Pictures normally need three visits – to produce a pencil cartoon, to ink in the detail, and to apply the washes. If the weather is kind and things go particularly well I can do a picture in two visits. It is not possible to work if it might rain as the slightest drop of water ruins the job, so work is limited to the summer months. I only work from life so please do not ask me to do a picture from photographs. The copyright belongs to the person commissioning the picture. I produce pictures on a sheet of A2. This results in an image about 15 or 16 inches by 20 inches, landscape or portrait as dictated by the property to be depicted. Mounts are about 3 inches wide but can be reduced when you order the frame. The charge is £175 and for this you get a picture mounted and wrapped. If the picture fails to please you may reject it.

From Nick Smith, Stow-on-the-Wold We are a local team - businessmen, firefighters, building contractors and their families, who are cycling 125 miles from Stow on the Wold to Bournemouth over the Bank Holiday weekend 4th -6th June, to raise as much money as we can for the Help for Heroes charity.

I decided that I wanted to do "my bit" following an invitation from my brother in law, Corporal Rick Muirhead to a charity auction for Help for Heroes at RAF Lyneham back in November 09, following a sponsored 40 mile moonlit walk by the RAF dog handlers in full combat kit. So sitting with family and friends at The Royal British Legion one Sunday in February we plotted our charity event with much enthusiasm. Wanting to raise as much awareness as possible we contacted local papers and radio, Please look out for 24 cyclists wearing Help for Heroes t- featuring in a live broadcast in Stow square on Tuesday 11th May on BBC Glos and an shirts donated by Travis Perkins, and the support article in the Glos Echo on 10th of May. 4 5 Morgan Cars and a Cotswold gardener took Silver at the RHS Malvern Show

Craig Hamilton-Smith Garden Design Ltd. and the Morgan Motor Company combined talents this year to create a Spring garden at the RHS Malvern Spring Show 2010, winning a coveted Silver Award.

The Morgan Garden mixes formal structure with meadow-like planting. It is full of life and movement, catching the wind and light and encouraging biodiversity - a place where native ecology can thrive. Craig Hamilton-Smith shows that with even limited space it is possible to ‘grow a meadow’, requiring relatively little maintenance and consuming significantly less resources than a lawn and border.

The iconic Morgan three wheeler car and the latest zero emission Morgan sports car, celebrate the company’s aim for zero emission sports cars.

Craig Hamilton-Smith trained as a garden lighting designer, switching to garden design in 2000 and studying Garden Design at Pershore Horticultural College. The Morgan Garden can be seen on Craig’s website www.CHSgardendesign.co.uk.

6 THE VILLAGER

There are some mornings when it is a pleasure to be ‘up and out’ of the house – the sky is bright and the countryside is looking gorgeous! This particular morning was a Friday early last month, and my excuse for getting out was to catch up with one of the Villager busses. I was going to Chipping Norton and back, along with the regular passengers and anyone else who happened along, and I was looking forward to it.

Val Davies was our driver. Val and her husband moved to Oddington a few years ago, and she hadn’t driven a bus before. But, with the offer of a one-day driving course, she volunteered and now does one morning every fortnight with the occasional extra half day to cover other drivers. Driving on a regular route means that Val has got to know her passengers, many of whom regularly travel into Chippy to shop on a Friday morning. They are picked up at the same time each week from a bus stop local to them , and are dropped off at the same stop just before lunchtime, with bags of shopping, plants, Christmas trees etc., according to the time of year.

Most of the passengers are regulars - one or two have used the Villager for the 28 years or so that the service has been running, and many travel free on their bus passes. Fares vary according to the journey, generally between £2.50 and £3 return, with running costs made up by vital funding received from Oxfordshire & County Councils - funding is guaranteed for as long as there is a need.

We left the Horse and Groom at 9.50am, going on to Oddington Village Hall where Joan joined the bus. Joan uses the Villager to go to Chipping Norton twice a week, and up to Stow and back on Thursdays to meet Ivy, a long term friend. They were planning a trip for later in the month - she would stay on the bus at Stow and Ivy would join her, with another Joan joining them at Bledington – and the three friends would have a day out in Witney – safely there and back on the Villager bus. What could be nicer – and what could be easier! I hope they had a lovely day.

“Waggons roll!” Val drove us on to Cornwell – nobody waiting today; left onto the main road to Stow then right to Chastelton. There are 25 volunteer drivers who cover the 13 routes, some doing more than half a day a fortnight – always driving the same routes and leaving each stop exactly at the time given in the timetable. If the bus fills up, which can happen on market days, the drivers will generally do a second or third run, cutting down on their turn-around time before the trip(s) home. The busses are kept clean by a local student (subject to exams) with the drivers making sure that nothing has been left on board, tidying up the seatbelts, and so on. Mary joined the bus at Chastleton, another regular – right past the burnt cottage (the firemen had helped Val manoeuvre the bus around their fire engines on that morning) and left onto the main road before turning right into Little Compton. 10.10am. Three joined the bus there (‘the back row brigade’) and we went on past The Greedy Goose before turning left into Salford where another four joined us, including a mum with her toddler (he had a lovely smile but was a bit bashful). Almost full now.

Into Chipping Norton now, with a stop in the centre (10.18) before swinging up behind the Co-op, where the bus parks up until 12 noon when it starts the return journey, arriving back at the Horse & Groom at 12.32pm. Val and I popped into Jaffe & Neale for a welcome coffee and a chat. Val loves driving the bus and commented on how appreciative the passengers are of the service. It’s not unusual for a driver to help a passenger with heavy bags of shopping, or a pushchair, and for regulars to be concerned if they haven’t seen someone for a while. ..we agreed, ‘that’s what community is all about’! 7 When Paul arrived at Bourton House Garden eleven years ago he brought with him years of experience at Hidcote House and Garden, part of the National Trust and internationally famous. Yet it is here at Bourton House, working instinctively rather than to a plan, that he ‘looks forward with glee’ to each new season.

