This article investigates some of the claims that have been made by examining the heraldry, lives, and offspring of the Roet, Swynford and Chaucer families. It will be concluded in the next issue of Foundations. Foundations (2003) 1 (2): 122-131 © Copyright FMG The Chaucer connection Katherine Swynford, nee Roet, is probably best known to students of English history as the ancestor of the Tudors via her remarkable liaison and eventual marriage to John of Gaunt2, fourth son of Edward III and Philippa of Hainault. However, since Katherine’s sister Phillipa was married to the poet Geoffrey Chaucer, she is also of interest to Chaucer-life scholars. Many of them have examined Katherine’s connection to the Swynford family and have concluded that the status of her first husband’s family raises questions about the matrimonial relationship between Phillipa and Geoffrey. The current study is an attempt to flesh-out the immediate Swynford family into which Katherine Roet married and, in the process, re-examine some of the claims of the Chaucer-life scholars. The Swynford family tree has concerned many researchers, including Bentley (1831), Harris Nicolas (1833), and Cole (1911, pp.40-86). None were able to trace an ancestry beyond Hugh Swynford’s father Thomas nor much of a descendancy beyond the occasional son or grandson of Hugh.

    Reference: Chaucer Biography Chaucer’s Difficult Lives Bruce Holsinger ([email protected]) A reference chapter for The Open Access Companion to the Canterbury Tales (September 2017) Suppose you decided to write a biography of your all-time favorite author. Let’s say she was a novelist and a poet, deceased for a number of years, with a large body of works to her credit. She was widely acclaimed, particularly in the latter half of her life, by her contemporaries, whose own writings contained subtle imitations of her style, largely without acknowledgment (though with some degree of snark). Despite the respect accorded her works, though, she was never able to make a living from her writing, and throughout her adult life until her death she held a series of day jobs that supported her lifestyle among the rich and rather more famous of her day. These jobs embraced a diverse array of vocations and allowed her to move among a variety of institutions. She was a bicycle messenger, a soldier and prisoner of war, and an ambassador; a scrap yard supervisor, a TSA inspector, and a construction boss. At one point she was even elected to the U.S. Congress, though she served only one term. There is a rumor that she might have gone to law school early on, though if she did she was expelled before receiving her degree. She liked to travel and journeyed widely as part of her various vocations, though she was born, lived, and died a New Yorker. In the wake of her death our author spawned any number of imitators, among them an angry government bureaucrat, a man of the cloth, and a disgruntled university professor.

Harris Nicholas’s assertion (1833, p.185) that Blanche (Morrieux) was the illegitimate daughter of John of Gaunt by Katherine Swynford seems at odds with the fact that she is not mentioned in later legitimation efforts (Capgrave’s Chronicle of England, p.261). The omission seems curious, but she may have died by then; she is certainly not mentioned in Gaunt’s will in 13992. However, others have suggested that Katherine and Gaunt had other children not mentioned in the legitimation papers: as late as 2002, Geoffrey Richardson all but explicitly states that not only was a supposed Swynford daughter illegitimate (whom he inexplicably names ‘Dorothy’) but the sole son, Thomas, could have been as well. Richardson cites Cole (1911, p.55) as a source, but Cole names Dorothy Swynford as Katherine and Hugh’s granddaughter, not their daughter. Both are almost certainly incorrect; the name ‘Dorothy’ was not in use until a considerably later period in England. Nevertheless, the notion that one or more of the Swynford children was illegitimate has enjoyed some popularity thanks to the letters patent attesting to Thomas’ legitimate birth, which he saw fit to request in 1411.

Cusack Introduction Julian of Norwich (c. 1342-c. 1416) was an anchoress, enclosed at St Julian’s church in Norwich in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. At the age of thirty, living at home, she became gravely ill after praying for an illness to bring her face to face with death, possibly related to survivor guilt, as she had been six in 1348 when the Black Death, the plague known in fourteenth century England as the ‘Great Mortality’, “struck Norwich and killed, it is thought, some 50,000 persons.”1 The plague recurred several times after the initial outbreak from 1347-1351, in which approximately one third of the European population died.2 In 1369 it reappeared in Norwich, killing many more. On 8 May 1373 Julian received the last rites. The curate in attendance showed her a crucifix and she had sixteen visions (‘showings’) of Jesus in the subsequent hours. She had recovered by 13 May, and shortly after wrote the Short Text of her visions.3 She then retreated to St Julian’s church in Norwich, from which place the name by which she is known was acquired. It has been speculated that her family died in the plague leaving her a childless widow; that she was a spinster in her natal home; or that she was a nun before becoming an anchoress. This project will rectify the situation by analyzing the exercise of power and influence in the nobility by comparing the wives of John of Gaunt. Additionally, the project will examine these women against the context of the hierarchal- organized nobility in late-medieval England. Instead of subsuming all nobility into an undifferentiated category of elite, this analysis will consider what effect membership in the aristocracy, royalty, and gentry respectively, had on the use of power and influence by medieval women.

    Books Worth Revisiting: Three by Anya Seton There is nothing like a really well written historical novel to sink one’s teeth into. One of the best historical novelists ever to take up pen was Anya Seton (c.1904-1990). Born in New England, she wrote a total of ten historical novels for adults, as well as three juvenile novels. After serving as a nurse in World War I, she finished her education in England, before returning to reside in her native New England. Over the years, she spent much time in Great Britain, researching the novels that she produced. In some cases, she spent as long as five years researching one novel. Two of her novels, Dragonwyck (1944) RC 68205, LB 01645, BARD download and Foxfire (1950) RC 67140 have been made into movies. Here are three more novels worth revisiting. Katherine RC 67486; BARD download. Published in 1954, Katherine is one of the finest historical novels ever written. In 2003, it was voted as one of Great Britain’s 100 best-loved novels in the British Broadcasting Company’s “The Big Read” survey. The novel is the true story of beautiful Katherine de Roet, younger daughter of a Breton herald. Raised in an English convent, Katherine comes to the court of King Edward III as a naïve and coltish teenager and meets her future brother- in-law, Geoffrey Chaucer. She also catches the attention of two men whose desire for her will seal her fate. Married off to the brutish Sir Hugh Swynford, Katherine bears her life as lady of a rundown manor by worshipping from afar her husband’s overlord, John of Gaunt, the powerful Duke of Lancaster and a younger son of the king.
