A’s News Clips, Thursday, October 13, 2011 Drumbeat: Astros Coming to AL West? Al Saracevic, San Francisco Chronicle, 10/12/2011, 12.24pm A’s fans, the Houston Astros might be coming to your town. Like it or not. As part of baseball’s grand plan to realign its divisions and form two 15-team leagues, a likely scenario would be for the Astros to move from the six-team National League Central to the four-team American League West. Talk of an Astros league change has been ongoing for months, and Peter Gammons tweeted today a decision would come in November. That would leave all six divisions with five teams, a fairer alignment that the players’ union has preferred. It would put both Texas teams in the one league — in fact, one division – and set up a bunch of games at the Coliseum between the A’s and Astros. It might not sound too exciting, considering the Astros were the majors’ worst team in 2011, losers of 106 games. Plus, in the past couple of years, they dumped many of their top players, including Hunter Pence, Lance Berkman, Michael Bourn, Roy Oswalt and Jeff Keppinger. But it’s probably the easiest scenario for baseball’s decision-makers. The Astros are being sold, and Major League Baseball virtually can force the issue on new owner Jim Crane, who’s buying the club from Drayton McLane for $680 million, with a Nov. 30 deadline. For the record, a Crane spokesperson told the Houston Chronicle there haven’t been discussions about a move to the AL.

LINE DRIVES THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 44, No. 6, Dec. 16, 2005) The President’s Message By NCBWA President Todd Lamb Holiday Greetings to everyone! Did the holidays sneak up on you this year? Somehow, I was able to find time to write this before I start my holiday shopping. Of course, don’t tell my wife. We still have a while before the season starts. Thank goodness because as I write this, Columbus is getting between two and four inches of snow. Forgive me if I have a difficult time thinking about college baseball right now. I keep trying to remind myself I’ll be traveling with our baseball team to Florida four times in February and March so my winter won’t be quite as long. By now you should have received the NCBWA Preseason All-America teams we announced Tuesday, Dec. 13. Congratulations to everyone who had a student-athlete named to one of our three teams. We released the preseason All-America teams early so SIDs have time to include them in media guide bios and media members can include the information in stories. The teams are included in this newsletter. I know I’m plugging away at our media guide this week and next before we head off to our bowl game against Notre Dame. In the near future, we’ll be sending out information about how to make nominations for the second annual NCBWA Stopper of the Year. Dave Fanucchi with USA Baseball will be heading up the award this year.

Sports Ups and downs and ups and downs By Ryan Wood Tue Jul 08, 2008, 12:06 PM EDT PLYMOUTH - By Ryan Wood Correspondent WAREHAM – The first quarter of the Wareham Gatemen’s season mimicked a classic Cape Cod riptide; they got swept into the sea, and as soon as they got back up, they got sucked right back in. The Gatemen would win a game and halt a losing streak, and then they would fall right back into a string of consecutive losses. But over the past week and a half, and after a five-game winless streak, the Gatemen rolled off three wins in a row. The riptide seemed to have subsided until the team lost, 4-2, to the Brewster Whitecaps Monday. The Gatemen entered this week with a 7-11-1 record. Sunday night, the Gatemen beat the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, 4-3. Starting pitcher Robby Broach (Tulane) earned his first win of the summer and evened his record at 1-1. With the victory, the Gatemen avenged an early season, 10-3 loss to the Sox. Aaron Baker (Oklahoma), who’s been on a recent hot streak for the Gatemen, homered and hit a two-run double to power Wareham to the win. Kipp Schutz (Indiana) added a solo home run for the Gatemen. Saturday, the Gatemen earned their third shutout victory of the season. They blanked Cotuit, 4-0, thanks in large part to the solid work of starting pitcher Brandon Workman (Texas), who took a no-hitter into the ninth inning.

Minor League Transactions: Sept. 26-Oct. 2 • The first wave of free agents entered the marketplace on Oct. 1 as 43 players elected free agency, the majority of them under Article XX(D) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. It reads in part: “Any player who has at least three years of major league service, or who qualified as a “Super Two” player . and whose contract is assigned outright to a minor league club may elect, in lieu of accepting such assignment, to become a free agent. In the event that such a player with at least three years of major league service does not elect free agency in lieu of accepting such assignment, he may elect free agency between the end of the then current major league season and the next following Oct. 15, unless such player is returned to a major league roster prior to making such election.” • The recalls in this installment are paperwork moves owing to the fact that, with the minor league season and playoffs concluded, players can no longer be sent on optional assignments.
