Life: The Excitement of Biology 3(1) 15 On the Male and Female Genital Structures of Phyllobius (Metaphyllobius) glaucus (Scopoli, 1763) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Phyllobinii) from Turkey1 Mahmut Erbey2, Üzeyir Çağlar3, and Selami Candan3 Abstract: Several structures of the male genitalia (tegmen, parameres, manubrium, endophallus), and ninth abdominal sternite (spiculum gastrale) as well as the female genitalia (genital spicule and eight sternite, ovipositor, and spermatheca) of Phyllobius (Metaphyllobius) glaucus are described and illustrated for the first time as they are useful for separating P. glaucus from other congenerics. Key Words: Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Phyllobius glaucus, male and female genitalia Species of the polyphagous weevil genus Phyllobius generally live on cultivated shrubs and trees, particularly those in the families Urticaceae, Betulaceae, Salicaceae, and Rosaceae (Pesarini 1980). Their larvae often feed on the roots and, upon reaching adulthood, the beetles are seen on the shoots (Dieckmann 1980, Ross 1963). Sometimes, both larvae and adults cause major economic damage, particularly when grazing on young plants. Life: The Excitement of Biology 2(2) 94 Morphological and Molecular (18S rDNA) Phylogeny of Five Species of Weevils in the Tribe Phyllobiini (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Entiminae) from Turkey1 Mahmut Erbey2, Vahap Eldem3 and Yakup Bakır4 Abstract: Five species of weevils in the tribe Phyllobiini (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Entiminae) [Phyllobius glaucus (Scopoli, 1763); Phyllobius virideaeris (Laicharting, 1781); Parascythropus mirandus Desbrochers, 1875; Oedecnemidius pictus (Steven, 1829); Oedecnemidius saltuarius (Heyden, 1888)] were studied to generate analyses of their relationships. Those interspecific relationships were inferred from morphological characters as well as 18S rDNA sequencing data. Phylogenetic trees based on sequencing data were built with Neighbor Joining (NJ), Maximum Likelihood (ML), and Maximum Parsimony (MP) algorithms; morphology-based trees were created using UPGMA (Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean). The trees have a similar topology. Larvae and adults feed on roots, stems, leaves, and fruits. Consequently, they can have a detrimental effect on agricultural crops and forest trees causing significant economic losses (Pesarini, 1980). The Phyllobiini are widespread beetles distributed in the Palearctic biogeographic region. This group of curculionids has been investigated by Hoffmann (1950), Angelov (1976), Korotyaev and Egorov (1977), Dieckmann (1980), Pesarini (1980), Pişer (2001) as well as Yunakov and Korotyaev (2007). Currently, 120 species belonging to eight genera are recognized. Thirty-four species belonging to eight genera are known to occur in Anatolia (Pesarini, 1980; Lodos, et al., 2003). -

The Faculty of Biology, 220030, Minsk , Repablic of Belarus [email protected] ABSTRACT In the article, there is a list of 35 species of weevils (Curculionoidea) recorded on the introduced species of trees and shrubs in the city of Minsk. We examined 27 species of introduced plants from 13 families from different parts of the city. While examining the plants damages applied by weevils were noted. The weevils registered in the examined plants on trophic specialization are polyphages – 21 species and oligophages – 14 species. More than 1-2 species of weevils have not been observed simultaneously on one species of trees or shrubs. The first to be recorded on plants are polyphagous insects, which in case of mass reproduction can significantly reduce the decorative and aesthetic value of plants. Great damage was caused to plants which growing in parks and gardens with native vegetation. Plants growing in lawns or separately far away from native plants usually were not damaged. Infection by endosymbiotic “male-killing” bacteria in Coleoptera. Folia Biologica (Kraków) 66: 165-177. Wolbachia, Rickettsia, Spiroplasma and Cardinium are endosymbiotic and intracellular bacteria known to cause numerous disorders in host reproduction, reflected in their common name “male-killers”. In this study, 297 beetle species from various taxonomic groups were screened with the use of molecular markers for the presence of infection by any of these endosymbionts. Wolbachia was found to be the most common “male-killer” among beetle hosts as it infected approx. 27% of species. Rickettsia, Spiroplasma and Cardinium were much less prevalent as they infected: 8%, 3% and 2%, respectively, of the studied beetle species. This is the first report of Cardinium presence in beetle hosts. Incidences of co-infection of two bacteria taxa were very rare and only two weevil species were found to be infected by three different bacteria. These findings suggest that endosymbiotic bacteria inhabit their host at various levels of prevalence and that particular taxa usually infect different hosts, suggesting some competition among “male-killers”. -

A trunk window trap and an aerial flight-interception trap are presented, based on commonly used designs, but using much cheaper materials than standard. Construction diagrams are given, along with a description of trap installation, operation and beetle species found using these methods during a survey of Ayr Gorge Woodland, South-West Scotland. The traps were found to be robust and easy to operate. It is hoped that these trap designs will be of use to charitable organisations, students and amateurs who may previously have been unable to consider monitoring flying insects at large scales due to the prohibitive cost of equipment. -
BEETLES (Coleoptera) OCCURRING on HAZEL (Corylus L.) in DIFFERENT HABITAT CONDITIONS

The aim of the study was to recognise the species composition of beetles (Cole- optera) population occurring on hazel shrubs. Three-year studies were carried out on three ecosystems: on the cultivated hazelnut plantation, on an unprotected one and on shrubs of common hazel in the forest. The presence of 63 species was detected. The smallest number of species (22) and individuals (535) was noted in the protected plantation and the highest number in an unprotected one (46 species and 2787 individuals). In the forest the presence of 46 species and 1317 individuals was observed. The dominant species among beetles on hazel plantation in south-eastern Poland are from weevils’ family (Curculionidae). Curcu- lio nucum and leaf-eaters from Phyllobius sp. genus were most often collected. The rema- ining species that were observed are non-economic pests of hazelnut, but giving up suitable chemical pest control and horticultural treatment results in an increase of their number. At that situation the number of species characteristic of common hazel growing in the forest increased on large-fruited hazel too. The species composition, number, dominance and the topic and trophic groups of Coleoptera adults are given in this paper. This beetle from the family of weevils (Curculionidae) is common on production plantations in Poland and also in other European countries.
