TE RŪNANGA O WHAINGAROA ISSUE 3 Pānui NEWSLETTER HAKIHEA 2020 TE RŪNANGA O WHANGAROA RECOGNISES HEALTH CONCERNS Targeted health services in rural and isolated areas recognised From left: Janine Whyte, Practice and Registered Nurse, Doris Pilcher Administrator Support, Lorna Smeath Practice lead, Registered Nurse, MNSc. Acknowledged for the leadership in adopting to the challenges of COVID and Alert Level-4, Te Rūnanga o Whaingaroa recently expanded its health portfolio with the establishment of Te Haukaha Mobile Nursing Outreach Service. The need for targeted services in rural and isolated areas has been recognised by Te Rūnanga o Whaingaroa, Broadway Health, and Northland District Health Board, who have all set out to provide an easy access, and ambulatory health service. As a result, Te Haukaha covers the Whangaroa rohe in a re-fashioned camper to enable specific, localised, and accessible services. A weekly schedule covers locations from Te Aukiwa Community Hub, Waitāruke, Tōtara North Community Hall, He Whare Āwhina Tākou, Whitiora Marae Te Tii, Te Tāpui Marae Matauri, Wainui Marae, Te Ngaere Bay and Kaeo. The free service is not dependant on where you are medically registered – delivering a range of assessments and health education to those who cannot get to a clinic at any one time. Allowing for kaumātua (kuia and kaumatua) checks in the comfort of their own homes, their papa kāinga and their marae, says Lorna Smeath (Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Manu, Ngāpuhi), Lead Nurse of Te Haukaha “Our kaumatua and kuia are the backbone of our communities. Their health and wellbeing affects their whānau, their tamariki, their mokopuna and their extended family. We need to keep them connected – in doing so, their spirits are lifted, their wellbeing is better, and being healthy allows to lessen the burden as much as possible,” she says. Clearly committed to our kaumātua, with a sense of whakahīhī, Te Haukaha recently organised a morning tea to sit with and share the learning and insights from Alert Level-4. With 20 local kaumātua from various marae, takiwā and the local care facility, Kauri Lodge, happily taking part - the day was a big hit. “We understand that small communities such as Whangaroa have deep whakapapa connections. For many it was their first community outing due to the consideration of continued health concerns,” says Janine Whyte, Te Haukaha Nurse. “We’ve been reminded that social wellbeing is an important part of the whare tapawha model – healthy bodies and healthy minds keep our people connecting,” she says. A special day for all, as Te Haukaha 喙- Mobile Nursing Outreach Service hosted a morning tea in Kāeo to share and connect with kaumatua and kuia from around the rohe .
