NEOLITHIC HEADED TO JERKENS BACK AT SANTA ANITA WITH SHAMAN GHOST By Michael Adolphson DUBAI WORLD CUP Trainer Jimmy Jerkens is hoping for a second chance at a first impression this weekend at Santa Anita Park with Shaman Ghost (Ghostzapper) entered in Saturday=s GI Santa Anita H. The veteran conditioner is preparing the GI Woodward S. winner for a 10-furlong, Grade I event in Arcadia for the second time in just over four months after scratching Shaman Ghost from the GI Breeders= Cup Classic in November when the bay spiked a fever in the 24 hours leading up to the race. "He's really doing well right now," Jerkens reported from Santa Anita while waiting for his GI Pegasus World Cup runner-up to arrive. "He has not missed a beat and just had a nice work in company [five furlongs in 1:00 flat at Palm Meadows Saturday]. I wasn't really tempted to run in the [G1] Dubai World Cup. Everybody does it and it seems a bit nerve-racking.@ Cont. p3

The dark bay ran a game third after setting a fast pace that day, finishing behind another impressive performance from champion and >TDN Rising Star= Arrogate (Unbridled=s Song), who is also bound for Dubai. AI think the horse performed well in the Pegasus,@ Wolf commented. A[Trainer] Todd [Pletcher] has liked the horse from the get go and when he came back as a 3-year-old turned 4-year-old, the horse seemed to be doing very well. From the standpoint of whether to go to Dubai, first of all, it was nice to be invited. Once we were invited, it was basically a decision between there and the [GI] Big >Cap [Mar. 11]. Although it is a hard sell to say that we can beat Arrogate, assuming Arrogate still goes [to Dubai], from an economic standpoint, it made more sense to take a shot over in Dubai.@

Unified (r) holds off Mind Your Biscuits in the GP Sprint | Kenny Martin

Centennial Farms' ATDN Rising Star@ Unified returned from an eight-month layoff to hold off Grade I winner Mind Your Biscuits (Posse) Feb. 25 in the GIII Gulfstream Park Sprint S., winning his fourth race from five career outings and annexing his third graded stakes. AUnified came back big,@ Jerkens said. AI think we'll go to the [GI] Carter [H. Apr. 8] with him. I really like the way he is training and think he'll have enough time between races. If they're fresh and have to run hard when they weren't ready for it, you worry about a bounce, but we had him good and prepared.@ Fellow ATDN Rising Star@ Delta Prince, a Stronach homebred and half-brother to champion Royal Delta (Empire Maker), came into Jerkens' care last year and won like a good thing in a first-level Gulfstream Park turf allowance Feb. 18. The victory was his second in a row following a Dec. 26 graduation. ADelta Prince has a lot of talent,@ Jimmy Jerkens Adam Coglianese Jerkens commented. AWe will likely go through the conditions with him and if he wins well in a two-other-than, maybe we will look for a stakes with him. He was very close to running for [previous trainer] Christophe [Clement] at the end of the Gulfstream meet last year, but something came up. We got him and he's done very well and I think he has a future. Like with all the horses, you still have to lead them over there. It's incredible how bad, good or lucky things can go all at once with a barn. You just try to stay upbeat and do what you know and keep the horses happy.@

In movies and music, we've seen what Mr. Iger predicted. Some are calling it the "Blockbuster Effect"--return on THE PEGASUS, THE BLOCKBUSTER EFFECT investment is being maximized by a very few solid brands that consumers are purchasing (or listening to or watching) over and AND THE SUPER USER over again. It's about more than just big events. It's happening everywhere and The Stronach Group is right in the thick of it. Back in 2009, Wired magazine's Chris Anderson wrote a book about something called the Along tail.@ This thesis centered on the fact that the internet allowed massive amounts of information, copious products, and other content to be created at almost no cost. Much of this content would be niche in nature, and it would suddenly find itself with a paying audience. Chris Anderson was mostly correct. If you've watched a viral video, listened to a song you haven't heard since high school, or downloaded an old obscure book, you're a part of the long tail. In the years since the book was published, though, something If you read a previous column of mine in the TDN about ABig different has occurred: People are not consuming the long tail in Event Marketing,@ you may be saying this phenomenon is anywhere near the volume that was predicted. nothing new. Dean Towers op/ed cont. Gulfstream injected a scarcity into a January horse event and in the future (if the event is staged again), I suspect we'll see higher signal fees on the entire card. The relationship between horse racing and big events in the 2000's is nothing new. With the Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs Inc. proves you can shoe-horn massive amounts of people into a venue, have them spend money, and be very good for the bottom line. But The Stronach Group is not dealing with a slice of Americana like the Derby, and they aren't trying to attract 200,000 people. What they've tried to do with the promotion (and the event itself) is to stick out in a cluttered horse racing market, while attracting a super user into a smaller venue for a compelling weekend. If they stick with it (I am not a fan of moving the event to a bigger venue, because it might turn-off the super user), I As this screenshot shows (with data from European horse believe it fits perfectly well into the new world--a world that racing), horse racing receives 20% of revenues from owners, depends on blockbusters, and those willing to pay the price. 65% from bettors and 15% from raceday itself. But with only 15% digital marketing agency. of total revenue from live events, I believe the super users are there for the taking--if there's a blockbuster for them to patronize. Enter The Stronach Group and the Pegasus World Cup. Gulfstream advertised the event with extremely high ticket prices and (despite some in the industry who were horrified at MAX HODGE, V.P. CLIENT SERVICES the price level) found a super user market perfectly willing to pay that price. Since the inaugural event was sold out, we have FASIG-TIPTON to believe there was at the very least some success achieved. In addition, because of the buzz--not unlike when Pearl Jam comes to town--casual customers who wanted something big to be a part of were leveraged; again with higher prices. The Stronach Group increased signal fees for the Pegasus World Cup itself, and yes, like with the live event super user, track and ADW partners were willing to pay that higher number.

