    ariel: a review of international english literature Vol. 46 No. 4 Pages 123–153 Copyright © 2015 The Johns Hopkins University Press and the University of Calgary “Nothing ever ends”: Archives of Written and Graphic Testimony in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao Lauren Jean Gantz Abstract: This article reads The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2007) as a critique of metatestimonial fiction and of the tendency to overstate literature’s power to heal cultural trau- mas. Metatestimonio bears figurative witness to historical atroci- ties and interrogates who is or is not allowed to speak of such events. Although Junot Díaz’s narrator Yunior gathers testimony from multiple survivors of the Trujillo regime, he mediates their experiences through his own authorial voice. The novel suggests that in refusing to allow testimony to speak for itself, Yunior (and by extension metatestimonio as a genre) replicates the discursive practices of the regime it denounces. Furthermore, by referencing specific comic book series, the artwork accompanying the 2007 Riverhead edition of the novel generates a counter-narrative cri- tiquing Yunior’s project. This graphic counter-narrative illustrates that ending the Trujillato’s hold on Dominicans is impossible— that certain traumas cannot be healed once and for all. Oscar Wao thus suggests that in claiming literature’s power to heal the past, we (like Yunior) privilege our own desire for resolution over the lived realities of survivors, for whom the working through of trauma is an ongoing and incomplete process. Wilcox All Rights Reserved January 2005 i ABSTRACT “Recombinant Media: The Mutation of Subjectivity in a Post-Print Culture” Johnnie A. Wilcox “Recombinant Media: The Mutation of Subjectivity in a Post-Print Culture” argues that subjectivity in American literary postmodernism is a transformation of the subject produced by print technology. This transformation comes about as a result of cultural shifts in media priority and the changes media themselves undergo as they incorporate techniques of other media. This study examines how the representation and production of subjectivity in several print objects is affected by the incorporation of techniques more characteristic of non-print media such as film, electronics, and music. The introduction traces the rise of non-print media such as film, electricity, and radio and argues that these media both augment and deform is such a way that print media then produces “recombinant media” which dramatically alter the subject normally produced by print. The first chapter considers how Gravity’s Rainbow hybridizes its own media body to create from its reader a retribalized, cybernetic subject. The second chapter traces the origins of this mutated, postmodern subject back to Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, arguing that the pressures of electricity and speech mutate Invisible Man into the prototype of the hacker.
