WE’RE all experiencing lots of new things due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and since entering lockdown again, you might be feeling even more down than you did during the first one. When things get tough, play can help you

iStock through the changes you might be experiencing. Play can also help you learn new skills to cope with the most difficult parts of the pandemic, and understand new emotions you might have. You should know that if you’re feeling different to how you felt before the pandemic, you’re not alone! A recent report from Public Health England (PHE) found that 41% of young people are feeling lonelier than they did before the COVID-19 pandemic began. Although the world around you may be getting you down, and it all feels out of your control, there’s loads of evidence to suggest that playing can really help. HOW TO COPE WITH We know you’re an expert on playing already. You’ve probably spent plenty of time thinking up stories, building forts or making up games, but did you know that you’re not just having fun while you play, you’re also learning and developing your social and emotional skills? During a big, strange global event like a pandemic, it’s really important that you don’t forget the power CHANGES of play! THE IMPORTANCE OF FOR years, we’ve known that play is a really important part of learning. In fact, Friedrich Fröbel, inventor of the ‘kindergarten’ (also known as a playgroup), PLAY! said exactly that back in the 1800s! More recently, however, we’ve begun to learn exactly

how it is that play benefits your learning. iStock A research team at Harvard University in the US called ‘Project Zero’ found that play helps you to be engaged, relaxed, and challenged – and ready to learn. During a pandemic, when you might be feeling worried, playing can help you get your thoughts in order. Dr Bo Stjerne Thomsen, Chair of Learning Through Play at The LEGO Foundation, told us about some of the other ways that play can help you during times of uncertainty. “It reduces anxiety, it helps you take control of your own situation, and helps to strengthen social relationships.” No matter how the world around you might be making you feel, playing can help you to understand those feelings, and learn skills that help you throughout your life. WAYS YOU CAN PLAY MAKE A GROWN-UPS! NOT sure what to do today? Why not try out one of these fun activities and think about how it makes you feel! CHANGE AT no cost to you, you can join The LEGO Foundation’s online course CLOUD “Coping with Changes: Social- WITH your parent, teacher or caregiver, talk Emotional Learning Through Play”, BUILD A HAPPY BOX about some of the changes you might be going and learn how you can improve your TALK about the things that made you happy through.
