SC132480 Welcome to Craigmillar Castle Park The Edinburgh and Lothians Greenspace Trust is hosting a variety of FREE, fun and educational activities in and around the magnificent woodlands of Craigmillar Castle Park. There are events and activities for everyone, such as guided walks, children's activities, volunteer tasks and much more. For more information, please contact Ben McCallum: Email: [email protected] I Telephone: 0131 445 4025 April Foraging Tuesday 9th April 10.00am - 2.00pm Join us on a foraging walk and taste some foraged salads afterwards. Hosted by Carr Gomm and Fork in the Road. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Meet outside Castleview Primary School. A Walk In The Park Friday 12th April 2.00pm - 3.30pm Join us on a guided walk through the park, looking out for signs of spring and discovering some of the wildlife that call the park home. Please bring suitable footwear and dress for the weather. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the adventure playground in the park. Bat Walk Wednesday 24th April 8.00pm Join bat expert Graeme Wilson and discover the bats that call Craigmillar Castle Park home. Please bring a torch if you have one. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the adventure playground in the park. May Rabble Wed 22nd May 11.00am - 12.00pm Remember when you were a kid playing games in the park? Exercise wasn't a boring chore then and it shouldn't have to be now! The aim of Rabble games is to have fun and feel good. All ages and abilities are welcome. Meet at the adventure playground in the park. Herbal Workshop Friday 24th May 2.00pm - 4.00pm Floramedica will be providing a fantastic foraging workshop on the edible and medicinal plants found in the park. Booking is required as spaces are limited. To book and for more information, please contact Ben on 0131 445 4025 or email [email protected]. Under 16s should be accompanied by an adult. Tea In The Park Wed 29th May 2.00pm - 3.30pm Join us for a gentle walk in the woods followed by a hot cuppa to warm up afterwards. Please bring suitable footwear and dress for the weather. June Falconry Display Sunday 9th June 1.00pm - 3.30pm Elite Falconry’s famous display team will be bringing along a selection of birds of prey to the park. This is a special chance to see these beautiful and often elusive birds up close. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the adventure playground in the park. Little France BioBlitz Week beginning 17th June Join us for a week of fun and exciting workshops as we record the wildlife found in Little France Park with the Scottish Wildlife Trust and City of Edinburgh Council. Wilderness Survival Friday 28th June 2.00pm - 3.30pm Are you a budding young survivalist? Why not come along on our wilderness survival course and learn about water purification, den building and much more! Fun for the whole family. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.     Historic Scotland Board Meeting 26th April 2007 HSB 08/07 Appendix L - Swnmary contextuaIisation 23 ) ROWALLAN CASTLE: A SUMMARY CONTEXTUALISATION ROWAl.LAN'S DEFINING CHARACfERISTICS The defining characteristics of Rowallan castle can probably be best defined as: a tightly defined courtyard plan enclosed on three sides by ranges and on the fourth by a wall; this plan was developed over an e:xtended period, but a tower house with its associated enclosure was the probable starting point of development; an entrance emphasised by paired towers; a relatively unassuming domestic s.caleto the buildings, in which good proportions rather than lavish detailing are the principal contnDutors. It also has a number of additional points of interest, including: some high quality woodwork; some unusual structural details, including timber internal partitions. In attempting to establish a peer group for Rowallan, however, it should be understood that: a very high proportion of late medieval Scottish castles had a tower house and associated courtyard as the basis for their subsequent architectural development, and within that enclosure there would always have been ancillaty buildings; the particular distinguishing feature of Rowallan and its peers is thus the relative regularity of the buildings that grew up around the courtyard, and the sense of enclosure this created. Although the precise sequence and dating are not entirely certain, the principal component elements of Rowallan include: the footings of a tower house at the north-east comer of the courtyard
