Q&A WITH DAVE NOLAN How has your philosophy changed as the How much of a challenge is it to compete in program has grown? the BIG EAST Conference? My philosophy changes daily, I have always The Conference lost some tremendous thought that players shape the philosophy programs in the last few years however there’s of the program. As we have attracted better still great parity in this league and great players we have become a better soccer competition. Last year the No. 5 seed Butler, playing team, off the field we continue to a very good team, ended up getting hot at attract some incredible student athletes who the right time and took the Championship have a strong desire to compete for a Big East crown. The travel distances, different playing Conference Title and measure themselves environments, great coaches and depth of on the National Stage also. As a result I can good players make winning this conference demand more and push our players to get very difficult. better every day and every year. It inspires me to become a better coach. How difficult does that make it from a coaching standpoint? The big change is that in order to have an NCAA resume we have had to really load up on strong non-conference opponents, those games are played early in the year. This year we have scheduled one of the hardest non-conference schedules in the country, four of last seasons top eight NCAA seeded teams will make it a real challenge but they are games we have to take on if we wish to achieve our goals.

How difficult is it to maintain success like you’ve had over the last three years? The hardest part is the accelerated pace of recruiting. As crazy it is to believe there are players committing to college as high school freshmen and even younger. This puts the more academic schools like Georgetown at a disadvantage. In addition on the National level we also recruit against some programs with amazing facilities, which is why the improvements at Shaw Field and the opening of the Thompson Center now at least gives us a fighting chance for the very best.