Exceptionally this garden offers the visitor ‘a flamboyance and exoticism anchored by structure and form, both in its imaginative planting and its architecture’. So it is a photographer’s delight as well as a plantsman’s!

With each new season bringing fresh opportunities to develop the garden, it is summer and autumn that Paul looks forward to most. “We try to do something a bit different to what the public expect. In the past this has been large hanging baskets at the front of the Tithe Barn, planting big, striking plants in containers - and we got a name for displaying pots filled with colour.

“Jacky Rae is my assistant gardener and we work together on all parts of the garden, from clipping the yew hedges BBOOUURRTTOONN and topiary to the bedding, making decisions at the time as to what will work well. Because the garden has a good structure it is good in the spring, with the box planting and topiary, HHOOUUSSEE hedges, etc.

Bourton on the Hill is a stunning village - old Cotswold (Below) Assistant stone cottages climbing up the hill, pretty gardens and an Gardener, Jacky Rae impressive church. At the top of the hill there is an award- winning gastro-pub and stunning views to the east. At the bottom of the hill is another award winner, Bourton House and Garden – and the re-opening of the Garden this month is exciting news for both local garden enthusiasts and new visitors.

Bourton House Garden received the prestigious HHA/Christie’s Garden of the Year Award in 2006, under the creative and skilled husbandry of Head Gardener Paul Nicholls, actively supported by the previous owners, Mr & Mrs Paice. Monique Paice was frequently seen in the garden and her enthusiasm for creating and achieving that special ‘wow’ factor has been very much a keynote in developing the garden.

8 “We grow a lot of our own plants and use the Glasshouse to bring on tender plants and succulents. We try to do a different style of planting, mixed in with the regular planting and giving people a few surprises when they look around the garden. Each year we use different container plants for the pots and the hanging baskets - the only risk is getting out of scale.”

The brochure for the garden is wonderfully descriptive without overstatement….

‘Serene fountains, ponds and plunge pools give way to luxuriant terraces and deep herbaceous borders. A unique shade house; creatively planted pots; the carved herons guarding the Basket Pond from the Great Exhibition of 1851; ancient yew hedges mirroring the contours of contemporary trellis and metal work; an 18th century walk that provides an enticing link to the rolling Cotswold hills beyond. Bourton House was recently bought by Cheryl and Roelof And then there is box..in the parterre, the knot garden, and the Quintus, and for the new owners opening the garden to the topiary walk, delighting the eye in every season.’ public is a new experience.

Enthusiastically welcomed by many local gardeners, delighted to be able to visit the garden once more, we hope that they will derive pleasure from sharing this exceptional garden during the summer months.

Bourton House Garden is open from June 2nd until early September 10am to 5pm

• Ample free parking opposite the entrance • Teas/coffee and home-made cakes in the 16th century Tithe Barn • Gifts and cards • Toilets • Limited disabled access • Strictly no dogs.

‘Cleaved Air’ By Andrew Darke

9 10 3 th anniversary year

“Fosse Gallery….. one of the most influential and successful galleries outside the West End of London” Fosse Gallery remains in the home established for it by Gerard O’Farrell, Brian Sinfield and Don Steyn in 1980, in the Manor House on the Square, Stow on the Wold. The present owner, Sharon Wheaton, served her apprenticeship at the gallery and was mentored by Don Steyn – “ it’s a brilliant location”.

The excitement and passion developed by O’Farrell and Steyn established an enthusiastic clientele - continued by Sharon Wheaton with the same apparent lightness of touch and conviviality – making it easy for her artists to produce their best work; those considering buying an artwork for the first time are given as much help and support as those who are life-time collectors.

Fosse Gallery stands out – set apart by its exhibitions that mix new artists with the most well known and established ones, frequently introducing works that come straight from the artist’s studio and not seen before. FOSSE GALLERY’S ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION celebrates the gallery’s vibrant past, confirming the eclectic energy it displays today and casting a spotlight into the future.

During April, North Cotswold Police held a two day operation in the Moreton area. ‘Operation Sarco’ included speed checks, leaflet drops and high visibility patrols in Moreton itself and surrounding villages. As part of this, PC Caroline Paxford, PCSO Renee Morgan and Neighbourhood Watch Officer Andy Fogden held an event at the Moreton Area Centre for the town’s retail premises. YOUTH CONCERT. On May day (1st May!) the Club held their annual Youth Concert in St Edward’s Church, Stow. A large audience was treated to a superb evening of music played by Harry Smith (saxophone), Nathan Selladurai (guitar), Clare Haneghan (flute) and Amy Hayes (clarinet). The highlight was surely singing by Laurence Kilsby – a local boy who won the BBC Choirboy of the Year competition 2009. This concert was truly very special; the talent demonstrated by all the performers was truly remarkable. The Concert raised some £800 for the Rotary Foundation (Rotary’s own charity) and we thank all those who supported the event and to the sponsors Kendall & Davies (Solicitors) and BOHO (Ladies Fashions).

CHARITY GOLF DAY. Finally we look forward to the Club’s major fund raising event of each year, our annual Charity Golf Day to be held this year at Naunton Downs Golf Club on Monday 7th June. Sponsorship, together with supporters of the event, will allow substantial donations this year to three charities - Water Aid, Multiple Sclerosis and The Family Haven. We hope for good weather for the event. (Details and pictures next month!) Are you being seen? Talk to us about advertising your business. 07789 175 002
