The Silence of Clarice Starling: Exploring the Female Investigator Popular American Thrillers "MA Thesis Literatuur en Cultuurkritiek, Utrecht University.” Baan Al-Othmani - 3877132 Paul Franssen en Roselinde Supheert November 2015 0 Table of Contents Chapter One: Introduction 1 Chapter Two: Analyzing the Female Detective in Thrillers 5 Chapter Three: Becoming Acquainted with Clarice Starling 11 Chapter Four: Searching for Dr. Lecter 29 Chapter Five: Conclusion 48 Works Cited 53 Plagiaatverklaring 55 1 Chapter One: Introduction Thomas Harris‘s novels The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal, the former published in 1988 and the latter in 1999, are two of the most well-known thrillers in American fiction; the antagonist of these novels, Hannibal Lecter, has become one of the most notorious characters in crime fiction.1 Nonetheless, Harris did not begin his career as a writer of American thrillers. After graduating in 1964, Harris worked as a crime reporter for a local newspaper and he also worked as an international crime reporter in Mexico (―Thomas Harris‖); the vivid descriptions of crimes in his novels are likely based on crimes in real life. Moreover, Harris‘s first novel, Black Sunday, was a best-seller, though it did not revolve around a specific criminal; in fact, it portrays a terrorist attack. The success of Black Sunday ensured the publication of his second novel in 1981, namely Red Dragon. In Red Dragon, veteran FBI officer Will Graham is ordered by his superior to cooperate with a criminal, who he has arrested before, namely Dr. Lecter. Together, they seek to find a serial killer called the Tooth Fairy.

  • 228 Hannibal, Seasons
The Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies 16 (Autumn 2017) Hannibal, Seasons 1-3 (NBC, 2012-15) The TV series Hannibal was developed by Bryan Fuller and aired on NBC from April 2013 to August 2015. Unfortunately, the series was cancelled after Season 3 due to falling ratings, although it is now available on DVD and Netflix (and there are rumours that the show may be resurrected in the near future).1 Hannibal focuses on the character that first made his fictional debut in Thomas Harris’s Red Dragon (1981) and went on to appear in the novels The Silence of the Lambs (1988), Hannibal (1999), and Hannibal Rising (2006). Dr Hannibal Lecter then attained even wider fame via the novels’ five cinematic adaptations. Lecter (played here by Mads Mikkelsen) is a brilliant, elegant, and refined psychiatrist and an exceptional cook, with a gorgeous office and a polished, almost sterile house in Baltimore. The series functions as a prequel to the books and four of the films: Hannibal collaborates with the FBI in order to help capture serial killers, but he is himself a manipulative and sadistic murderer who cannibalises his victims’ organs. Hannibal is therefore a therapist who can dissect not only the minds of his patients and adversaries, but also the tissues of their very bodies.2 Each of the titles of almost every episode is the name of a dish, such as ‘Amuse Bouche’, ‘Mukozuke’, and ‘Antipasto’ (respectively in French, Japanese, and Italian). During the first two seasons, each episode largely consists of an investigation into the murders committed by a specific killer, although there are also a number of overarching storylines that span each season and portray the evolving relationships between the main characters.

In the film, Will Graham is married to a woman who he has a child with, thereby erasing the important distinction between having a child with someone he's in love with and finding someone to love with a child so that he can forget his past. She then offers him her breast, and they become lovers. Accept All Cookies. In the novel Red Dragon , protagonist Will Graham says that Lecter tortured animals as a child; later novels retcon this, showing Lecter to have an affinity toward animals and despise the thought of torturing them. A SHIFT IN GENDER REPRESENTATIONS AND NARRATIVES IN SUPER BOWL COMMERCIALS by ASHLEY ROCKWELL Under the Direction of Daniel L. Carlson, PhD ABSTRACT Despite the wide, diverse, and captive Super Bowl television audience, there are only a few studies—none longitudinal—that have examined gender representations in Super Bowl commercials. Scholars have demonstrated that advertisements influence our behaviors and attitudes and can reinforce and reflect dominant ideologies (Garst and Bodenhausen 1997; Kilbourne 1999; Smeesters and Mandel 2006). This study examines how the gender narratives and representations in 665 Super Bowl advertisements that aired between 2005 and 2016 changed over time. Based on this content analysis, gender representations and narratives of Super Bowl commercials shifted to become more egalitarian. While there was a general trajectory toward more gender-egalitarian messaging, there were periods of more gender-traditional messaging along the way that followed shifts in the United States economy, with masculinity crisis and correction themes prevalent in the advertisements that aired during the economic downturn.

