By Tony Parker 2005 Baseball Canada Senior Championship- August 28-28th, 2005 Welcome to the web site of the 2005 Baseball Canada Senior Baseball Championship. Baseball history doesn’t always have to be boring statistical analysis. This is a game that began somewhere in the early 1800’s and was increasingly documented after the first major professional league was founded in the United States in 1876 and Canada has been very much a part of that game as you will find below. In addition to this section we have also created a series of baseball trivia and informationals that will allow you to learn more about the game in what we hope is an entertaining fashion. As few boring stats as possible , because few of us are bookkeepers or accountants. Foxy & Tip Marchildon Too Canadian Baseball is alive and well and has contributed greatly to the Major League game, even if Ferguson Jenkins remains the only Canadian born player enshrined at Cooperstown. You may think that Larry Walker is the lone Canadian to win a Major League batting crown and if so, you would be wrong, but if you weren’t alive in 1887 then you didn’t see a Canadian lad named Tip O’Neill become the first ever triple crown winner in professional baseball history or that legendary U.S. Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill was named after that same Canadian triple crown winner. And did you know that the first player to use a padded glove (Foxy Irwin), the first retired player to start broadcasting games on radio (Jack Graney) and the first no-hitter recorded after the top players returned from service in WW II (Dick Fowler) were also Canadians? Graney also played in the same starting outfield with baseball legend Shoeless Joe Jackson as well as Hall of Fame player Tris Speaker and batted behind Cy Young in his final big league season when Cy was wrapping up his career record of 51 1 wins (Unquestionably baseball’s most unbreakable Major League mark).

#218 BASEBALL'S APRIL FOOL Good day everyone ••• it'e a beautiful day in Pennsylvania. I have heard some of the smartest men in baseball, in discussions of pitchers, swear that l eft-handed pitchers are a breed apart. And Dizzy Dean, Lefty Gomez and others are testimony to t hat fact. Include in the category the Pennsylvanian who gave southpaws that reputation to begin with--Rube Waddell. Waddell, who had as much natural talent on the mound as any pitcher who ever lived! On any given day he was the equal of any pitcher of his time or any time. When Grantland Rice asked Connie MaclD to name the greatest pitcher of his 60 years, Mack said--"That's simple. It was Rube Waddell! He was as fast as Walter Johnson and had control and curves like Mathewson and Alexander. But for speed--and curves, both- Waddell was the beat". Waddell was big and he was loose on the mowid. He was known to pitch to great hitters like Larry Lajoie or Ty Cobb--put one inwai~~ high and t hey'd be swinging when the catcher pulled the ball out of the dirt. He made them miss by a foot. Waddell's trouble was that he had too many sidelines. He took days off for f ishing , or to chase fire engines, or to play marbles with t he kids, or act as a drum major in a town band or wrestle with alligators or tend bar. When he pitched, t hough, it was perfection. He was born in Bradford, Pennsylvania and pitched for f our major league clubs, and Punxsutawney, among others in the minor leagues.

  • Lou Gehrig Autograph, Portland, Oregon
Episode 10, 2006: Lou Gehrig Autograph, Portland, Oregon Gwen: Our first story takes us to Yankee Stadium for the inside story of baseball’s most famous speech. For 17 seasons, Lou Gehrig earned his rank as one of baseball’s greatest players. A phenomenal slugger and first baseman, he led the Yankees to seven World Series, knocking ball after ball out of the park. Then in 1939, the Iron Horse began to stumble. As much as he trained, he couldn’t escape a relentless slump. That summer, the mystery was finally solved. Gehrig was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or A.L.S., now known by many as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The incurable illness was paralyzing him, yet on July 4, 1939, without self-pity or fear, he courageously declared that life was well worth living. Gehrig: Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. [Cheers and applause] Gwen: More than 60 years later, a baseball fan from Portland, Oregon, may have a ticket that takes us behind the scenes that famous day. Ed Goldberg: I found the ticket in my mother’s high school yearbook. I looked at this ticket, and I said, “this can’t be what I’m seeing.” My mother never, ever told me about this. Gwen: I’m Gwen Wright, and I’m meeting Ed Goldberg to learn more about his mother’s baseball ticket. I’m Gwen, nice to meet you. Ed: Yeah, come on in. Gwen: Thanks. So how did you find it, Ed? Ed: This is my mother’s high school yearbook.
