK LORNA INTERIAN SAM ROTONDI Director President Vice -President Secretary Director Golf & Scholarship Board LRP Chair Liaison GREG SPIKER PAUL BARROW SIMON GILBERT CHRIS RIEGEL TRACY BARROW Director Director Director Director Treasurer/Finance Membership Chair Green Chair House Chair Communications Chair Chair n behalf the 2019 PVGC Board of Directors let me begin by wishing our membership and staff a Happy New Year! A note of gratitude is in order for our three board members who completed their service in 2018: Mark Smith, Terry Dibble and Don Pope. As President, Mark provided eminently competent leadership to the board and club management. The Smith Administration engaged largely in “nuts and bolts” analysis and planning that lays the groundwork for improvements to the golf course and building facilities in the coming years. This included physical assessments in order to ascertain the remaining lifespan and identify required maintenance associated with our building systems including roofs, plumbing, electrical/HVAC, etc. for budgeting purposes. Another major achievement was the extension of the PVGC Concession Agreement to 2038 with successive 10-year extension options thereafter. (continued on page 2) (continued from page 1) Both Don Pope and Terry Dibble “stepped up” when asked to join the board to fill vacant Director positions. Don served as Vice President while Terry Dibble ably directed the Finance Committee as Treasurer this last year. His committee did important analysis including benchmarking PVGC’s financial operations to comparable clubs and developing a greater understanding the relative contribu- tion of private party/banquet revenues to the our overall financial picture. If you happen see these gentlemen around the club please be sure to thank them for “stepping up.” Finally I want to recognize David Conforti who completed his first full year as PVGC’s General Manager. David was drinking out of the proverbial fire hose becoming familiar with the club’s various departmental operations and committing countless hours to the job. It is important to note that David made the hard decision to recruit new talent for certain key staff positions during the year. I am confident PVGC will be a much improved operation because of these decisions. Your 2019 Board of Directors and committee Chairs will be extremely busy this year with various initiatives that I intend to begin describing with coming newsletters. We are looking forward to a productive 2019! —Braden Turnbull Let me set the stage for you. The date was November 20 – Tuesday of Thanksgiving week, mind you. The setting was a Southern California Gas Company community and demonstration facility in Downey. Sheepishly, I had to even look up where Downey was. We were there to receive a demonstration on new combination ovens that we’re considering for the kitchen. Ovens that will efficient- ly enhance our ability to service large private events, while at the same time freeing up cooking space and personnel to better focus upon Member dining. A win for everyone. It was our job for Laura and I to be there. But also in attendance was Sam Rotondi, Simon Gilbert, and Jack Whalen. It’s these three individuals that I wish to focus upon, for theirs was the embodiment of something I’ve discussed before and will certainly do again… volunteer leadership. I think it’s all too common for us to take this service for granted. I, for one, am certainly guilty – candidly, I can get a bit verklempt when I have a message out to a Board or committee member and I don’t hear back within a few hours or same day. I understand they have their own lives and careers to lead, but darn it! I have pressing Club business to address! It’s in this spirit that I wish to acknowledge the service of our outgoing Board Members. To Don Pope and Terry Dibble for stepping in to fill voids in the Board – their dedication in stepping up when it was never their original intention deserves special recognition. And of course to Mark for his leadership as President – it requires not just the selfless commitment of time, but also the courage of conviction to make and support hard decisions in light of continual Membership feedback. On the heels of our 5-hour venture to and from Downey – after yet another example of these individuals’ selfless commitment of time on behalf of the Club – I was provided another glaring reminder of the sense of ownership and dedication by the volunteer leadership of the Club. As the new year dawns, I hope that it fills you with as much inspiration and confidence as it does for me, and it is in this spirit that I think we can all look forward to a terrific 2019. —David Conforti, PGA Our “Jolly Holly” Holiday Mixer and luncheon was held on December 6th. Due to the heavy rainfall, we were unable to play golf in the morning. The luncheon was held in the main dining room and was decorated in festive holiday colors. The candlesticks on the tables were used as prizes and were raffled off. They were a big hit. Thank you to Joanne Moser and Nancy Roebuck for chairing this jolly event and taking care of the last minute changes. Our lunch started with a delicious squash soup