How is such a thing possible? I'll do my best to explain. As a child, I had simply no interest in books. I hated reading, I was very bad at it, and besides, how could you take the time to read when there were games that shrieked for playing? Basketball, baseball, marbles—I could never get enough. I wasn't even good at them, but give me a football and an empty playground and I could invent last-second triumphs that would bring tears to your eyes. School was torture. Miss Roginski, who was my teacher for the third through fifth grades, would have meeting after meeting with my mother. "I don't feel Billy is perhaps extending himself quite as much as he might." Or, "When we test him, Billy does really exceptionally well, considering his class standing." Or, most often, "I don't know, Mrs. Goldman; what are we going to do about Billy?" What are we going to do about Billy? That was the phrase that haunted me those first ten years. I pretended not to care, but secretly I was petrified. Everyone and everything was passing me by. I had no real friends, no single person who shared an equal interest in all games. -
Philip Wilson Director
Philip Wilson Director Philip is a freelance director who spent four very successful years as the Artistic Director of Salisbury Playhouse (2007-2011). He trained on the Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme (Greenwich Theatre, 1995-96), and in 2015 was awarded the inaugural David Fraser/Andrea Wonfor bursary, to train as a multi- camera television director. Recent projects include the British Premiere of Ken Ludwig’s A Fox on the Fairway at Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch and Terence Rattigan’s After The Dance at Theatre By The Lake in Keswick. His adaptations of Philip Pullman’s Grimm Tales (first produced in an immersive staging at Shoreditch Town Hall and then the Oxo Bargehouse, in 2014 and 2015) were performed at Chichester this summer. Philip’s book, Dramatic Adventures in Rhetoric, co-written with Giles Taylor, is published by Oberon Books, and Grimm Tales is available from Nick Hern Books. The collection includes scripts, photographs, press cuttings and other items of theatre and television memorabilia. Edith Macarthur’s stage career has taken her to most major producing theatres in Scotland, and to many in England. The variety of her range is demonstrated in the collection, from her early days with respected amateur company, the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Players, to acclaim with prestigious companies such as the Royal Lyceum, Citizens’, Gateway, Bristol Old Vic, Pitlochry Festival, Traverse and Royal Shakespeare. Leading roles in the canon of major plays by Arthur Miller, James Bridie, Anton Chekhov, Eugene O’Neill, Noel Coward and their like, and various acclaimed productions of ‘The Thrie Estaites’, established her stage reputation. Alongside runs a vein of comedy and variety, from the ‘Five Past Eight Shows’ of the 1950s at the Citizens’, to regularly playing Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother in pantomime during the 1980s and 1990s. There is also a considerable body of television work, from early series such as ‘The Borderers’ and ‘Sutherland’s Law’, and the renowned 1970s adaptation of ‘Sunset Song’, to the long-running Scottish Television soap, ‘High Road’. A milestone was the 1993 film ‘The Long Roads’ by John McGrath. At about this time Miss Macarthur was coming to the attention of less mainstream theatre-producers in Scotland. -

Jan 14 #1 Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press Sherlockians (and Holmesians) gathered in New York to celebrate the Great Detective's 160th birthday during the long weekend from Jan. 15 to Jan. 19. The festivities began with the traditional ASH Wednesday dinner sponsored by The Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes at O'Casey's and continued with the Christopher Morley Walk led by Jim Cox and Dore Nash on Thursday morning, followed by the usual lunch at McSorley's. The Baker Street Irregulars' Distinguished Speaker at the Midtown Executive Club on Thursday evening was James O'Brien, author of THE SCIENTIFIC SHER- LOCK HOLMES: CRACKING THE CASE WITH SCIENCE & FORENSICS (2013); the title of his talk was "Reassessing Holmes the Scientist", and you will be able to read his paper in the next issue of The Baker Street Journal. The William Gillette Luncheon at Moran's was well attended, as always, and the Friends of Bogie's at Baker Street (Paul Singleton, Sarah Montague, and Andrew Joffe) entertained their audience with a tribute to an aged Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. The luncheon also was the occasion for Al Gregory's presentation of the annual Jan Whimsey Award (named in memory of his wife Jan Stauber) honoring the most whimsical piece in The Serpentine Muse last year; the winners (Susan Rice and Mickey Fromkin) received certificates and shared a check for the Canonical sum of $221.17. And Otto Penzler's tradi- tional open house at the Mysterious Bookshop provided the usual opportuni- ties to browse and buy. The Irregulars and their guests gathered for the BSI annual dinner at the Yale Club, where John Linsenmeyer proposed the preprandial first toast to Marilyn Nathan as The Woman. -

Ritter Goodspeed Education & Library Director You don’t have to be a baseball fan to know that the New York Yankees‐Boston Red Sox rivalry bitterly divides colleagues, neighbors, families, and Goodspeed patrons. In fact, according to The Harvard Sports Analysis Collective, East Haddam is located on the frontlines of this legendary baseball feud with slightly more than half the population favoring the Red Sox. What better way for Goodspeed to bring some levity to this divisive situation than with a hilarious musical comedy? Fortunately, Joe DiPietro’s side‐splitting adaptation of Damn Yankees contemporizes the book by replacing the defunct Washington Senators with the Boston Red Sox. We are pleased to have the opportunity to provide a neutral zone where members of the Yankees Universe and Red Sox Nation can forget their bitter differences for a few hours and share some laughs when the curtain goes up. Flashing back to the middle of the 20th century, Douglass Wallop’s 1954 novel The Year The Yankees Lost the Pennant was a best‐selling major league baseball twist on the Faust fable. Damn Yankees’ genesis was set in motion when William Morris agent Albert B. Taylor brought this property to the attention of legendary producer, director, writer, and actor George Abbott. Abbott and his team had just struck gold with the smash hit musical The Pajama Game, a show based on Richard Bissel’s novel 7½ Cents. Perhaps this monumental success gave Abbott the chutzpah to take the idea of a baseball musical seriously, despite the fact that all previous attempts at creating one were unsuccessful. -