“Though a 46% withdrawal rate is scary, actually Fasig’s 2-Year-Old sale has been much more stable since it moved to Gulfstream Park in 2015. We’re now getting used to clearance rates from the catalogue below 50% at American 2-year-old sales, and as you can see from the table, before the sale moved to Gulfstream the clearance rates were under 40%. BILL OPPENHEIM: SOUTHERN BUICK TO RIDE IN AUSTRALIA Jockey William Buick will travel to Australia this weekend and HEMISPHERE APEX next for some key rides for Godolphin trainer John O=Shea. Godolphin=s Australian arm suffered a blow last month when jockey James Doyle fractured a hand and injured a knee in a fall at Randwick on Feb. 13. Doyle, who like Buick is based in Europe and retained by Godolphin, had been riding for O=Shea this season after James McDonald, Godolphin=s former retained rider Down Under, was suspended for 18 months in December for betting on the stable=s G1 Golden Rose S. winner Astern (Aus) (Medaglia d=Oro) in the colt=s debut race. Buick has past experience riding in Australia to call on, having won the G2 Skyline S. on Souchez (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}) last February and the G3 Queen Elizabeth S. with Francis of Assisi (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) last spring, as well as the G2 Pago Pago S. on Tarquin (Aus) (Hard Spun) in 2015. Buick also rode in the 2015 G1 Golden Slipper, finishing ninth on Ottoman (Aus) Redoute=s Choice leads Australasian stallions by A Runner Index (3.46) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}). Cont. in Worldwide News p6 Arrowfield By Bill Oppenheim IN TDN AMERICA TODAY It=s been pretty hot down south so far in 2017, literally as well as figuratively. It=s been a while since we turned the APEX focus NEOLITHIC CONFIRMED FOR WORLD CUP to the Southern Hemisphere, so it seems like a good time to Neolithic (Harlan’s Holiday) will make his next start in the take a fresh look. As always, The Jockey Club Information G1 Dubai World Cup Mar. 25, Starlight Stables’ Jack Wolf confirmed Systems (TJCIS) has supplied the APEX numbers as well as other Tuesday. Click or tap here to go straight to TDN America. data; just a quick side note is that the A1st Fls@ year listed is whenever TJCIS first had registered foals reported, and for these lists we have not tried to sort out which years Northern Hemisphere-based stallions shuttled. Also the data in the ST field wouldn=t necessarily be 100% accurate, either. The Southern Hemisphere divides itself into three distinct regions: Australasia (Australia and New Zealand); South America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Peru); and South Africa. Unlike in the Northern Hemisphere, where the three Regions (North America, Europe, Japan) rate as relatively equal, in the Southern Hemisphere Australasia is considerably in front of the other two regions. This is partially because Australia is one country, and has the second biggest foal crop in the world, behind the U.S. (so Australasia is two countries, when we include New Zealand, and we think in the near future we will have APEX ratings for Hong Kong so it will be three countries), whereas South America is five countries, and South Africa is just one. There are 558 Southern Hemisphere APEX sires, of which we classify 244 as Australasian, 242 as South American, and 72 as South African. Cont. p2