followed by chicken crepes, wild rice with cranberries and baby carrots. Dessert was a chocolate mousse creation covered in chocolate ganache and was enjoyed by all. Thank you to everyone for your toy donations for the children at Harbor Interfaith Services. Our Red and Blue tournament will be held on February 26th and February 28th. Awards Pile Up For Kinhult's Sneaky Good Freshman Season By Julie Williams Amateurgolf.com May 19, 2019 FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Frida Kinhult is a lurker, literally and figuratively. Nothing brings her greater delight than sneaking up on a teammate, a coach or a family member and popping out from behind a corner for a good scare. She always remembers to keep her iPhone camera on so she can show you exactly how high you jumped. The symbolism is obvious here, as Kinhult, a Florida State freshman, sits eight shots off the lead after two rounds at the NCAA Women’s Championship. She followed up an opening 4-over 77 at Blessings Golf Club with an even-par 73. It’s good but not great, considering the difficulty of this Blessings layout. “A small mistake is a big mistake on this course,” Kinhult said after the second round. This week aside, Kinhult’s freshman season is a body of work that sometimes gets overlooked. In nine starts so far this season, Kinhult’s worst finish was a 13th at NCAA Regionals. She fired a final-round 68 to claw that high. Kinhult stacks up well against the giants. She is 5-0 against reigning national champion Jennifer Kupcho, a Wake Forest senior who won the Augusta National Women’s Amateur last month. Kinhult was playing the ANA Inspiration, an LPGA major, on a sponsor exemption that week. Kupcho and Kinhult were named co-ACC Players of the Year earlier this month. Kinhult was also the ACC’s top freshman. She’s only the fifth player to sweep those awards, and the other four have been from Duke.

2019 PING JUNIOR SOLHEIM CUP EUROPEAN HANDBOOK 10TH – 11TH SEPTEMBER 2019 GLENEAGLES, SCOTLAND WWW.SOLHEIMCUP2019.COM [email protected] PINGJUNIORSOLHEIMCUPTEAMEUROPE INTRODUCTION TO THE EVENT The 2019 Solheim Cup and PING Junior Solheim Cup will take place at Gleneagles in Perthshire, Scotland the week of 9th September. The aim of the competition is to give junior golfers from both sides of the Atlantic the opportunity to gain international match play experience as well as the chance to meet, learn and be inspired by the professional players playing in The Solheim Cup. It will be the third time both The Solheim Cup and the PING Junior Solheim Cup are incorporated within The Solheim Cup week at the same venue which significantly enhances the profile of the junior event. This follows the success of the last two matches at Golf Club St. Leon-Rot, Germany, in 2015 and Des Moines Golf & Country Club in Iowa, USA, in 2017 where the matches were combined to great effect. In 2019, the junior tournament will move in closer proximity to the senior version and will be played on the Tuesday 10th September and Wednesday 11th September. This date adjustment ensures the PING Junior Solheim Cup will get the exposure and profile it deserves as it is positioned as an important part of a week where the hosts, VisitScotland, aim to make this the most family-orientated Solheim Cup to date. The aim of The 2019 Solheim Cup is to not only highlight the stunning assets of Scotland, the Home of Golf, but also build on the legacy of the successful 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.

  • The Four Who Sent Regrets O Augusta National, Choosing Instead to Play the ANA Inspiration by John Strege Golf Digest April 2, 2019
The Four Who Sent Regrets o Augusta National, Choosing Instead To Play The ANA Inspiration By John Strege Golf Digest April 2, 2019 RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — The most coveted piece of mail in golf, postmarked Augusta, Ga., is from the Board of Governors of the Augusta National Golf Club, extending an invitation to play in its tournament, with a superfluous R.S.V.P. Why superfluous? Well, who is going to turn down an invitation to play at Augusta? It is no longer a rhetorical question, not since the club sent out invitations for the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur that begins Wednesday. Four of the best women amateurs in the world—Patty Tavatanakit, Frida Kinhult, Albane Valenzuela and Rachel Heck—sent their regrets to Augusta National, choosing instead to accept invitations to play in the LPGA’s first major of the year, the ANA Inspiration that begins on Thursday. A fifth amateur, Xin (Cindy) Kou of China, won the ANA Junior Inspiration to earn a place in the field. It was an unfortunate decision for the four and others to have to make, the result of Augusta National scheduling its tournament opposite the ANA. Suddenly, the LPGA major has to cede the spotlight, at least through Saturday, to the inaugural Augusta amateur event. “They’re two great events,” Valenzuela said. “It’s unfortunate, but I think it will be a great week for women’s golf in general. You have to see it in the positive. It’s great that women’s golf has this issue now. There will be two great winners this week.
