Meadow View Licence No 100019797 2008 D With the exception of Neale’s Farm and a modern house on the northern side of Reads Lane, all the properties are sited on its southern side and this affords those properties with fine panoramic views to both north and south, although particularly the north, between many mature and semi-mature trees. The impressive Olde Manor has been converted into two large houses but it was originally used as a stable block to a former Manor House. Only some of the brick boundary walls which surrounded the Manor House exist today. Farther east along Reads Lane are two seventeenth Century brick dwellinghouses, Old Manor Farmhouse and Neale’s Farmhouse. From Neale’s Farmhouse, Reads Lane swings abruptly south between high hedgerows before culminating at its junction with Wing Road. All four entrance roads into the village are bordered by extensive hedgerows which tend to limit views out across the surrounding fields. Within the village the most notable views are afforded south-east from Whitchurch Road in the direction of Weedon, north from Ridings Way, Church Path and the western end of Silver Street across the adjacent fields and south from Aston Abbotts Road, immediately opposite the walled grounds to the magnificent Grade II listed Southend Farmhouse. As with a number of other large properties in the village, it’s privacy, setting and charm is enhanced by its brick boundary walls and extensively landscaped grounds. 2 Cublington Conservation Area The small village pond and adjacent grass verges around the crossroads provide an attractive setting to the core of the village. This is further enhanced by the tall hedgerow enclosure which surrounds the area and the gable end elevations to Yew Tree House and a weatherboarded barn at The Nursery. Modern housing development has taken place immediately west of the crossroads in Silver Street, Meadow Close, Cheney Close and Bell Close but this has not, on the whole, detracted from the pleasant charm and appearance of the High Street. The older properties in High Street have, for the most part, been sited close to and abutting the roadside. The enclosure thereby provided is maintained by the brick walling fronting The Old Rectory and the Grade II* Listed fifteenth Century rubblestone Church of St. Nicholas. A small pathway known as Church Path extends north off the High Street along the eastern boundary wall to the Churchyard and up to Silver Street. Between Orchard Ground Farm and The Cottage, the pathway returns south to High Street, past Cublington’s tiny Methodist Church. Enclosure in Whitchurch Road and Ridings Way tends to be in the form of hedgerow and trees. The walnut tree on the north side of Ridings Way, opposite the Grade II Listed Manor Farmhouse is particularly prominent. At the far western end of Ridings Way, down the hill past Ridings are the earthwork remains of a former Mediaeval village and castle. This site has been identified by the County Museum as being archaeologically significant. February 2008 3.
