  • Development, Evolution, and Bargaining in the National Football League
DEVELOPMENT, EVOLUTION, AND BARGAINING IN THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE Thomas Sisco The National Football League [hereinafter: NFL] is the most popular professional sports organization in the United States, but even with the current popularity and status of the NFL, ratings and the public perception of the on-field product have been on steady decline.1 Many believe this is a byproduct of the NFL being the only one of the 4 major professional sports leagues in the country without a self-controlled system for player development. Major League Baseball [hereinafter: MLB] has a prominent and successful minor league baseball system, the National Hockey League has the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League, the National Basketball Association [hereinafter: NBA] has the 22 team development league widely known as “The D- League”, but the NFL relies on the National Collegiate Athletic Association [hereinafter: NCAA] to develop young players for a career in their league. The Canadian Football League and the Arena Football League are generally inadequate in developing players for the NFL as the rules of gameplay and the field dimensions differ from those of NFL football.2 NFL Europe, a developmental league founded by Paul Tagliabue, former NFL Commissioner, has seen minor success.3 NFL Europe, existing by various names during its lifespan, operated from 1991 until it was disbanded in 2007.4 During its existence, the NFL Europe served as a suitable incubator for a 1 Darren Rovell, NFL most popular for 30th year in row, ESPN (January 26, 2014), http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/10354114/harris-poll-nfl-most-popular-mlb-2nd, .

1 2 3 The Arena Football League The Arena Football League features all the elements of outdoor football, but it is played indoors on a smaller field (50 yards x 85 feet). This results in a faster paced, higher scoring game. This season, the Arena Football League will consist of 14 teams nationwide, competing for the ArenaBowl XXVI I Championship which will be held in August. Each team plays an 18 game regular season. All teams have a roster consisting of 23 players with 8 players being allowed on the field at a time. Arena Football is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and is by far the most fan friendly, interactive game ever invented! 2014 AFL Franchise Map 4 MISSION STATEMENT The Iowa Barnstormers mission is to bring high quality, fun, affordable Arena Football to the fans throughout the great state of Iowa. • Bonner Is Master of Arena League
Los Angeles Times: Bonner is master of Arena league http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-bonner11jun11,1,2968837,print.sto... http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-bonner11jun11,1,5583206.story?coll=la-headlines-sports From the Los Angeles Times Bonner is master of Arena league After 14 seasons, Arizona Rattlers quarterback is considering retiring, but his name is unmistakable, at least when it comes to the league's postseason records. By Sam Farmer Times Staff Writer June 11, 2007 PHOENIX — Arizona Rattlers quarterback Sherdrick Bonner is the Arena Football League's equivalent of Dan Marino. In 14 seasons, the former Cal State Northridge passer has thrown for 40,979 yards and 829 touchdowns, and is among the most popular players in league history. Still, he suffers one indignity: Just about everyone fumbles the name Sherdrick. "It happened today on a conference call with ESPN," said Bonner, whose first name is pronounced Cedric, despite its spelling. "It doesn't really bother me; there are a lot worse things somebody could call me. Anyway, if people don't know it by now, there's no sense trying to correct them." That's because Bonner's last home game could be tonight, against the Avengers. After 14 seasons in the AFL, and a brief stint in the NFL, Bonner is considering calling it a career. He plans to talk things over with his wife this off-season before making a final decision. If he does step aside, it will be the end of an era, one that started with his paying $ 15 for a tryout; living through lean years when his off-season included jobs as a telemarketer, a factory worker packaging nuts and bolts, and selling Phoenix Suns tickets; and eventually becoming one of the league's elite six-figure-salary players.