  • Hannibal Rising Directed by Peter Webber Starring: Gaspard Ulliel Li Gong Rhys Ifans Rated “R”
New installment in Lecter cycle adds nothing new Hannibal Rising Directed by Peter Webber Starring: Gaspard Ulliel Li Gong Rhys Ifans Rated “R” n the recently-released gorefest Hannibal Rising, viewers get a look into the terrifying childhood of future cannibal Hannibal Lecter (Gaspard Ul- liel, in his English-language film debut), made famous as an adult by Anthony Hopkins inSilence of the Lambs, Red Dragon and Hannibal. Like the other three films,Hannibal Rising is adapted from one of the tetralogy of novels by Thomas Harris, but it is the first “prequel” in the series. I The movie begins when young Hannibal and his family flee from their house in Lithuania during world war two. The family goes to a cottage farther off the main roads. Before the family can even settle in, they are disturbed by a Russian tank. The tank merely needs water, but in the meantime, Nazi planes begin to fly overhead, pummeling the ground with as many rounds as they can muster. The only ones spared are Hannibal and his baby sister Mischa. Nazis soon discover Hannibal and his sister. When the men find there is nothing to eat in the cottage, the cannibalistic foreshadowing begins. The men turn on the children in a predictable move. Mischa is the “meatier” of the two, so the men choose to eat her. Eventually Hannibal’s tortur- ers flee when the house is hit with a bomb. An approaching army shortly rescues Hannibal. The movie fast-forwards eight years when Hannibal is in an orphanage for boys. Conveniently, the orphanage is set up in the original Lecter house.

1 “Not Just Another Serial Killer Show: Hannibal, Complexity, and the Televisual Palimpsest” Stacey Abbott University of Roehampton Department of Media Culture and Language, Southlands College, Roehampton Lane, London SW15 5SL [email protected] @StaceyAbbottRU Stacey Abbott is a Reader in Film and Television Studies at the University of Roehampton. She is the author of Undead Apocalypse: Vampires and Zombies in the 21st Century (2016), Celluloid Vampires (2007), Angel: TV Milestone (2009), co-author, with Lorna Jowett, of TV Horror: The Dark Side of the Small Screen (2012), and editor of The Cult TV Book (2010). She has written extensively about the horror genre on film and television and is currently writing a book on Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark. Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon (1981) introduced readers to the highly intelligent, articulate and cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter, albeit in his first outing restricted to his prison cell and serving as a reluctant consultant to the FBI profiler who captured him, Will Graham. The book was followed by three sequels in which Lecter takes an increasingly central place within the narrative: The Silence of the Lambs (1988), Hannibal (1999) and Hannibal Rising (2006). These novels have been source material for a total of five cinematic adaptations: Michael Mann’s Manhunter (1986), Jonathan Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Ridley Scott’s 2 Hannibal (2001), Brett Ratner’s Red Dragon (2002), and the prequel Peter Webber’s Hannibal Rising (2007). According to Philip Jenkins, the influence of Harris’ books in the construction of the image of the modern serial killer within popular media was “vastly enhanced by the release of the film versions,” the success of which attracted many imitators with “some novels claim[ing] to be in the tradition of The Silence of the Lambs, or to have villains in the tradition of Hannibal Lecter” (1994, 89).
