Always he had known, long before he came that drizzling California night, with the gun in his hand, to the gymnasium, that his life, scaled down, of course, would be forever like the newsreel of the Widow standing, alone and in black, with her tiny son, his hand saluting as muffled drums rolled across a dazed and weeping landscape. In the movies one image dissolves into another. The dissolve itself is metaphor of change. He, now looking thirty-seven years old, managed a drive-in movie against the screen behind his high forehead. He had Movietone newsreels from his black-and-white child- hood of a plane crashing into the Empire State Building, of VE Day and Hiroshima, of Korea, the Papal Holy Year, and the wedding of Elizabeth and Philip. He knew by heart the first campaign footage of Camelot and the final Super-8mm Zapruder strip shot in grainy Technicolor in Dallas. He had images of draft cards burning up in defiant flames; inserts of dogs lunging at black bodies on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, oh yeah, hungry dogs of Alabama; of American cities burning in protest; of the Summer of Love; and of terrified Vietnamese fleeing their American saviors on the evening news. Chronology was not his style. Feeling was. Sometimes he forgot to breathe. Sometimes he remembered he would have to pay for the good times. -

Spring 2000 XL Interview With Emily Mann Alexis Greene Emily Mann was born in Boston, Massachuetts, in 1952, the youngest daughter of Arthur and Sylvia Mann. Her father was a professor of American history, first at M.I.T., then at Smith College, and finally at the University of Chicago. Her mother is a reading specialist. As a playwright, Mann has carved a reputation by writing documentary plays or what she calls "theater of testimony," beginning in 1974 with Annulla Allen: Autobiography of a Survivor, based on interviews she conducted with a woman who escaped a concentration camp. Subsequent plays include Still Life (1980), drawn from the testimonies of a Vietnam veteran and the two women in his life; Execution of Justice, commissioned by San Francisco's Eureka Theater in response to Dan White's murder, in 1978, of mayor George Moscone and city supervisor Harvey Milk; Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters* First 100 Years (1995), which Mann adapted from 'having our say,' Sarah L. Delany and A. Elizabeth Delany's experiences of being African-American; Greensboro: A Requiem (1996), based on the events surrounding the Ku Klux Klan's assault on an anti-Klan rally in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1979; and Meshugah (1999), an adaptation of a novel by Isaac Bashevis Singer. She has also adapted Strindberg's Miss Julie and Lorca's The House ofBernardaAlba, and most recently, Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard. In tandem with playwriting, Mann forged a career as a director, working at regional theaters around the country. In 1990 she was named artistic director of McCarter Theater in Princeton, New Jersey. -

A Somewhat Brief Sistory A more complete sistory (of San Francisco) can be found at h ttp://thesisters.org/index.php/sistory Pre-Sistory Late 1960's through 1970's San Francisco slowly becomes well known for it's gay community, as well as having strange counter-culture icons roaming the streets. One of these was a commune/theater troupe of gay, radical hippies called "The Cockettes". They quickly become famous for performing strange, psychedelic theater pieces involving elaborate face-paint, glitter, parody, and somewhat spiritual/political themes. Later, their founder, Hibiscus, left the group and founded "The Angels of Light" to do more spiritually oriented "free" theater, without a charge. The Castro district of San Francisco slowly becomes a mecca for gay men, and begin a culture shift that eventually leads to the election of the nation's first openly gay official - City Supervisor Harvey Milk. Meanwhile... 1974 to 1976 Fred Brungard and Kenneth Bunch start Midwest Gay Pride Conferences at the University of Iowa. At the same time, Bunch starts a traveling drag performance troupe called "The Sugar Plum Fairies". Members include Tracy Bjorgum, Susan Short (a biological female), "Lisa" (a cross-dresser), and Michael Salinas (who later became editor of The Bay Area Reporter in San Francisco). Short asks an order of Catholic nuns in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to borrow the habits of a few deceased nuns, under the (false) story of needing them for a production of "The Sound of Music." The habits are instead worn for their drag performances throughout Iowa, doing classic diva tributes and pompon routines. -
