HUNTER INFORMATION SHEET DESERT BIGHORN Unit 263 LOCATION: Unit 263 is situated in southern Clark County and comprises the McCullough Range, Highland Range and Lucy Gray Mountains. ELEVATION: In the McCullough Range, elevations range from 3,280' to 7,027'. In the Highland Range and Lucy Gray Mountains, summit elevations reach 4,995' and 5,715', respectively. TERRAIN: Topography varies from rolling hills on the south end of the Highland Range to rugged, broken cliffs encountered throughout much of the unit. VEGETATION: Within the limits of sheep distribution on the McCullough Range, vegetative types include creosote bush scrub and blackbrush scrub at lower elevations and pinion- juniper woodland at higher elevations. Creosote bush scrub and blackbrush scrub is found on the Highland Range, whereas only creosote bush scrub occurs on the Lucy Gray Mountains. LAND STATUS: Lands within the unit are administered by the Bureau of Land Management. Included within the McCullough Range are two Wilderness Study Areas. HUNTER ACCESS: Due to proximity to Henderson, Boulder City, Las Vegas, Searchlight and Jean adequate access exists throughout much of the unit. Note: Please be aware that sections of this unit are in a wilderness area. Motorized equipment, mechanized transport, including wheeled game carriers and chainsaws, are prohibited in wilderness areas. Contact the Federal Management Agency responsible for this area for more information. MAP REFERENCE: Maps are available for purchase from BLM, or through private vendors such as Mercury Blueprint & Supply Co. (Las Vegas), Desert Outfitters (Las Vegas) or Oakman=s (Reno). At a minimum, hunters should possess the United States Geologic Survey, Mesquite Lake 1:100,000- scale topographic map (30 x 60 minute quadrangle). Link to Map Resources. FACILITIES AND SERVICES: Full services are available in Henderson and Las Vegas. Generally, primitive camping is the rule. RECOMMENDED HUNTING AREAS FOR BIGHORN SHEEP: In the McCullough Range, hunters tend to find bighorn sheep between McCullough Pass and Black Mountain. SPECIAL COMMENTS: Sheep hunting in the unit is physically demanding, as much of the terrain is extremely steep and rocky. Provided by Nevada Department of Wildlife .

It has occupied a criti- cal structural position in the western Cordillera since Mesozoic time. In the Cretaceous through early Tertiary, it stood just east and north of major fold and thrust belts and also marked the northern end of a broad, gently (~15o) north-plunging uplift (Kingman arch) that extended southeastward through much of central Arizona. Mesozoic and Paleozoic strata were stripped from the arch by northeast-flowing streams. Peraluminous 65 to 73 Ma granites were emplaced at depths of at least 10 km and exposed in the core of the arch by earliest Miocene time. Calc-alkaline magmatism swept northward through the northern Colorado River extensional corridor during early to middle Miocene time, beginning at ~22 Ma in the south and ~12 Ma in the north.

Nielson INTRODUCTION The East of Grotto Hills l:24,000-scale quadrangle of California lies west of the Colorado River about 30 km southwest of Searchlight, Nevada (figs. 1, 2), near the boundary between the northern and southern parts of the Basin and Range Province. The quadrangle includes the eastern margin of Lanfair Valley, the southernmost part of the Castle Mountains, and part of the northwest Piute Range. The generally north-trending Piute Range aligns with the Piute and Dead Mountains of California and the Newberry and Eldorado Mountains and McCullough Range of Nevada (fig. 1). The southern part of the Piute Range adjoins Homer Mountain (Spencer and Turner, 1985) near Civil War-era Fort Piute (fig. 2). (775) 861 6300 with funds provided through Project Agreement in cooperation with Prescott College, Prescott, Arizona SUMMARY : The typical form of the Blue Diamond cholla, Cylindropuntia multigeniculata , is now known to occur from north of Las Vegas, near Gass Peak, in the Las Vegas Range, southwest into the La Madre Mountain area, south to Blue Diamond, and then southeast into the McCullough Range. The knowledge of new localities is largely owing to efforts of Gina Glenne of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and Pat Putnam and Jed Botsford of the Bureau of Land Management. Prior to these discoveries, the Blue Diamond cholla was known to occur only at its type locality in the Blue Diamond Hills, just west of Las Vegas. Current surveys indicate that populations of C. multigeniculata conservatively occupy at least 25km² with densities averaging 23 individuals per hectare, thus the conservative estimate of number of individuals is 56,500. This estimate does not include at least one population in the Sheep Range that appear to be comprised of individuals morphologically intermediate between C. multigeniculata and C. whipplei var. whipplei . Populations of C. multigeniculata with consistently spiny fruits occur from Bonelli Peak, Gold Butte area of eastern Clark County, Nevada, south into the White Hills and Black Mountains of Mojave County, Arizona.

278 Vol. 61 NOTES ON THE OCCURRENCE OF BIRDS IN SOUTHERN NEVADA By GORDON W. GULLION, WARREN M. PULICH, and FRED G. EVENDEN Southern Nevada is an arid, desert area, lying on the north edge of the Great American Desert and just south of the Great Basin. Its general elevation ranges from about 2000 to 4000 feet above sea level and slowly rises to the north toward the 5000 to 6000 foot elevation characteristic of the valleys of the Great Basin. On the south and east sides of southern Nevada is the Colorado River system, with its two large reservoirs, lakes Mead and Mohave. This river system flows in an canyon whose pre- dam floor was at about 500 to 600 feet above sea level. Rising from the desert floor are numerous mountain ranges. Most of these ranges seldom exceed an elevation of about 8000 feet, although the peak of the Charleston Mountains (Spring Mountain Range) reaches 11,910 feet elevation. Vegetation types in southern Nevada range from the cottonwood-willow (Populus- S&r) association along the banks of the Colorado River to the white fir-bristle-cone pine (Abies concolor-Pinus uristutu) belt high on Mount Charleston. However, most of the notes from which this paper was developed were obtained in the mesquite (Prosopis j&flora) bosquesalong the major drainage systems, in the farming areas of the Virgin, Moapa, Pahranagat, and Pahrump valley areas, or from the xeric desert shrub areas on the large alluvial fans between the desert ranges and the valley bottoms. The vegetation on these fans varies from a rather hostile creosote-bush-bur-sage (Larrka trident&u- Frunseriu dumosu) environment at lower elevations (2500 to 3500 feet elevation) to a somewhat more favorable and highly diversified mixed shrub environment on the higher slopes (3000 to 4500 feet elevation).
