This Directory is a long pending commitment to the South Asian Primate Network, which represents the Primate Specialist Group and is funded by the Primate Action Fund.

The objective of the Directory is to assist people who study or otherwise help the of South Asia to know about and find one another.

You will note just in a very casual read, that most people do not have information under their name, except for their address (and some, not even that). The reason is that they haven't supplied this information as yet.

For that reason we have deleted the terminology of "member" from the network and substituted "associate" because there may be people who are hesitant to join something.

The Directory is only as useful as the amount and currency of its information. So if you have not contributed your C.V., interests, achievements, hopes, dreams, etc. please do so.

If you have corrections which need to be made for your section could you do us a big favour and simply use the copy tool in PDF to copy your whole entry, paste it into a word file and then make your corrections, using our same format. We can then simply cut and paste it back into the directory easily and the way you want it.

For those who have not send their information and want a form, please send an email to [email protected] or [email protected] or [email protected] and we will send you a form by return mail.

If you do not have email, join the human (primate) race and get an email address. You are living in the stone-age. We are biased against cavemen and will not interact with you unless you have email.

On that friendly note, we welcome you all as South Asian Primate associates and hope we can be useful and helpful to you as you do your noble work for South Asian beautiful primates.

Best wishes,

Sally Walker, Coordinator South Asian Primate Network for the IUCN/SSC PSG in South Asia CCOONNTTEENNTTSS

Information wish to share: My Ph.D. thesis mostly concentrated on the Hoolock gibbon and many interesting behavioural informations related with the species. Unfortunately I could not manage to publish them yet. I would be interested to become a part of any activity related with the Hoolock gibbon conservation. I am at present actively involved in several EIA studies of Hydropower Projects and completed 6 such work. While dealing with these projects I have come across a lot of issues related to the habitat fragmentation or habitat merging with respect to the primate groups. I would be interested to take up some studies related to this in the Hydropower dominated areas of Uttarakhand or Arunachal Pradesh.

Reproductive biology and welfare of captive Lion-tailed macaques in Indian zoos from 2001-04. Experience / Expertise in captive maintenance / Breeding of primates: No direct experience. I have guided a student Avanti Mallapur for Ph.D., she worked on reproductive biology & welfare of captive Lion-tailed macaques. Information wish to share: My work on the behaviour ecology & conservation of the Arunachal macaque in Arunachal Pradesh and the macaque communities of Assam has only just began. I intend to ultimately work on the field biology and conservation of all the Indian macaques with an aim of understanding their comparative sociology and evolution. To be kept abreast of Indian primatology to be able to meet other primatologists, to forge research & conservation collaborations and work in a coordinated fashion to save & study South Asian Primates.

Presented a paper "PHVA processes at work for Hoolock gibbon Hoolock hoolock hoolock in Bangladesh and India" at 21st Congress of the International Primatological Society in Entebbe, Uganda from 25-30 Jun’06. Information wish to share: Since 1987 or 1988 I have been interested in South Asian Primates, first being the Lion- tailed macaque and Nilgiri langur as they were exhibited at Mysore Zoo. I helped Mr. Laurie Gledhill maintain the India portion of the LTM studbook by hunting down data in Indian zoos and checking its accuracy when possible. In 1993 we (ZOO) organized a PHVA for LTM in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. In about 1995 we (ZOO) organized a training in Population Biology and Captive Management of LTM for a batch of foresters for a week and then a batch of zoo personnel for a week. I followed up the recommendations from the PHVA with numerous reminders to the people who had to implement them. In 2002 we (ZOO), with assistance from Dr. Ardith Eudey and Sanjay Molur, organized a South Asian Primate CAMP workshop. Following that I was asked to develop the network of primatologists who responded to the CAMP into a more cohesive group and convened the South Asian Primate Network. This directory is part of the network activities. We have brought out several publications (kids packets, reports, summaries, booklets, posters, etc.) with a lot of help from PSG and other sponsors. I gave a presentation entitled the Art and Science of Primates in South Asia in the Australian zoo conference and two presentations at IPS on primate education in our region and uses of the CAMP workshop. We organized a PHVA for Hoolock gibbon and an education programme in India and Bangladesh. A series of teacher training workshop in northeast India combining Hoolock gibbon with Tigers is planned for later in this year. I hope to attend IPS this year and present on education networking for primates in South Asia and one on the Hoolock gibbon PHVA. Although I am not an academic I am glad to find ways to contribute to primate conservation at my level. I would like for all the primate biologists to sign up and send their c.v. so this directory will be a success.
