Shopping/Retail Centers/Restaurants Augusta and the surrounding area offer excellent shopping and dining opportunities. The Augusta Mall recently completed an extensive upgrade and remodel. This brought many top stores to Augusta, in addition to having many national shopping names and unique small businesses and antique malls. Dinning is equally as diverse. Augusta is proud of the many home grown restaurants in the area and the diverse flavor they bring. You can enjoy flavors from around the world. Some of the most coveted establishments include Frog Hollow, French Market Grill, Calvert’s, Bistro 491, and PI Grill. These are classic Augusta. However, Augusta also offers the national chains like Outback, Bonefish Grill, Olive Garden, Macaroni Grill, PF Changs, Chop House, and many more. There are more than 1,800 restaurants and more than 60 shopping centers in the Augusta MSA. Parks/Recreation The outdoors and recreation play a significant role in the quality of life in Augusta. The Augusta MSA offers a wide array of activities for the outdoor enthusiast or just for family fun. There are more than 150 parks in the Augusta MSA. However, Augusta offers much more than golf. Area activities include rowing, tennis, horse racing, marathons, cycling, mountain biking, disc golf, triathlons and much more. We are home to the minor league Augusta Greenjackets baseball team (owned by Cal Ripken, Jr.) and the ESi Ironman competition. The ESi Ironman is the largest Half Ironman event in the world with more than 3,200 participants in its second year (2010). In 2010, Augusta hosted the World Mountain Bike Association’s Annual Conference, and Augusta offers countless miles of state park, canal and river trails for biking and walking. Golf Courses Augusta is home to many excellent golf courses. The most famous of which is the Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters. There are 42 golf courses throughout the Augusta metro area. These courses include top course like Champions Retreat, The River Golf Club, Augusta Country Club, and Forest Hills Golf Club. Sports (College / Professional Augusta is home to many collegiate and professional sporting events. The minor league Augusta Greenjackets baseball team (owned by Cal Ripken, Jr.) and the Augusta Riverhawks, minor league hockey team, represent the professional team sports. However, Augusta is fortunate to offer the sporting enthusiast much more. The ESi Ironman competition. We also host the Augusta Southern Nationals, the premier drag boat race held on the Savannah River. The most notable include the Augusta Museum of History, the Morris Museum of Art, and the Augusta Canal and Interpretative Center. Augusta Museum of History Experience yesterday, today by visiting the region's home for history. Featured are a number of permanent exhibitions, including the award-winning Augusta's Story - a 12,000-year journey through local history, and a restored 1917 steam locomotive. Special exhibits include: The Godfather of Soul, James Brown, Celebrating a Grand Tradition, the Sport of Golf and six life-size statues of golf's greatest players and much, much more. Morris Museum of Art The first museum devoted to the art and artists of the American South, the Morris Museum holds a permanent collection of thousands of works of art, dating from the early nineteenth century to the present. It also presents special exhibitions and a rich variety of public programs, celebrating the culture of the South. Augusta Canal and Interpretative Center The Augusta Canal’s smooth water makes it an excellent place for a kayak or canoe adventures. Guided tours are also available in authentic Petersburg Boats. Developed by the Augusta Canal Authority, the interpretive center uses film, models and interactive exhibits to communicate the rich history of Augusta waterways and is located in the Historic Enterprise Mill. In addition to these museums, you can find other unique venues like, the Lucy Laney Museum, historic home tours (George Walton, Woodrow Wilson, and more), and more. The Greater Augusta Arts Council (GAAC) helps to coordinate and advance the arts, enriching the quality of life in Augusta and the surrounding area. GAAC helps promote the smallest of activities and provides programming for large activities like Arts in the Heart of Augusta. The GAAC also supports local artists and organizations ensuring the growth of the arts community in Augusta.
