Former NBA All-Star Kenny Anderson is in the midst of a midlife crisis, grappling with his identity and coming to terms with his past as he searches for a meaningful future.

SYNOPSIS

Reeling from his mother’s death and a subsequent DUI, NYC prodigy and retired NBA All-Star Kenny Anderson looks to discover himself in the midst of a mid-life crisis. Anderson traces past footsteps to confront haunting memories and find solace in becoming the father he never had time to be. Combining unseen footage with raw moments of reflection, “Mr. Chibbs” explores what happens when the talent fades and a sports legend searches for a meaningful future.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Jill Campbell

There were no retakes or do overs with Kenny, that’s how he rolled and that’s how I roll too. My goal as a director, producer and playwright has always been about establishing authenticity, while delving deeply into every story I am exploring in an effort to better understand our world and my place in it. When I was asked to hop on board with Mr. Chibbs, Kenny requested that the producer’s fly him to New York so we could meet. He wanted to see that we were “not a bunch of clowns.” I decided we should do some exploratory shooting and picked Kenny up from JFK with a car full of filmmaker friends and equipment. From the moment we started shooting, we all knew we had something special. Kenny and I connected on many levels: I am a lifelong New Yorker; my brother played college ball; during the season, the hum of basketball has always been on in the background in my home. I certainly knew about Kenny’s career, but when we met, I became passionate about telling his story. I immediately realized that Kenny was in the midst of a full blown mid-life crisis, and I was at the tail end of mine. I wanted to capture this journey by utilizing an observational/direct cinema approach, while incorporating archival footage from his amazing career as memories that connect us to the story we are telling in the present. This was not going to be just a highlight reel.

Kenny was also a great partner in the process of making Mr. Chibbs. As a guard, he was a gifted forward thinker, which translated to natural producer. He was always visualizing our next move. We discussed the people we would interview and places we would go. I knew I wanted Kenny included in all the interviews we did, and as filming moved forward, I realized that a “Christmas Carol” theme was evolving. As Kenny revisited people and places from his past, the experience evoked strong memories, inciting him to reflect on his life - past and present; his motivation to get his mother out of poverty, the natural talent he was gifted with, the amazing mentors who nourished this talent, the sexual abuse he silently suffered, the alcohol abuse, the women, money, kids he loved and neglected, wives, the DUI, and the regret from not giving his all in the NBA. These were not only testaments to a story as universal as the American dream, but I have never seen or met someone who was so willing to be as raw and open about their lives in an effort to give back to a society that gave so much to him. At the same time I began to witness how this was personally helping him to move forward in life. The film, became his therapy, and as he met people and places from his past, he began to understand, heal and learn more about who the man he was going to be for the rest of his life.

We followed Kenny for three years, starting with a non existent budget and an abundance of inspiration. Because of Producer/Executive Producer Barry Greenstein’s involvement, we ended with a true budget and a film we are all extremely proud of sharing.

There is a little bit of Kenny in all of us, which is why we can all relate to his story.

Jeff Parker | Composer Jeff is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer. A longtime member of the influential indie-band Tortoise, Parker is recognized as one of contemporary music’s most versatile and innovative electric guitarists and composers. With a prolific output characterized by musical ideas of angularity and logic, he works in a wide variety of mediums - from pop, rock and jazz to new music - using ideas informed by innovations and trends in both popular and experimental forms. He creates works that explore and exploit the contrary relationships between tradition and technology, improvisation and composition, and the familiar and the abstract.

His sonic palette may employ techniques from sample-based technologies, analog and digital synthesis, and conventional and extended techniques from over 35 years of playing the guitar. An integral part of what has become known as “The Modern Chicago Sound” he is also a founding member of the critically acclaimed and innovative groups Isotope 217˚ and Chicago Underground, and has been an associate member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) since 1995. A look at his work as a sideman offers a glimpse into Mr. Parker’s diversity. Parker has released several albums as a leader, all to critical acclaim, including: Like-Coping (2001), The Relatives (2004), Bright Light In Winter (2012) and The New Breed (2016).

Currently, he has been focusing on music production, small ensembles and solo performance – to cultivate and establish an idiosyncratic relationship between electronic and acoustic compositional properties in music. The coming months will see new releases from Parker in the forms of an album of solo guitar, Eno-inspired ambient duo music with famed cornetist Rob Mazurek, an album that features his long-time (and mostly undocumented) interest in hip-hop production and sample-based music (blended with orchestration and improvisation), and a new album from Tortoise.

He spent twelves years in Chicago directing theater, short films and producing original readings, workshops and full productions. ABOUT KENNY ANDERSON

Queens native Kenny "Chibbs" Anderson is a basketball legend and one of New York City’s top sports icons. After a renowned high school and college career, he played professionally for over 14 years.

Born October 9, 1970, in , New York, Anderson and his three siblings were raised by their mother, Joan, who created the famous nickname “Mr. Chibbs”. Considered one of the best collegiate basketball prospects in the country during his time at Archbishop Molloy High School, Anderson was the second player to be named All-City four times (first and only other player ever do this was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), as well as being named a McDonald's All-American, New York State Mr. Basketball by the New York State Coaches Organization, and High School Basketball Player of the Year by Gatorade. Tom Konchalski, writer and legendary high school basketball scout, once called Anderson “unequivocally, the greatest high school point guard I’ve ever seen.”

Declining offers from some of the nation’s top college teams, Anderson signed a letter of intent in November 1988 to play at Georgia Tech as a point guard. He helped lead them to the Final Four in 1990, along with swingmen Dennis Scott and Brian Oliver. The nickname for the trio was "Lethal Weapon 3". In 1991, after two years with the Yellow Jackets, Anderson entered the NBA draft and was selected by the New Jersey Nets with the second overall pick, at that point the youngest player in the league at just twenty years old. From 1991-2005, Anderson played for NBA teams across the country including the Nets, Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers, Boston Celtics, Seattle Super Sonics, Indiana Pacers, and the Los Angeles Clippers, as well as Lithuania’s Basketball Club Ž algiris. In 2008, Anderson was inducted into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame. Two years later, he was hired as the basketball coach at the David Posnack Jewish Day School in Davie, Florida. His high school coaching career was short lived, as the school refused to renew his contract following a 2013 DUI arrest. It was that same year Anderson publicly revealed details of his sexual abuse as a child. Since then, Anderson has become an advocate for young victims of sexual abuse. He also focuses much of his time on training high school basketball players at The Clinic in Tampa along with Coach Bobby Parker.

Anderson, a father of eight and a grandfather, currently resides in Pembroke Pines, Florida with his wife Natasha and children Kenny Jr. and Tiana.
