l afi airs . or and mi itary They all descend from John Cram Cramme ,

- who is first found near Boston at Muddy River, where his house lot was '

. He w . 1 637 8 W bounded in Jan T ent to Exeter with heelwright, and his

1 63 9 . of name is attached to the Combination of Later he was Hampton .

Family genealogists have identified him with a John Cram , born at 1 6 07 f n in . o Felli g co Durham in , son Burchard Cram , who was perhaps V on G mm m m descended from the ra s , a Ger an baronial fa ily . This theo ry

f fi sh - on o . has rested mainly a lease certain pools in co Durham , said to 1 6 34 is have been made in by John Cram , who therein mentioned as being ” o r was to about to travel to f eign parts, and who entitled his share when ” he shall have returned from over seas . A S our John Cram was o ne of a group of Lincolnshire men at Muddy

m of River and later at Exeter and Ha pton , and as the name Cram is still

I . found in Lincolnshire , questioned this presumed identification I First, found the will (of which an abstract is given above) of Thomas

1 63 8 . Crambe of , dated in and mentioning a son John Then the Bilsby transcripts showed the baptis m of this son John in 1 5 9 6/7 and his

marriage in 1 6 24 to Esther White . The Willoughby transcripts disclosed

Gram s VVheelwri hts . the a connection between these and the g Finally , in arl s thor e I transcripts of F p , the next parish to Bilsby , found the baptism of Jos eph the sonne o f John Cram e and Heas ter his wife in 1 6 32 the very son Joseph who was drowned at Exeter in New 24 June

1 648 .

Bell quotes from some Exeter record , which I cannot identify , the death “ s on 1 5 s on of this Joseph , describing him as aged years , the of John and ” Lide Cram . On the strength of this Bell and Pope credit our John

Cram with a first wife , Lydia, besides the wife Hester with whom he lived o f so many years . Luckily the death this son Joseph is also entered in * “ o ld J os e th the Norfolk County records , and there he is called p , son ” of John and Hester Cram . Thus the alleged Exeter record is proved to ’ o ur h be a mere scrivener s error , and the identification Of John Cram wit rl r the John o f Bilsby and F a s th o p e is complete . m o f He was undoubtedly the son of Thomas Cra or Crambe Bilsby, and his pedigree may be thus constructed
