This was held at Port Arthur Lavender Farm in Port Arthur. It has been a great week meeting all sorts of growers and farmers and reminds me of the diversity of Australian Horticulture. Lavender is a romantic herb, which is loved by people all over the world. We have been collecting and breeding lavender for 25 years and have a thorough understanding of the . We have been consulting to the farmers for 20 years and have seen the ups and downs of the industry over this time. In the early days it consisted of mature couples with a redundancy or retirement package and a desire to farm lavender. The same time, they were also looking at emu farms, alpaca breeding and so-on. Over the last year or two there has been a resurgence in lavender with serious farmers coming to the nursery. People wanting to do 50 plus acres and wholesale the product or produce their own range of cosmetics etc. Interestingly for a plant with 1,000 years of commercialisation there has been virtually no targeted breeding (excluding the ornamentals) for improved yield, quality or appearance. We did some in conjunction with Charles Sturt University in 2003 and these are just now finding a place in the industry. At the conference we had a talk by Angus Stewart on breeding of Tasmanian natives for oil. He is working on plants like Kunzea ambigua and... Clive’s Comments continued… ...Melaleuca laterifolia. They are easy to grow and yield great medicinal oils that are finding a place in the worldwide essential oil market. There is a range of opportunities for local farmers to grow a diversified range of plants with profitable product range. I couldn’t help but think of the wonderful opportunity plants give us. In our other business we grow herbs and edibles and as I travel around and the world, I see so many fantastic edible plants that I just want to get into our range. The home garden market is booming with the interest in these unusual food plants. I feel my job is to find these items and bring them to the market place. I feel this is the job of all nursery folk but too many are more interested in copying others than finding their own plants. We are moving into cool climate house plants and are spending time collecting all sorts of varieties. None are going to be market killers, but they will have something a bit different and fit a spot in the house or on the patio. This is part of what we all should be doing and is also a way of keeping our industry alive and appealing. It is also exciting to see what is out there with small collectors and breeders and old-fashioned growers. Every time we sell a plant to a gardener or landscaper, we are putting another little oxygen machine in the community. The more ways we can encourage people to grow plants, the better our lives will be. In one way we are all doing our bit to fight global warming. As we travel, we should be looking for new and revisited ways of selling plants and also looking at what else is out there. The plant kingdom is huge and fascinating. Get out there and enjoy!