Bill Oppenheim cont. Each country in South America tends to have its own profile. Scat Daddy, who rewrote the record books in Chile, did not have Southern Hemisphere 3-year-olds this season so didn=t top the charts: that honor goes to the Argentine sire Key Deputy (Deputy Minister, 4.58), who has a pretty amazing record with 2-year-olds, as evidenced by his 3.87 ABC Index for 2-year-olds. Put It Back (3.54), a son of Honour And Glory who started in VICE PRESIDENT, INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONS Gary King Florida, made his name in Brazil and now stands in Argentina, Twitter: @garykingTDN runs second on the list, followed by the Chilean-based Storm Cat [email protected] son Seeking The Dia (3.02) and the top sire in Uruguay, + 1.732.320.0975 Ecclesiastic (Pulpit, 2.77). In fact the top eight sires by A Runner International Editor Index on this list came from the U.S. Among the sires with fewer Kelsey Riley year-starters, the Peruvian-based Yazamaan (4.20), a son of Twitter: @kelseynrileyTDN Galileo from the family of Kingmambo, tops the charts, followed [email protected] by Chile=s Grand Daddy (3.92), by Scat Daddy=s sire European Editor Johannesburg and bred on the same cross as Scat Daddy, out of Emma Berry a Mr. Prospector mare; the Lanwades stallion Archipenko Twitter: @collingsberry [email protected] (3.85); and Drosselmeyer (3.13), who shuttled to Brazil and has now stayed there. Contributing Editors There are a far smaller number of sires in South Africa, which Heather Anderson Alan Carasso is after all only one country, and had 72 sires rated, of which 42 had 200+ year-starters since the beginning of the 2010-2011 Newmarket Bureau, Cafe Racing season, and 30 had fewer. Silvano (Lomitas, 2.27) and Trippi Sean Cronin (End Sweep, 2.26) are in a virtual dead-heat among South Tom Frary [email protected] African sires, followed by Dynasty (Fort Wood, 2.08) and Captain Al (Al Mufti, 1.89). Captain Al (1.46) and Trippi (1.26) Irish Correspondent are the only ones among the top 10 with a 2-year-old ABC Index Daithi Harvey above 1.00. Only six sires with fewer than 200 year-starters had Regular Columnists APEX A Runner indexes greater than 1.00, headed by Bill Oppenheim Gimmethegreenlight (More Than Ready, 1.79) and Querari Andrew Caulfield John Berry (Oasis Dream, 1.75). Kevin Blake Click here to see a list of all 558 SH APEX sires, listed Tom Peacock alphabetically within Region (1 = Australasia, 2 = South America, Send Press Releases to: 3 = South Africa). [email protected] DUBAI RACING: They ran four races on the dirt last Saturday at Send Advertisements to: Meydan. All four races were won wire-to-wire, which adds up to [email protected] one insurmountable speed bias. They=d better work on that before the end of the month. On a more promising note, consider the performance of four horses who ran at the Carnival brought from Korea by trainer Kim Young Kuan. They have made a total of nine starts at the meet, for one win, one second, two thirds, three fourths, and, last weekend, two group-race fifths. The history of smaller countries trying to compete in Dubai isn=t that encouraging, but the re-installation of dirt has enabled these Korean horses to show their level of ability. Three of them--and admittedly these are among the best horses in Korea--ran off handicap marks above 100 in their last races. Bill Oppenheim cont. A stallion who could feature prominently (doesn=t have to be first season)? The 5-year-old Triple Nine (Ecton Park) ran second off a NDW: Frankel is the one we will all be looking at this season handicap mark of 105 and recorded an RPR of 108 in a again I would say. Indeed, he had a fantastic first crop of 2-year- 10-furlong handicap on Jan. 19, then ran fourth in another olds and we are entitled to think that this same crop could have 10-furlong handicap in February, and fifth in a Group 1 last an even better 3-year-old season, as we would think that they weekend. The 4-year-old Power Blade (Menifee) ran third in a will progress and that we still haven=t seen all of them on the one-mile handicap in January; then third, beaten five lengths track yet. It will also be interesting to see how his new crop of 2- behind Furia Cruzada and Second Summer, in a 9 1/2-furlong year-olds performs. Group 2 in February, running an RPR 102 off a handicap mark of In parallel to that I am very much looking forward to seeing 100; and fifth last weekend, back at a mile. Another 4-year-old, how the first crop of Style Vendome will act on the track. The Main Stay (Tale of the Cat), ran RPR 98 when winning a further we get into the season and the more trainers I visit the six-furlong handicap off an official mark of 95 in January, then more good vibes I receive about this first crop. They all say they ran fourth off a six-pound higher mark in February. South Korea are acting like they are going to be precocious and quick with a has been a big buyer of American dirt horses and dirt sires for very good mind on them. This is something special when we the last 15 years, and on the evidence of their performance in know that he has covered some very nice mares in his first two Dubai, they are producing legitimate horses of international crops and that he is standing this season at only i5,000. Al black-type standard. That should be good for the American Shaqab has been very fortunate since the very beginning, so market. maybe they could have a European leading first-crop stallion with the first-ever stallion they have stood at Bouquetot in PROMOTIONS OF THE WEEK: Gerhard Schoening, boss of France. Hoppegarten Racetrack near Berlin, for doing a deal with NYRA to get an invitation for the winner of Hoppegarten=s G2 Diana Trial, for 3-year-old fillies, to the GI Belmont Oaks. It may only mean the Diana Trial winner will get sold, but he=s done a great job of getting his racetrack in the news. Good move all round. Ditto for the Ireland/Japan initiative announced yesterday for a slot in the G1 Irish Champion S., and we also read that last weekend=s G1 Gran Premio Latinoamericano winner Sixties Song, by none other than Galileo=s son, Sixties Icon, has won a slot in this summer=s G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot.

Positive change you would like to see for the industry in 2017? WITH NICOLAS DE WATRIGANT NDW: A positive change I would like to see in the industry is definitely attendance at the races. How to attract new crowds (especially in France) is one of the biggest challenges we are Horse you are most looking forward to seeing this season? facing now in our industry worldwide, as there are so many ways of having fun. We have to find new ways to source new NDW: Al Wukair, a son of Dream Ahead purchased at Tattersalls owners and new racing fans. Racing is about fun and tradition Book 1, with Andre Fabre.
