    Issue 10, Summer 2018 Kent Archives is set for a busy summer. In this edition of our newsletter we introduce you to our joint project with Findmypast to digitise our parish register collection. The image in our header is from the first Cranbrook parish composite register [ref. P100/1/A/1], and is just one of the thousands of registers that will be digitised. We are also in the middle of transferring the remaining historic records of the Diocese of Canterbury from Canterbury Cathedral Archives to the Kent History and Library Centre to join its probate records, which have been held by Kent Archives since 1946. At the same time, archive cataloguing of one of Maidstone’s major papermaking collections is nearly complete; further World War I commemorative activities are underway; and work continues on the Catalogue Transfer Project and Manorial Documents Register Project for Kent. Document in Detail: Diocese of Canterbury Medieval Fragments [DCb/PRC/50/5] Mark Ballard, Archive Service Officer Among many other records of great value within the records of Canterbury Diocese are the ‘medieval fragments’ [DCb/PRC/49 and DCb/PRC/50], which in the post-Reformation period came to be used as covers, or ‘end-parchments’, for the probate registers. If we can judge by the dates of the act books and wills and inventories registers they covered, this recycling became a habit during the episcopate of Archbishop Matthew Parker (1559-1575). It is perhaps ironic that at precisely the time that Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, probably both closet Roman Catholics, were still being employed to write motets for the Chapel Royal, such disrespectful treatment was being accorded at Canterbury to their medieval predecessors.

Additional Suggestions Setting the pier blocks out accurately is essential and it will make the rest of the fixing process easier. First, check that the area is level enough to build the balustrade on. Next, mark the positions of the pier blocks and accurately measure the distances between piers to ensure that you have enough sections of stonework. • If you need to cut plinth and coping sections to fit into a bay, Place the pier blocks in positon using four wooden wedges underneath each pier. Use a level to ensure that then cut a small amount off several the piers are vertical and a string line to ensure that the piers are square on to each other and in line. The gap underneath the pier block should about 20mm. Mix up a mortar consisting of 5 parts soft sand to 1 part OP cement pieces. This way you will not use and pour some of it into the hole in the centre of the pier block. Using a baton or a gloved hand, push the mortar any more stones and you will get a out into the gap under the pier until some squeezes out around the outside of the pier.

This year’s report also provides a summary of the principal legislative changes following the Local Transport Act 2008, and the bearing they are having on the delivery of public transport. 1. Introduction (1) Public Transport continues to go from strength to strength in Kent. The County Council has been at the forefront of developing and implementing new initiatives, with new Quality Bus Partnerships (QBPs) signed in Ashford and Dover and similar partnerships planned for Sevenoaks, Shepway and Swale. Passenger numbers have continued to increase year on year. In 2005/06 there were 45.7 million journeys by bus; in 2006/07 48.6 million; in 2007/08 51.7 million; and in 2008/09 55.2 million. (2) During 2009/10 a number of key initiatives such as Kent County Council (KCC) Kickstart funding have delivered new vehicles and service uplifts for the Ashford A-Line operated by Stagecoach and for some of KCC’s supported bus routes. Further improvements are planned for 2010/11, and this report updates Members on progress. 2.
